Top 10 Anticipated Anime Movies

#10: “The Rose Of Versailles” (2025)
There’s never been a better time to start reading up on the French Revolution. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the manga, “The Rose of Versailles” is coming back on the largest screen possible. It’s well overdue. Ever since the original run ended all the way back in 1980, the influential drama hasn’t been given the treatment it oh-so desperately deserves. Thankfully, Studio Mappa, known for other behemoth-sized hits like “Jujutsu Kaisen,” “Attack on Titan,” and “Chainsaw Man,” will be rectifying that in 2025. With that kind of resume, this fresh adaptation of “The Rose of Versailles” is sure to please newcomers and longtime fans alike.
#9: “The Eminence in Shadow: Lost Echoes”
After falling into a fantasy realm, the newly-minted Cid Kagenou made himself the very center of the pop-culture conversation. Both in his world and ours. Now that he’s flexed his stuff on the TV screen, he’s setting his sights on the next big hurdle: the multiplex. We wouldn’t be too worried, though. “The Eminence in Shadow” is building off two fantastic seasons of action, intrigue, and atomic displays of strength. There’s no reason to believe Cid’s theatrical expedition will be any different. Even if he’s in another realm, wherever Cid goes, people are bound to follow.
#8: “FUUTO PI: Portrait of Kamen Rider Skull” (2024)
A “Kamen Rider” anime film sells itself. Especially when it’s coming from an already-established show. “Fuuto Pi” is a superhero anime based on the manga of the same name, itself a continuation of the live-action “Kamen Rider W” series. That may sound like a complicated barrier of entry, but don’t worry. “Portrait of Kamen Rider Skull” is billed as a flashback story chronicling the last case of Detective Sokichi, meaning it’s uniquely positioned to appeal to all audiences. And, really, who’s going to pass up seeing some animated Kamen Rider action on the big screen?
#7: “The Irregular at Magic High School: Yotsuba Succession Arc”
There’s nothing “irregular” about it; this show is worth the hype. And, what better way to reward that behavior than with a field trip to movie theaters? The film is set to pick up right where the third season left off, with a power vacuum at the head of the Yotsuba clan, and everyone vying for control. In case there was any doubt, this is not something you can skip. Not that anyone’s planning on it, anyway. Catching up with Miyuki and Tatsuya is worth the price of admission alone. You better buy your tickets now before it’s too late.
#6: “Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom” (2024)
Just when you thought Ainz Ooal Gown couldn’t get any cooler, he brings his armies to an even bigger screen. And with a canon story arc, to boot! Since it’s four seasons deep, you’d think a necessary plotline might be an issue. But, then again, if you aren’t already caught up, what have you been doing? “Overlord” has been the peak of violent, fantasy wish-fulfillment for years now. These days, the only thing better than watching Ainz Ooal Gown conquer his enemies is seeing him do it on a massive movie screen. Luckily, “Holy Kingdom” promises to do just that, and then some.
#5: “Haikyu!! Final” Part 2
Karasuno’s story is on set point, and to add to the pressure, they’re on their biggest stage yet. No, we don’t just mean Nationals. To give the series the sendoff it deserves, “Haikyu!!” is bringing the drama-filled conclusion to theaters across two, feature-length films. The first of them, 2024’s “The Dumpster Battle,” ended up scoring a service ace at the box office, nabbing several yearly records in the process. So, while there’s no official word on a timetable for the final installment, we’d wager we’ll be seeing Hinata, Kageyama, and the others sooner rather than later.
#4: “My Hero Academia: You're Next” (2024)
You’d think after three films and over and hundred episodes of anime, a series would begin to run out of ideas. Not “My Hero,” though. For Deku and friends’ fourth trip to the movies, they’re bringing out their most ambitious pitch yet: Evil All Might! Sorry, we mean “Dark Might.” Yes, it’s a bit wacky, but that’s part of the charm. “My Hero Academia” has earned the benefit of the doubt, anyways. The series’ films have always delivered the hype action and moving emotional beats befitting a big screen. Assuming “You’re Next” maintains that level of quality, “My Hero” films will be batting four for four.
#3: “Puella Magi Madoka Magica - Walpurgisnacht Rising” (2024)
Good things come to “Puella” fans who wait. Over ten years after the franchise’s last theatrical endeavor, it’s returning for more bombastic, magical goodness. Wordy title aside, “Walpurgisnacht Rising” sells itself on its brand alone. Fans have been starved for so long, it could be two hours of Madoka staring at a wall, and it would still sell out theaters. The fact that “Rising” is actually a direct sequel to 2013’s “Rebellion” brings the excitement to a whole new level. There’s no way of knowing exactly where this movie will take Madoka and the others. But, rest assured, there’s going to be a lot of people watching.
#2: “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc”
The must-see show of 2022 just became the must-see moviegoing experience. Like all great industry-shakers before it, “Chainsaw Man” was so successful as a weekly anime, it’s taking its next storyline all the way to the big screen. This is no mere side adventure, though. As its name implies, it will tell the highly-anticipated Reze arc, which introduces the fan-favorite heroine with all the bloodshed, hormones, and zaniness “Chainsaw Man” does best. If we had to guess, it’ll look even better in a movie theater. Now, can we please get a release date already?
#1: “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” Infinity Castle Trilogy
Muzan’s made his move, the Slayer Corp is trapped in his domain, and “Demon Slayer’s” about to do what “Demon Slayer” does best. Completely dominate. Taking full advantage of the series’ ridiculous popularity, the climactic final battle is being turned into not just one, not just two, but three full movies. There’s no words for how high expectations are. Last time “Demon Slayer” quested to theaters, it delivered the highest-grossing Japanese movie of all time. Period. If the “Infinity Castle” trilogy can match even half of “Mugen Train’s” absurd success - and let’s be real, how could it not? - then we’re in for an unprecedented time at the multiplex.
