Top 10 Best Anime for Couples to Watch Together
#10: “Toradora!” (2008-09)
High school romps are dime a dozen, so why not just go straight for the best? Focusing on the antics of the short, ill-tempered Taiga and misunderstood nice guy Ryuji, watching these two slowly drift towards one another romantically is a delight. After all, they certainly don’t make it easy for one another, what with peer pressure, miscommunication and love triangles threatening to veer everything off course. The two leads more than carry the whole thing, and will no doubt have you rooting for their coupling well before that all important first kiss.
#9: “Aggretsuko” (2018-)
Adorable red pandas and depressingly realistic burnout together at last. If you or your paramour have ever had a terrible day at the office or have felt like life is basically a meaningless series of obstacles, then you’re going to relate to Retsuko hardcore. Sweet yet disillusioned, all she wants is to find love, rock out to heavy metal and not live each day like a corporate doormat. While it can get painfully real at times, there’s plenty of anthropomorphic humour to be found here, as well as a few solid life lessons on how there’s always a better tomorrow, you just have to go for it.
#8: “Violet Evergarden” (2018)
Up for a good cry? Well, you’d better be, because Violet’s journey is one that touches on a lot of nerves that will leave in need of a hug. Formally a weapon of war, numbed to all emotion save for the memories of the man who stated his love for her, Violet slowly starts to find herself through her new job as an Auto Memory Doll; traversing the world, meeting all manner of people, and writing down the words in their hearts onto paper. It’s an unusual occupation, but the emotional resonance is palpable!
#7: “The Disastrous Life of Saiki K” (2016-)
If you’re in the mood for something on the lighter side, then watching a despondent psychic strive for a normal life while dealing with an increasingly crazy cast of support characters should do the trick. Only here can you have a near omnipotent esper, and yet have all your attention drawn to the lovable circle of friends he’s forced to contend with day in and day out, and by that we mean everything Kaido does is pure, adorkable gold. This is definitely one to recommend your partner if they want to know just how funny anime can be.
#6: “Erased” (2016)
A riveting mystery that really knows how to heel-drop you in the feels. If there’s one thing that this tightly-crafted time-travel thriller is guaranteed to do to couples – it’s compel them to be the best parents possible. Or reach into the screen and immediately adopt Kayo. One of the two. After discovering he can body swap himself back into his child-self, Satoru endeavours to rescue his classmates from an unknown killer. Everyone loves a well-written whodunit, just be prepared that this one really knows how to get a rise out of you!
#5: “Hi Score Girl” (2018-19)
Gamers in love? Now that’s relatable. Whether you enjoy seeing an authentic bond form between two young romantics, or you’re a huge fan of classic arcade titles, this is a match made in heaven. Navigating a love triangle inbetween learning how to pull off Zangief’s ultimate move in Street Fighter might sound like a disjointed mess, but there’s just so much earnest affection between the characters as well as the games the show is paying homage to. Remember, true love is just as powerful as a sonic boom.
#4: “Recovery of an MMO Junkie” (2017)
Something of a mirror image of our last entry, this one isn’t so much a celebration of online games, as it is an acknowledgement of how gaming can be used as a crutch…especially when you’re going through a mid-life crisis. Seeing two online friends struggle to pass the final boss that is adulting is both touching and sure to hit home for many couples, with their genuine chemistry both in the real world and through their avatars forming the crux of what turned out to be an underrated rom-com anime gem.
#3: “Astra Lost in Space” (2019)
If your ideal sci-fi is more character-based and less about lightsabers, then you’re going to have a ball with this one! After a dimensional phenomenon launches them to the other side of the galaxy, a bunch of youths from all walks of life find their weekend at space camp has now become a mission of survival. With the lone spaceship Astra serving as their last hope, the unconventional crew must chart a course for home while making several, potentially-life-ending pit-stops to other planets on the way. The fact it has such a great overarching plot makes it an easy pick!
#2: “Beastars” (2019-)
Did your partner like Zootopia? Did they wish it went to darker and more disturbing places? Then they’re going to love this. Or perhaps be left horrifically scarred while also pining for Legoshi to get his happy ending. In a world of anthropomorphic animals, the social stigmas revolving around cannibals’ appetites pave the way for all manner of fascinating world-building. The greatest draw is without a doubt the sweet and simple Legoshi and his desire to earn the affections of bunny Haru. Even though he’s left unsure if he’s being ruled by love or something more primal.
#1: “Kaguya-sama: Love is War” (2019-)
What better series for couples to indulge in than one that features anime’s modern power couple? Or at least they would be if they would just admit they like each other. Too prideful to admit the fact they’re hopelessly infatuated with another, genius students Kaguya and Miyuki spend their school days making us laugh our heads off due to their repeatedly failed attempts to get the other to confess first. The scenarios can range from outrageous to shockingly realistic, but either way you’ll be caught up in their lovey dovey schemes before you know it. And more than likely arguing who’s who in your own relationship.
