Top 10 GamesCom Announcements
This year, the games shown off at GamesCom have been … well … how do I put this: Headline Worthy. Name’s Dave with WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down the Top 10 GamesCom Announcements.
So for this list I’m counting down some of the biggest reveals we’ve seen from GamesCom. Ranging from the Good, the Bad and the Ehhhhhhhhhhh. Have fun guessing which is which.
Let’s start was a more positive announcement. The first Everspace, which is currently available on all modern platforms; is a Rouge-like/Space combat hybrid and it’s a pretty fun title at that despite a few flaws. While it’s a long ways off with a 2021 release window, it looks like the game will be getting a boosted number of environments, including an underground cavern, flying through a space station and WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING? Guess we’ll have to wait to find out.
Interactive FMV titles are slowly starting to make their resurgence, most notable being Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch on Netflix. Now we have this PS4 Exclusive title which made its announcement known; on the day of it’s release. At time of writing however, this interactive mystery/thriller hasn’t gone down well with critics. It’s early days but currently its sitting in the yellow on Metacritic, though that could all change once GamesCom is over.
“Comanche” for those of you who don’t know; was a series of attack helicopter simulator games for the PC in the 90’s, with the last entry in the series being released in 2001. So imagine our hype when THQ Nortic announced they were bringing series back from the dead … as an online multiplayer game … WHAT? I thought we had learned our lesson about bringing back dead franchises as unfaithful cashgrabs! … guess not. Damn It!
On the other hand, here’s a multiplayer title that actually does appear to be faithful to its source material. Just like the debut film, this game see’s you and a group of friends attempting to complete a paramilitary operation, all the while an opposing player takes control of The Predator, who has all his gadgets at his disposal to take your team down. While there’s some criticism about the quality of the graphics, the concept does seem promising. Let’s see if IllFonic can live up to that promise.
Hang on I need to get into character for this one: In our unified goal to reach the stars, it falls upon the shoulders of inexperienced gamers around the world; to build rockets and space stations capable of sending cute green men and woman, to the edges of the solar system and beyond. We trust that their gaming knowledge, can build sturdy facilities capable of surviving the inhospitable environments, in the unpredictable void of space, and on a relatively cheap budget. Ok I’m not going to keep going, but damn, this trailer was hilarious and epic at the same time.
It almost feels like clockwork now doesn’t it. “Magic the Gathering: Arena” has been in open beta since September last year, with a release date expected this winter. That announcement came but there was a catch: It was now an Epic Game Store exclusive. And just like the dozens or so other times that other titles went Epic exclusive, there’s already a lot of backlash. I’d go on, but at this stage I think I would just be repeating myself from the Shenmue 3 Epic Store announcement.
Exclusivity backlash strikes again, but this one stings a lot more. “Orc’s Must Die” is a series of Third Person Action/Tower Defense games, that obtained a cult following. The most recent free-to-play title however: “Orc’s Must Die Unchained”. Was recently shutdown after it failed to turn a profit, and the company ran into financial issues. So while we can understand the need to go exclusive to stay afloat. The choice of going with Google Stadia is a painful one though, because it means the only way to play the game is through a cloud streaming service, and not everyone has access to an ideal Internet connection. Thankfully it’s a Timed Exclusive.
While the game was revealed back at E3, the lack of gameplay and uninspired character designs of the heroes left a lot of skepticism hovering over the title. This time however, we got to see the Avengers assemble in live gameplay; and it looked better. Thor channels Kratos’s fight style, Iron Man going Star Fox on us, Hulk doing what he does best, Captain America has a unique combat style; And Black Widow going toe to toe with Taskmaster. It was a well improved showing, still a bit QuickTime heavy, but better than before.
Previously “Cuphead”, a former Xbox One exclusive was released for the Switch. And now it seems that Microsoft is continuing the good will, by bringing the incredible “Ori & The Blind Forest” to Nintendo’s handheld hybrid. Between all this, and Banjo & Kazooie coming to Smash, it makes us wonder how far this new friendship between Microsoft & Nintendo will go. Though I think I speak for every Nintendo fan when I say; there is one game we really need on the Switch.
Once again Hideo Kojima continues to be as cryptic as ever in regards his upcoming pet project. This time we saw that the gameplay involved: Taking a piss, climbing a retractable ladder, and delivering a package to The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley because … uhhh … I’ll get back to you. However the reveal also garnered backlash from some fans over the fact that; nothing meaningful really happened. While Kojima does have a great track record, we would prefer it if he didn’t follow in John Romero’s footsteps, so please Kojima don’t let us down at Tokyo Game Show.
