Top 10 Best Impressions in SNL Audition Sketches

Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the funniest and/or most accurate impressions from “SNL” audition skits.
#10: Heidi Gardner as Kristen Schaal
It’s the impression nobody expected, but that makes it ten times better. Heidi Gardner changes her hair and changes her facial expressions to become Kristen Schaal. With only a few moments to shine, the cast member can make some convincing sounds as the actress. Even her subtle reactions and brief noises call to mind the “Bob’s Burgers” performer. Gardner’s work is super precise in a sketch-stealing performance. Nothing short of underrated, this impersonation deserves mention alongside the other “SNL” veterans. It’s also a unique take on someone who doesn’t always get this kind of spotlight.
#9: Pete Davidson as Adam Sandler
Becoming the “Happy Gilmore” lead, Pete Davidson does justice to Adam Sandler. He’s able to nail down the comedian’s performance style, from his specific way of speaking to his musical comedy. Davidson sings with the same kind of conviction as Sandler, altering his voice in a dedicated role. The yelling makes things even funnier. He might not be as well known for his impressions, but this role gives the younger cast member a chance to show off his other skills. We also wish that one or both of these performers show up in a dinosaur movie.
#8: Matt Damon as Matthew McConaughey
Even before this “SNL” sketch, Matt Damon was known to try out his Matthew McConaughey impression. The “Bourne” actor finds a way into the Texan’s accent and general demeanor. More specifically, he can even ramble as the beloved target. The script lets him dive into a monologue about the Oscars and time travel. Not only is Damon talented in his own right. He can make fun of his fellow Hollywood stars like the best of them. It’s a hilarious way to lampoon McConaughey’s charismatic persona. By the end of it, you might just have to say “alright, alright, alright.”
#7: Taran Killam as Christoph Waltz
Underrated for his time, Taran Killam does a surprisingly accurate take on Christoph Waltz. This involves capturing the vibrance of the Austrian actor’s delivery. Doing a solid accent, Killam plays off of Miley Cyrus’ Scarlett Johansson impression. Waltz’s energy really comes through with the comedian’s performance. With a giddy presence, the cast member lights up the screen with a beard and glasses. It’s also commendable to do an impersonation that’s not as well known. Killam treads new territory here, but does so with complete confidence. He deserves to be mentioned among the best impressionists in recent “SNL” history.
#6: Kate McKinnon as Lisa Kudrow
As any number of characters, Kate McKinnon is a sure-fire bet to get people laughing. She’s especially funny in her minimalist take on Lisa Kudrow. Playing the “Friends” star, the cast member matches the performer’s speaking voice. It’s also hilarious to imagine Kudrow in the “Jurassic Park” world. With all kinds of small mannerisms and inflections, McKinnon nails down the comic actor’s personality. The “SNL” legend once again reminds you of her ability to transform into almost anybody. As if she couldn’t be more impressive, this same talent powers other impersonations like Michelle Wolf.
#5: Kenan Thompson as Sinbad
With an amazing wig and vintage clothes, Kenan Thompson embodies the comic spirit of Sinbad. The cast member lights up this “Top Gun” sketch with his energy. As the famed comedian, Thompson’s impression hijacks the audition space for his personal routine. This includes grabbing a microphone and pacing around to do material. With some funny observations, this performance nails the general stand-up aesthetic. It’s even better that this impersonation goes completely off-topic. The “SNL” veteran owns the skit with his complete determination, giving a tour-de-force that stands next to his work as Steve Harvey.
#4: Jon Hamm as Robin Williams
Channeling the comedian’s stage presence, Jon Hamm finds the essence of Robin Williams, constantly moving and doing different voices. It’s a fantastic impression, but it’s also incredibly difficult to pull off. Hamm never slows down in a tornado of comic fury. The “Mad Men” star could easily be a cast member with how amazing this performance is. In a fitting tribute to Williams, this off-the-wall impersonation hits all the right buttons. You could easily watch him take over the entire sketch. We certainly hope that the performer brings this back, with the script giving him enough material to do a one-man show.
#3: Chloe Fineman as Natasha Lyonne
Natasha Lyonne might be best known for her trademark voice. Chloe Fineman’s impression of her is one highlight of a sketch that also includes an accurate Britney Spears. Fineman gets the depth of the “Russian Doll” star’s delivery, but she also parodies the latter’s personality. This includes channeling the star’s sometimes sarcastic vibe, giving diehard fans something to appreciate. There are also some funny moments featuring cigarettes and censorship. In the “Wicked” audition skit, she shows off her other impersonations from Martha Stewart to Leslie Mann. No matter the job, Fineman is a versatile impressionist who truly embodies her characters.
#2: Bill Hader as Alan Alda
If you know Bill Hader well, you know he’s one of the finest impressionists in “SNL” history. Alan Alda might not be the most popular or current impression, but Hader makes him funnier for a general audience. This impersonation puts Alda in a “Jurassic Park” audition that includes an Australian accent. Hader brings this “MASH” star to life, making for an accurate take on the actor’s voice. It’s yet another chance for the former cast member to get big laughs. There are plenty of inside jokes and TV references to enjoy, giving viewers of all kinds something to love.
#1: Jay Pharoah as Eddie Murphy
Sometimes underrated and never disappointing, Jay Pharoah has a great lineup of voices in his repertoire. His Eddie Murphy might be among his best impressions, with this version of the “Beverly Hills Cop” actor trying out for “Back to the Future.” Pharoah captures the legendary comedian’s essence in a short amount of time. With hand motions and speech patterns, he can mimic Murphy in specific ways. The cast member can even do a convincing take on the subject’s laugh. You can’t help but salute this accurate impersonation before it’s over.
