It’s a good year for cinema-goers who like seeing familiar faces. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Anticipated Sequels of 2020. For this list, we’ll be looking at the most buzzworthy, long-awaited and exciting sequels set to hit theaters or streaming services in 2020. Note that release dates are subject to change!

#10: “The Princess Switch: Switched Again” Release Date: TBA 2020

Top 10 Most Anticipated Sequels Of 2020

Were you among the countless Netflix subscribers who fell head over heels in love with this Netflix original rom-com? For the uninitiated, “The Princess Switch” tells the story of two identical strangers from very different worlds who decide to walk a few miles in each other’s shoes. The result is inevitably complicated, often silly and endlessly charming. But if bumping into someone who’s your mirror image can happen once, who’s two say it can’t happen? Stacy and Margaret got their respective happily ever afters in the first film, but when yet another lookalike steps into the picture - a hard-partying young woman named Fiona- they find themselves with a whole new set of problems. Who’s ready for TRIPLE Vanessa Hudgens?

#9: “Top Gun: Maverick” (2020) Release Date: June 26th, 2020

Dear Mr. Cruise, what’s your beauty regimen? Does it involve dark magic of some sort? This sequel arrives 34 years after the original film and yet its star still looks amazing despite the fact that he’s in his late 50s. When this sequel was first announced, the naysayers were many. What sort of follow-up story to “Top Gun” actually warrants telling? But despite his eternal youth, Cruise looks to be playing Pete "Maverick" Mitchell as a man who’s well aware of his age, legacy and place in this changing world. With Miles Teller onboard as the son of his late best friend, Top Gun: “Maverick” is shaping up to be not just charming, thrilling eye candy, but also a surprisingly self-aware and thoughtful film.

#8: “Bill & Ted Face the Music” (2020) Release Date: August 21st, 2020

Also in:

Top 10 Best Bill and Ted Movie Moments

2019 was, for many, the year of Keanu Reeves. The pop culture omnipresence of this endlessly likable star was so potent that it gave birth to the term “Keanussance”. And thankfully, Reeves seemingly shows no signs of slowing down in 2020. This year, the humblest man in Hollywood is going back to his roots (much to the delight of fans) and revisiting one of his most iconic roles - Ted ‘’Theodore’’ Logan. This 2020 film sees him reuniting with co-star Alex Winter, aka Bill S. Preston, Esq., for another excellent (or potentially bogus) adventure. The film catches up with Bill and Ted living humdrum middle-aged lives -that is until they’re tasked with writing a song that will literally save the universe. Sounds like fun!

#7: “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (2020) Release Date: July 3rd, 2020

Also in:

Steve Carell will always be Michael Scott of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. But if there’s a role that comes in close second, it’s without a doubt Gru, the villain-turned-hero of the “Despicable Me” franchise. The sequels may be something of an exercise in diminishing returns, but the “Minions” spin-off remains the worst reviewed. It was good for a laugh and the titular creatures were endearing as ever, but without Gru, they felt incomplete. For the sequel, the filmmakers seem poised to recreate the winning formula by not only giving Minions 2 the Gru it needs, but also taking Gru back to his villainous roots. This inbetweenquel might just have found the secret to renewed success!

#6: “Legally Blonde 3” (2020) Release Date: May 8th, 2020

Top 10 Legally Blonde Stars: Where Are They Now?

There’s nothing quite like a subpar sequel to send a promising franchise headfirst into the straight-to-dvd bin. Sadly, that’s exactly what “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde” accomplished, laying a path for the tangentially connected spin-off film, “Legally Blondes”. Thankfully, Reese Witherspoon’s unstoppable Elle Woods is getting a second lease on life in the form of a third theatrical film. To date, the plot details remain very hush-hush, but given Witherspoon’s track record as both an actor and producer, we have every reason to believe that this threequel will more than make up for lost time. The best part? Witherspoon has brought back original “Legally Blonde” screenwriters Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, ensuring this sequel honors the spirit of the first film.

