“The Legend of Vox Machina" has gotten off to a terrific start, partially due to these incredible action scenes. For this list, we’ll be looking at the most thrilling, action-packed moments in the first season of Amazon’s D&D-inspired show. If you haven’t watched the full season, beware of spoilers ahead. Our countdown includes Scanlan's Distraction, the Dragon Fight - Round 2, the fight against the silver-tongued Professor Anders, and more! Which action sequence had you on the edge of your seat? Head to the comments and let us know.

#10: First Encounter With the Briarwoods

“The Feast of Realms”

Delilah and Sylus Briarwood are the main villains of the season, and they do not mess around. During a banquet at Sovereign Uriel’s palace, Percy tells his allies of their wickedness, leading Vax to sneak off and search their room. Sadly, the rogue is caught and a fight ensues. Vox Machina soon realizes how severely outmatched they are compared to Delilah’s magic and Sylus’ vampiric speed and strength. Delilah’s ability to easily deflect and dodge attacks and Sylus’ cursed sword, which slices and dices poor Grog, show how powerful the duo is. This fight, although short, also shows that the team has a lot of growing to do if they hope to conquer their foes.

#9: Dark Forces

“Shadows at the Gates”

The show’s fourth episode sees Vox Machina on lockdown after seemingly spoiling Uriel’s feast. But Delilah isn’t one to forgive and forget, especially once she realizes the group has stolen her book. She sends a horde of ghosts after the confined team, which leads to some pretty brutal deaths of the men guarding them. The ghosts’ design is undeniably creepy and they seem to have the upper hand as they burst into the keep, dealing significant necrotic damage to most team members. It’s a thrilling, chilling sequence that sees the team narrowly avoid defeat. If not for Keyleth’s light-summoning spell to weaken their intruders, they may have succumbed.

#8: Undead Nightmares

“Fate’s Journey”

With the season’s main arc fully underway, Vox Machina heads to Whitestone to put an end to the Briarwoods’ evil schemes. But they soon learn the road is a dangerous place, especially if an absurdly powerful magical person wants you dead. Delilah sends a pack of undead wolves after the group and the tense build up to the reveal of their horrific design is palpable. After kidnapping Scanlan, the wolves lead the group on a thrilling chase. Keyleth’s defense of Vax and Grog literally ripping a wolf to shreds are definite highlights. But the group loses Delilah’s book and nearly tumbles off the side of a cliff. They even lose their recently acquired bag of loot. Someone rolled poorly.

#7: Jailbreak

“Spark of Rebellion”

Vox Machina aren’t the only ones who want to see the Briarwoods brought down. By teaming up with a group of Whitestone rebels, the team leads a jailbreak to save Percy’s childhood friend, Archie. What follows is a riveting close quarters brawl with incredible spells and visceral violence. Scanlan and Grog continue to offer great comedic relief; the Bard creates a copy of himself while the Barbarian gets distracted by barrels of ale. Keyleth, growing ever fiercer, transforms into a tiger while Percy gets to cross off the first name on the list of those who murdered his family. It’s a fun, blood-soaked fight that ends with the fantastic reveal that Percy’s sister is still alive.

#6: Bad Teacher

“A Silver Tongue”

Each name on Percy’s list is that of a savage villain, but there was something specifically satisfying about Professor Anders’ end. Once a teacher to Percy and Cassandra, he betrayed the de Rolo family to benefit his own pursuit of power. And that power was absolutely terrifying. Anders brings suits of armor to life to do his bidding, making the fight more even. When that doesn’t work, he charms Percy’s allies to his dirty work, beginning with the intimidating Grog. Seeing Percy fail to stop Anders’ control of his friends had our eyes glued to the screen. In one of the coolest things Percy does throughout the season, he ricochets a bullet to take away Anders’ only weapon before assassinating him.

#5: Pike’s Divine Intervention

“The Tide of Bone”

As the team begins to rack up victories in Whitestone, Delilah buys some time with an army of the undead, including a few giants. The battle is all but lost until Pike shows up. With enemies bearing down on her allies, Pike projects herself onto the battlefield via a massive beam of light, cutting a giant in half and mowing down a swarm of zombies in the process. It’s a victorious, fist-pumping moment, bringing hope and turning the tide of the battle. It may seem like a deus ex machina, but being a Paladin, Pike’s holy magic is incredibly effective against undead enemies. Considering she had struggled with her abilities for most of the season, seeing her unleash her might had us jumping with joy.

#4: The Demon Inside

“The Darkness Within”

As Percy gets closer to quenching his thirst for vengeance, his friends become increasingly uneasy of what may become of him. In the season finale, the group finally comes face to face with the demon who has aided Percy all this time. The following fight is an emotional one; as the possessed Percy attempts to kill a now-defenseless Delilah, the team must defend her so as not to lose someone they care deeply for. In between the exciting action, we see Percy relive his past trauma as the demon tries to get him to murder his friends. Percy surrounded by the shadowy presence creates striking visuals as he dashes around. Luckily, the demon is unsuccessful and Percy breaks free by shooting himself in the hand.

#3: Dragon Fight, Round 2

“The Terror of Tal’Dorei - Part 2”

Before the Briarwood arc begins, Vox Machina must prove themselves by taking on a dragon. Their loss when they first encounter it is an important lesson for the group (Xref). When they face it again, they know how to play to their advantage. It takes some time however, with the team running scattered amidst the dragon’s devastating lighting attacks. But with some help from Scanlan’s magic, they stage an argument to catch him off guard. Each member’s prowess is showcased wonderfully, from Scanlan throwing the knife-wielding Vax to Pike infusing Vex’s arrow to Grog declaring what Barbarians do best (“I would like to RAGE!”). The animation is stunning and the dragon’s defeat is jaw-dropping. It showed how capable a team Vox Machina could be once they play to their strengths.

#2: Scanlan’s Distraction

“Scanbo”

With his raunchy humor and silly yet highly useful abilities, Scanlan the bard is one of the show’s breakout characters. While the others try to rescue Cassandra in the seventh episode, Scanlan offers a distraction plan of burning down Duke Vedmire’s house. And he is almost immediately discovered, leading to the funniest fight in the show. He uses several potions of unknown effect; one makes him teleport, another makes him shrink, and the third makes him breathe fire. He also uses a scroll to transform into a triceratops and begins rampaging around. During the final confrontation with Vedmire, Scanlan shoots lightning from his crotch. For a character with the most chaotic energy, it’s only fitting that his solo fight be just as frantic.

#1: Boss Fight

“Whispers at the Ziggurat”

It was all leading to this: the final fight against Delilah and Sylus Briarwood. It did not disappoint. In a battle that takes up the majority of the episode, Vox Machina clash with the villains and the possessed Cassandra and Vax. It has everything you could possibly want from a stellarly animated battle. Emotionally resonant fights between two sets of siblings, a rematch between Grog and Sylus, Delilah’s clever use of Silence on Scanlan. No one is pulling their punches and every character gets to shine. But the one who shines the brightest, literally, is Keyleth. By tapping into the roots of the Sun Tree, she’s able to summon sunlight, reinvigorating her friends and decimating Sylus as Grog holds him in place.
