Top 10 Anime So Good No One Can Hate Them

Garrett Alden
Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the anime so beloved that hardly anyone hates them.
#10: “Yu Yu Hakusho” (1992-94)
There are plenty of classic ‘90s Shonen series with devoted fans. However, “Yu Yu Hakusho” arguably has the fewest detractors. The show follows spirit detective Yusuke and his friends as they battle various supernatural threats. The characters are compelling, and the story is well told - and lacking the filler that plagues some of its peers. The action and animation hold up surprisingly well. Even the dub is praised, and we all know how rare that is! “Yu Yu Hakusho” also proved incredibly influential on the genre, with dozens of its successors taking inspiration from it. It might be comparatively underrated, but few who’ve seen it would speak against “Yu Yu Hakusho.”
#9: “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” (2023-)
Perhaps the only complaint you’ll see about “Frieren” is its slower pace. And while accurate, nobody hates the show because of it. The journeys of the eponymous elf mage have won the hearts of millions. The animation is gorgeous and renders slice-of-life and action scenes with equal beauty. The soundtrack is stirring and moving too. The pace of the show is measured, yet in its quiet moments, “Frieren” delivers incredible insight into its characters, themes, and world. “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” continues to go beyond everyone’s expectations, and we absolutely love it.
#8: “Gintama” (2006-18)
Comedy can be subjective, but while “Gintama” may not make everyone laugh, it’s still a riot! A bizarre mashup of sci-fi, samurai, and 4th wall breaking comedy, “Gintama” is truly weird and utterly unique. Despite its emphasis on comedy, the series does contain some serious elements, particularly as time goes on, with some incredibly intense battles. While its heavy reliance on in-jokes and Japanese humor has left it as more of a cult hit outside of Japan, “Gintama” is still as well liked as it is under watched. People even like the filler!
#7: “Natsume's Book of Friends” (2008-)
A teenage boy with the ability to see spirits and yokai is a typical anime set-up, but it’s in its execution that “Natsume’s Book of Friends” differs from the rest. The titular Natsume Takashi doesn’t fight spirits, but instead seeks to understand and empathize with them. Comfort, wholesomeness, and emotional backstories are the order of the day with this anime. The sheer amount of depth packed into each episode is impressive. While it may not have much international recognition, everyone who knows “Natsume’s Book of Friends” knows it’s a real “page turner.”
#6: “Dandadan” (2024-)
Love is always a hurricane, and “Dandadan” is one wild storm! Bursting onto the scene with a ton of energy and a totally unique feel, “Dandadan” was an instant favorite for many. Momo and Okarun’s encounters with aliens and ghosts lead to comedy, romance, and action in equal measure. Its wide variety of genres gives it a broad appeal to begin with, but the presentation is what won so many hearts. The series expertly transitions from chaotic action to hysterical comedy to adorable romantic moments, sometimes all in the same scene. “Dandadan” doesn’t compromise by emphasizing one tone instead of another, but instead embraces them all with equal enthusiasm. It’s no wonder everyone adores it.
#5: “Mob Psycho 100” (2016-22)
Psychic powers can’t solve every problem. Mob is a young esper whose struggles with his emotions, girls, and making friends are often as difficult as his battles against ghosts and other psychics. “Mob Psycho 100” is packed with incredible action scenes, with beautifully fluid animation. Meanwhile, the character dynamics and personal growth throughout the show are well done and truly heartwarming. The series will make you laugh, cry, and maybe become a better person. “Mob Psycho 100” is as difficult to hate as the Body Improvement Club. It’s impossible to hate, is what we’re saying. Fight on!
#4: “Gurren Lagann” (2007)
Your blood would need to run cold indeed not to enjoy this hotblooded mecha anime. Simon, Kamina, and the rest of Team Dai-Gurren’s giant mech battles take them from deep underground to the stars above. The extensive cast each get their own chance to develop, since much like the drills that feature throughout, they all keep moving forward. For as audacious and outlandish as “Gurren Lagann” is, its themes include touching, down-to-earth ideas, like believing in yourself. You’d have to be an Anti-Spiral to hate “Gurren Lagann,” because its lovability pierces the heavens themselves!
#3: “Hunter x Hunter” (2011-14)
It’s amazing that the creator of “Yu Yu Hakusho” managed to make two series that are universally acclaimed! “Hunter x Hunter” is somehow both a wholesome Shonen adventure series, and a show that deconstructs the genre’s tropes in dark and interesting ways. Aspiring Hunter Gon’s search for his father leads to several distinct and varied smaller stories along the way, including everything from a mafia conflict to a video game isekai. “Hunter x Hunter” has earned millions of fans thanks to its intricate storytelling, great characters, and brilliantly realized power system, among many other things. In fact, you could argue that the only thing people hate about it is that it may never get a complete adaptation.
#2: “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” (2009-10)
Almost nobody badmouths “FMA:B!” It’s just too good! An epic adventure series, “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” follows Ed and Al Elric on their quest to regain their bodies after a disastrous and grim mistake. Their simple quest soon builds into a story on a massive scale, yet which never loses its heart. The show’s themes are deep and touch on everything from war to the nature of the human soul. Its action is spectacular. It’s funny, yet tragic. This anime does a little bit of everything, and it does everything practically perfectly!
#1: “Cowboy Bebop” (1998-99)
This sci-fi series is simply too cool to dislike. The adventures (and misadventures) of the Bebop crew have been so popular for decades for many reasons. It’s a frequent gateway anime for many. The animation holds up incredibly well. The series draws from a lot of genres, which makes it appeal to fans of many kinds of stories. Speaking of genres, the music is eclectic, yet absolutely flawless throughout. And the dub is easily front and center in the anime dub hall of fame. “Cowboy Bebop” is an anime that just about everyone considers a jam.
Is there an anime that gets no hate that you hate we forgot? We’d love it if zero people didn’t share their picks in the comments!
