Top 10 Bizarre Coincidences That Happened on the Same Day/Date

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today were counting down our picks for the most mind-blowing coincidences in history that are even harder to believe because they occurred on the exact same date.

#10: Twins Die in Separate but Identical Accidents

March 5th 2002

Identical twins share a bond like no other same birthday, identical DNA and some even claim they can feel each others pain. But what are the odds of identical twins meeting their end in separate accidents on the same day, in the same location and in an eerily similar manner? On March 5th 2002, a 70-year-old man was riding his bike in Raahe, Finland when he was hit by a truck and killed instantly. Roughly two hours later, his identical twin brother cycled about a mile away on the same road when he too was hit by a truck and lost his life. The incidents were especially confounding as the family hadnt even been informed of the first accident when the second one occurred.

#9: The Deaths of Actor Josh Ryan Evans & His Onscreen Character

August 5th 2002

Hollywood actor Josh Ryan Evans was born with achondroplasia, a rare disease that stunted his growth and gave him the appearance of a child even in adulthood. Rather than let this hold him back, Evans used his unique appearance to his advantage, snagging roles as both children and adults in films like How The Grinch Stole Christmas and the soap opera Passions. In 2002, after three years on the show, Evans left Passions to undergo critical heart surgery and his character was killed off. In a bizarre twist, the episode where his character dies aired on August 5th, the same day Evans tragically passed away during surgery. He was only 20 years old and just three feet two inches tall.

#8: The U.S. & the UK Get Their Own Dennis the Menace

March 12th 1951

Depending on where youre from, Dennis the Menace might bring to mind either a blond, round-faced troublemaker in dungarees, or a spiky-haired rascal in a red and black striped shirt. This is because there are actually two versions of Dennis: the former, created by American animator Hank Ketcham, while the latter was the brainchild of British cartoonist David Law. Heres where it gets weird. Despite sharing the exact same name and a few other common traits, these two characters had absolutely nothing to do with each other. Neither Ketcham nor Law knew about the others creation beforehand, and even stranger, both comic strips hit shelves in the U.S. and the UK on the exact same day, March 12th 1951.

#7: The Deaths of Multiple Writers & One President

November 22nd

November 22nd 1963 is a date etched in history for all the wrong reasons. On that fateful day, Dallas, Texas was bustling with crowds eager to see President John F. Kennedy. But as his motorcade rolled through, Kennedy was fatally struck with two bullets fired from a nearby building by Lee Harvey Oswald. The media frenzy over his assassination was so overwhelming that many didnt notice the literary world also took a hit. Renowned English writers C. S. Lewis, famous for The Chronicles of Narnia series, and Aldous Huxley, best known for Brave New World both died on the same day. Coincidentally, exactly 30 years later on November 22nd 1993, another British author, Anthony Burgess, who wrote A Clockwork Orange, also passed away.

#6: Theodore Roosevelts Wife & Mother Die

February 14th 1884

Valentines Day is usually a time for love and affection, but for Theodore Roosevelt in 1884, it was a day marked by devastating loss. Just two days earlier, on February 12th, while Roosevelt was out of town, his wife, Alice, gave birth to their daughter. His joy was however short-lived, as he soon received news that both Alice and his mother, Martha, were gravely ill. Roosevelt rushed back home, arriving just in time to see his mother succumb to typhoid fever in the early hours of February 14th. Mere hours later, in the same house, Alice also passed away from kidney failure. A grief-stricken Roosevelt marked that day in his diary with a large X, writing, The light has gone out of my life.

#5: Mein Kampf & The Diary of Anne Frank Enter Public Domain

January 1st 2016

In the European Union, copyright law grants authors rights to their works for 70 years after their death. This rule resulted in a darkly ironic coincidence. As both Anne Frank and Adolf Hitler died in 1945, their books - Franks diary and Hitlers Mein Kampf - entered the public domain on January 1st 2016. The diary, a poignant account of a Jewish girl hiding during the Holocaust, contrasts starkly with Hitlers hateful manifesto, which fueled the very atrocities described in Franks account. Though many feared that the wide availability of Mein Kampf might spread Hitlers vile beliefs, its simultaneous release with Franks diary served as a blunt reminder of the horrors those beliefs inspired and the need to combat them.

#4: Stephen Hawkings Connection to Two Famous Scientists

January 8th & March 14th

Stephen Hawking was a genius in every sense of the word. Throughout his illustrious career, he developed groundbreaking work, reshaping our understanding of theoretical physics and cosmology. But his life was bookended by cosmic coincidences that were nothing short of uncanny. Hawking was born on January 8th 1942, exactly 300 years after the death of Italian physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei. By the looks of this, he seemed destined to carry on the scientific torch. After being diagnosed with Lou Gehrigs disease at 21, Hawking defied the odds and lived to 76, passing away peacefully on March 14th 2018. In another strange coincidence, this happened to be the birthday of another great scientist, Albert Einstein. Talk about a cosmic connection.

#3: The Curse of the Billy Goat

October 22nd

Okay, this one might sound a bit silly, but just stick with us. Back in 1945, a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan named William Sianis attended the World Series with his pet goat. But as the goats antics annoyed the other fans, Sianis was kicked out of the stadium. A furious Sianis allegedly cursed the Cubs, vowing theyd never win another pennant. Sure enough, the Cubs lost that year and kept losing even after Sianis passed away on October 22nd 1970. Lo and behold, on October 22nd 2016, exactly 46 years after Sianis death, the Cubs finally won a pennant and, for the first time in over a century, clinched the World Series. It was as though the curse was lifted from beyond the grave.

#2: The Death of Two Founding Fathers

July 4th 1826

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were key figures in the founding of America, sharing a deep friendship and a passionate rivalry. Both men worked together in drafting the Declaration of Independence in 1776, but were driven apart by their ambition and political differences. Jefferson served as the vice president under Adams, then challenged him for the presidency in 1800 and won. Despite their disagreements, they rekindled their friendship later in life through a series of letters. Their relationship culminated in a strange coincidence, as both men died on July 4th 1826, exactly 50 years after signing the Declaration of Independence. Adams last words reportedly were Thomas Jefferson survives, oblivious to the fact that Jefferson had in fact died just hours earlier.

#1: The I Have a Dream Speech & Barack Obamas Presidential Nomination

August 28th

On August 28th 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic I Have a Dream speech during the March on Washington, a rallying cry for racial equality. It was a defining moment in the civil rights movement, with King yearning for a future free of racism. While were still chasing that vision, a significant stride was made exactly 45 years later. On August 28th 2008, Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for president, becoming the first Black nominee of a major U.S. political party. The symbolism wasnt lost on anyone, especially the late Congressman John Lewis, who had been at the March on Washington and recognized this moment as a step towards realizing Kings dream.
