Top 10 Biggest Celebrity Halloween Costume Fails
#10: Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson
From 2009 to 2013, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson made for a real life Bella and Edward (minus all the blood sucking - we hope). And while they don’t really seem like Halloween people, we expected a little more than this! In 2012, shortly after their first split, the couple attended Hollywood Forever Cemetery’s Halloween bash with plastic transparent masks. The masks gave Pattinson large eyebrows and a mustache and Stewart a permanent grin. In other words, it was a pretty lazy costume. Pattinson later told MTV that he snagged the mask at a 7/11 for $3. Now isn’t that the Halloween spirit?
#9: Tara Reid
Is it weird to go as Santa for Halloween? Your mileage may vary, but yes, it is. This isn’t “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” And what about a “sexy Santa” that barely holds any relevance to the jolly red man whatsoever? Tara Reid of “American Pie” and “Sharknado” fame turned heads and made headlines in 2016 when she dressed as a skimpy Santa. The costume consisted of a red and sparkly bandeau, feathery micro-skirt, and Santa hat. Reid also garnered concern from fans and the media alike for her extremely slim figure, which was on full display with this holiday-themed ensemble.
#8: Lance Bass
Everyone has a friend like Robert Pattinson - the guy who doesn’t really take Halloween seriously and comes in a $3 mask he quickly grabbed from 7/11 on the way over. And then there are people like Lance Bass, who do… whatever this is. In 2011, Bass attended the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s Halloweenie party dressed as some abstract nightmare creation. He had a white face with dripping mascara and blonde, rock star/anime hair. He also donned feathers, a cut-up yellow and black plaid shirt, multi-colored arm guards, pink pants, black boots, and what looks like a child’s skirt wrapped around his right thigh. Very creative, but also very confusing.
#7: Aaron Carter
Pimps are a pretty standard Halloween costume. But what about a 14-year-old kid dressing as one? In 2002, when Carter was still 14, he attended a charity event dressed as an over-the-top pimp. The costume consisted of a leopard-skinned hat, a massively oversized combination purple and leopard-skinned jacket, large diamond earrings, and glasses in the shape of gold dollar signs. It’s certainly a creative costume, we’ll give him that. There’s just something a little unsettling about a 14-year-old kid going as a person who sells women’s bodies. However stereotypical and outrageous that depiction may be...
#6: Scott Disick
In 2014, Scott Disick of Kardashian family fame dressed as an Arab Sheik for Halloween, complete with the traditional red headscarf and flowing white robe. While most of Disick’s fans showed a positive response to the costume, some people called him out on the stereotypical depiction and for appropriating Arab culture. Things got even worse when Khloé Kardashian, who was dressed as a sexy cat, posted a rather inappropriate caption that had her followers incensed. It was an unfortunate combination of poor costume choice and insensitive comments, resulting in both fans and the media criticizing the couple’s Halloween decisions.
#5: Hilary Duff & Jason Walsh
It seems like every year a celebrity is forced to apologize for their insensitive costume. In the mid-2010s, those celebrities were Hilary Duff and Jason Walsh. For L.A.’s Casamigos Halloween party, Duff and her boyfriend Walsh dressed as a sexy pilgrim and a Native American respectively. Walsh in particular went all out, complete with a feathered headpiece and red paint streaked across his eyes. Duff’s pilgrim costume also came equipped with a fake gun. Many people complained of the inappropriate costume choice on social media, leading both Duff and Walsh to issue public apologies through Twitter and Instagram. Just a few years earlier, Paris Hilton had also drawn criticism for dressing as a Native American.
#4: Chris Brown
This popular R&B artist continued his string of controversy by dressing as a terrorist for Halloween in 2012. It was… not a great look. The costume consisted of a tan-colored robe, a greenish-brown vest, a turban, and a bandolier sash. In one particular Instagram photo, Brown was also seen sporting a fake beard and pointing an assault rifle at the sky. The costume obviously drew intense criticism online - for a wide variety of reasons. However, Brown’s mother rushed to her son’s defense on Twitter, telling his critics to “get a life.”
#3: Tia Mowry
In 2013, actress Tia Mowry dressed up as a Japanese geisha and posted a photo of her oshiroi makeup, pink fan, and traditional Japanese hairstyle on social media. Some of her followers weren’t very thrilled. While the makeup work is admittedly quite good, it was the idea of dressing up as a geisha in the first place that had people enraged. Some thought it bordered on yellowface, with others claiming cultural appropriation. One user in particular reportedly wrote, “My race and the races of others are not a costume for a cheesy holiday.”
#2: Julianne Hough
“Dancing with the Stars”’ Julianne Hough found herself in some very hot water when she donned blackface in 2013 to go as Crazy Eyes for Halloween. Crazy Eyes, real name Suzanne Warren, is a popular character on Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black.” Actress Isla Fisher, who was attending the same Halloween party, allegedly told Hough to wipe the make-up off her face before the media got wind of it. The media got wind of it. Hough was quick to issue an apology, saying she is a big fan of the show and meant no disrespect. Uzo Aduba, the actress who plays Suzanne, called it “an unfortunate event” but forgave Hough and asked everyone to move on.
#1: Lily Allen
In October of 2014, Kesha shocked the world by suing popular music producer Dr. Luke for a wide variety of criminal offenses, including gender violence, infliction of emotional abuse, and sexual assault. Apparently Lily Allen thought this made great fodder for a Halloween costume. The same month that Kesha filed her lawsuit, Allen dressed as a literal doctor for Halloween, complete with teal scrubs and a name tag that offensively read, “Dr. Luke, Gynecology Department.” The costume was in horribly bad taste. And even though TMZ claimed that Kesha and Allen were good friends, a “good friend” doesn’t jokingly dress as the man who allegedly drugged and assaulted the other.