#5: “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run” (2020) Release Date: May 22nd, 2020

Also in:

Every Single Book to Movie Adaptation in 2020

Where hasn’t this enthusiastic sponge ventured since first changing the world of cartoons when his show debuted in 1999? The best fry cook in all of Bikini Bottom has starred in comic books, theme park rides, video games and even Broadway! “Sponge on the Run” is Spongebob’s third theatrical film following 2004’s “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie” and 2015’s “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water”. This time around, SpongeBob and his trusty best friend Patrick must rescue the former’s pet snail, Gary, from Poseidon. The mission will carry them to the Lost City of Atlantic City, revealing SpongeBob and Gary’s shared history along the way. Sounds like the sort of plot that only SpongeBob can carry, but hey, a score by Hans Zimmer certainly doesn’t hurt.

#4: “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You'” (2020) Release Date: February 12th, 2020

Also in:

Top 10 Anticipated Action Movies of 2020

Can Netflix save the rom-com genre? Only time will tell, but they’re certainly making a valiant effort. And if this sequel is even half as enjoyable as 2018’s “To All the Boys I've Loved Before”, well… all signs point to success! The first film in the series boasts a staggering 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and though it doesn’t reinvent the teen-romance formula, it certainly breathes new life into it. Adolescent love stories rarely get a lasting happily ever after, but that’s good news to fans, because now we get a sequel! “Ps. I Still Love You” finds Lara Jean and Peter fully coupled up, but LJ’s year of romantic firsts is complicated when another love-letter recipient shows up, creating a whole new conflict.

#3: “The Croods 2” (2020) Release Date: December 23rd, 2020

Also in:

Top 10 Anticipated Animated Movies of 2020

We had planned on talking about “Sing 2” on this list, but it got pushed back to 2021 to make room for this sequel in Universal Pictures’ release schedule. And you know what? That’s a fair trade off. In case you missed it, 2013’s “The Croods” follows a family of prehistoric cave people who find their social order complicated when an outsider starts introducing modern ideas - like shoes! Well, it seems that, after the initial cancellation of the sequel in 2016, these cave-dwellers have managed to stave off extinction. Voice actors Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone are all returning in the roles of Grug, Guy and Eep respectively, and together they’ll be navigating a “strange new world”.

#2: “A Quiet: Place: Part II” (2020) Release Date: May 20th, 2020

Also in:

Top 10 Anticipated Movies of the Next 10 Years

“A Quiet Place” was one of the most surprising and welcome hits of 2018. Scary, unique and emotionally engaging, it was exactly the sort of modern horror film that cinemagoers are looking for. That being said, while the Abbott family earned themselves a hard fought victory against the sound-sensitive creatures that have destroyed civilization as they knew it, life has arguably only gotten more challenging. This highly-anticipated sequel follows them as they venture out into the world, which is made all the more dangerous given that they’re traveling with a baby - plus they now have to contend with other survivors. From the looks of the trailer, writer-director John Krasinski has crafted another extremely tense cinematic ride for us. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions “Coming 2 America” (2020) Release Date: December 18th, 2020 “Fast & Furious 9” (2020) Release Date: May 22nd, 2020 “Trolls World Tour” (2020) Release Date: April 17th, 2020 “After We Collided” (2020) Release Date: TBA 2020

#1: “Wonder Woman 1984” (2020) Release Date: June 5th, 2020

Also in:

Top 10 Movies That Should've Been Released in 2020 (So Far)

Three years isn’t that long of a wait between films, but when you’re talking about a sequel to a movie as engaging, groundbreaking and empowering as 2017’s “Wonder Woman”, it feels like a lifetime! “Wonder Woman” took the box office by storm to the tune of over $800 million, wowing critics and audiences alike. With “Wonder Woman 1984”, the action has jumped forward 66 years, and returning director Patty Jenkins has found an updated, vibrant visual style to match. The plot follows Diana Prince as she tangles with two infamous villains from the rogues gallery of her comic book counterpart, Cheetah and Maxwell Lord. Plus, Chris Pine makes a mysterious return as Steve Trevor. June 5th can’t get here quick enough!
