#10: “Serial Experiment Lain” (1998)
Virtual worlds, crazy hackers, the definition of God, dead students sending emails and one excessively introverted protagonist. Doesn’t this sound like a bundle of laughs? Isolated from the rest of her peers due to her own social awkwardness, our protagonist Lain finds herself caught between the real world and the computer generated reality of The Wired. We honestly would recommend this one if you happen to be feeling moody, then you’ll be able to bask in the moodiness of every character in this show and suddenly feel like you aren’t so alone.
#9: “Bleach” (2004-12)
Who remembers the glory days of this anime? How by the time it hit it’s stride it had become a shonen juggernaut? Ah yes, watching Ichigo take on the Captains and Lieutenants of the Soul Society was a marvel to watch, and the initial clashes with the likes of Aizen and the Espada were nothing to scoff at either. So why will it make you hate yourself? Well if you’re a Bleach fan you already know the answer to that since it nosedived in quality soon after. Deus Ex Aizen, the Final Getsuga Tensho, the entire Fullbringer Arc and with no sign of continuing the manga storyline, the ending of this show continues to break a lot of hearts.
#8: “Mars of Destruction” (2005)
They don’t call it the worst anime ever made for no reason. Poor production quality, laughably underdeveloped characters, and a narrative that thinks it’s doing something clever but truthfully is nothing more than an insult to the written word. You should only watch a show like this for one of three reasons. If you are drunk off your ass and need something to laugh at, you want a shot for shot example of how not to make an anime, or you feel like punishing yourself for thinking that anime was a medium all about creativity and fun. Mars of Destruction is sure to change your mind.
#7: “Himouto! Umaru-chan” (2015-)
A character’s unlikability can often be subjective, after all what one might consider unredeemable others might call character progression. In fact if you look at – ah screw it, this has to be one of if not the most annoying anime character of all time! While at school Umaru seems like your ideal student with no flaws to her name, as soon as she gets home she becomes what can only be described as a monster in an orange hoodie. She’s overbearing, lazy, forces her brother to do everything for her, and is beyond annoying to the point where you will find yourself headbutting your screen out of a insatiable desire to strangle her.
#6: “Kimi Ni Todoke” (2009-11)
We have a bone to pick with this anime, after all it has been the cause of so much misery in the lives of fans. It all comes down to the core pairing of Sawako and Kazehaya. If you look past the excellent chemistry they share, if you brush over the brewing romance that will make you believe in true love again, if you just ignore the top tier character development, you will find one thing. Their relationship is freaking PERFECT. I mean look at them! Look at them! There are no words for this level of cuteness. And that’s the problem, because none of us will have anything close to what they have. Ever.
#5: “Dragon Ball GT” (1996-97)
Eager to see what a complete bastardisation of a beloved series looks like? Behold. The warning signs were pretty clear from the moment that Goku was transformed back into a kid, but in truth that’s only the start of its issues. Lacklustre animation, uninteresting characters, the rest of the DB cast get glossed over, and the fight scenes hardly pack a punch. What about Super Saiyan 4, we hear defenders cry out. Well Super Saiyan 4 doesn’t make up for the minutes of life we wasted watching the Para Brothers!
#4: “Neon Genesis Evangelion” (1995-96)
It’s a show about kids in mecha taking out giant threats of unknown origin! How can we not love it? Well, sure you can enjoy the battles against the Angels, but it means you’ll also have to deal with our main character going through a series of mental breakdowns due to abandonment issues by his jerk of a Dad whose too busy trying to clone his dead wife. Oh, and the whole thing ends in Shinji’s head as he tries to deal with all his trauma he’s suffered. What? That’s too much of a downer for you? You’re going to watch the End of Evangelion instead? Yeah…good luck with that.
#3: “Case Closed” (1996-)
Everyone loves a good mystery, especially when the detective has his own unique and endearing quirks that make the whole thing a pleasure to watch. Oh man, I hope it has a bunch of episodes and seasons so the experience can last for as a long as – what do you mean this thing has nearly nine hundred episodes and it’s still going?! There’s over twenty movies as well?! How the hell do you expect us to catch up to that?! Seriously, the greatest mystery on this show is if there’s ever actually going to be an ending!
#2: “Pokemon” (1997-)
We could go on and on about how it has nearly a thousand episodes under its belt and its high time this show called it quits, but do know what the really depressing thing is? Ash is still a ten year old kid! Good god it’s been almost twenty years! He never ages, but we do! We’re still waiting for him to work his way to puberty while we draw closer to death with every passing day. Seriously, the Pokemon anime is now nothing more than a harsh reminder about your own mortality, and while you’re having to deal with existential crisis, Ash is off laughing at our anguish!
#1: “The Ideon: Be Invoked” (1982)
Everybody dies~ everybody dies~ come on kids and sing along ~everybody dies! In the second film follow up to this classic show, we see the whole cast suffer a much darker fate than had been seen at the end of the original Space Runaway Ideon. We see every character we both loved and hated die in a graphic parade of murder, death and destruction. Seriously, how do they plan on topping this? Blowing up the surrounding planets to – oh wait they did. Oh sure their spirits meet up at the end, but that doesn’t take away the fact we just witnessed an intergalactic extinction event. Thanks a bunch.
