Top 10 Games With the Best Sniping
Boom headshot. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’ll be counting down the Top 10 Games With the Best Sniping. Before we begin, we post new content everyday, so be sure to subscribe.
For this list, we’ll be taking a look at the games with the best sniping gameplay. The game doesn’t have to only focus on sniping itself, but it must contain the option, or feature it prominently. Also, since we’re talking about sniping people, so a mature warning is in effect.
The Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon series prides itself upon being stealthy, and tactical. While Wildlands has mixed it up by allowing you to go guns blazing, stealth kills are still viewed as the better option; and what better way to pick off your targets then with a trusty sniper rifle? With a giant open world at your disposal, there are near limitless means of sniping down your targets. It may not offer the most realistic bullet physics, but how many times can you say you got to take down an enemy helicopter by sniping?
Finally got that AWP! CSGO is a highly competitive game, and the mechanics rely on hair-trigger reactions and accuracy. With most maps having long open areas with little to hide behind, many players elect one to monitor them with sniper rifles. While the AWP’s power is unmatched in terms of damage, like all the other sniper rifles, it requires immense reaction timing. Missing that one chance at a headshot could spell death for you, and a brand new sniper rifle for the enemy team.
Now before you say anything, no we aren’t talking about all those annoying quickscopers, we’re leaving the multiplayer out here. Fans will remember the mission All Ghillied Up, placed in the boots of a younger Price as they set out to assassinate Imran Zakhaev. The mission featured prominent stealth and sniping, with few checkpoints, making for a very intense and challenging mission. Unlike most of the CoD series, you can’t pick and choose any target you want, as you need to make sure not to raise an alarm. After several missions of all out firefights, it was a surprising and excellent change of pace.
If you’ve ever been to an arcade in the past two decades, you’ve probably seen a variation of Time Crisis. A classic on-rails FPS game, the series grew in popularity, eventually seeing home console releases -some with additional content from their arcade counterparts. Time Crisis 3 is no different, as it introduced a new set of missions and a new character, featuring sniping sections. While sniping typically takes a backseat in the series, it was a fun addition in 3. Keeping the fast paced nature intact, you have to quickly take out targets from a distance, as well as lights to keep your whereabouts hidden.
DICE’s Battlefield series loves to boast large… battlefields… in every iteration; and with large areas to play on, there’s bound to be plenty of opportune sniping. With the latest game going back to WW1, sniping needed a bit of a change-up. The lack of modern weaponry advancements and better scopes makes sniping slightly more of a challenge. Keeping the fast paced action alive required a few tweaks however, making the older weaponry not the most realistic. With less structures to hide in or behind, most snipers are forced to be in open areas - on hilltops and cliffs- taking down their targets one by one.
The Hitman series is known for its ruthless and tactical stealth kills as you use the environment, people, and arsenal to kill your targets through various means. As a mobile game, Hitman: Sniper limits you to a single position, as you snipe at your targets from a great distance. What it lacks in depth, it makes up for in it’s satisfying sniping action. The game grows more difficult as more guards are added, targets walk behind barriers, and you need to calibrate for the bullet travel distance. One does have to wonder though why your targets keep thinking it’s a good idea to all be at the same mansion.
The latest in the series of extremely realistic military shooters, ARMA 3 ups the ante - introducing a much larger playing field, and granting a deeper sense of immersion. Sniping in ARMA 3 takes a large amount of careful planning, as you must conceal and use a rangefinder to judge your target’s distance -no minimaps here. You’ll also have to take in account not just the bullet travel and drop off, but the environment as well. While it may not be as fast-paced for what most FPS gamers have come to expect, it’s a fun challenge to those who seek for a more realistic shooter.
The Ghost Warrior series is an interesting one, where some sniping games feature other forms of gameplay, Ghost Warrior 2 sticks to its rifle and takes it slow and quiet. Keeping up with the slower more tactical pacing, realistic bullet physics are implemented, making extra sure you pick your targets wisely and account for timing. While it may not appeal to the modern gamer who’s used to more fast-paced action, for those seeking more strategy and stealth as a sniper, this is a fantastic game.
We’ve seen them all the time in arcades, plastic guns attached to big cabinets offering up a fast-paced FPS experience. While sniping and fast-paced don’t always go together, Silent Scope seems to heighten the pace, as you’re given a very limited timer to take down each target. Each kill grants you a bit more time, as you take down terrorist after terrorist to save the US President’s family. Intense, challenging and above all classic fun, this an underrated arcade game that desperately needs a proper revival.
Rebellion has made quite the impact with their Sniper Elite series of games, made especially popular by its x-ray cam. With the latest release, 4 has continued to show improvements as the series moves into a much larger open-ended level design, offering more ways to approach scenarios. Sniping is made to be realistic, as it factors in wind, bullet drop, and breathing. Let’s be honest, realistic immersion and fantastic gameplay aside, we all come to see that bullet pass through a Nazi’s skull, and boy does it look as good as ever.
