Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Brutal Over the Top Deaths in DreamWorks Movies. For this list, we’ll be looking at the most gruesome and/or ridiculous times characters in the studio’s films presumably passed away. Naturally, there will be spoilers ahead. Is there a grim or outlandish death you think we missed? Let us know in the comments!

#10: Puss in Boots

Top 20 Things Only Adults Notice in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (2022) Apparently, cats don’t always land on their feet. In “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”, Puss finds out that his reckless nature is coming back to haunt him. After wasting 8 of the 9 lives he’s allowed, Death (yep, capital D Death) is out to take the feline’s last life. From being trampled by bulls, to mauled by dogs, to trying to break new ground with cannon travel, Puss’ deaths are utterly ridiculous. They also look particularly painful! Still, we have to give him some credit. It takes a special kind of skill to be able to piss Death off for dying too much.

#9: The Giant Shark

Top 10 Most Brutal Deaths in Paranormal Movies

“Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” (2008) What’s the best way to get fresh water? If you answered with ‘ritualistic sacrifice’, you probably have a lot in common with King Julien. In “Escape 2 Africa” the Central Park Zoo gang ends up on a nature reserve in Africa. But problems arise when the construction of a dam leads to a major water shortage. King Julien suggests one of them sacrifice themselves to a volcano as a solution. Understandably, it’s a tall order. But they get their sacrifice when the giant shark that had been chasing Mort falls into the scorching lava below. It’s actually impressive how persistent the creature was in trying to eat the adorable lemur. Still, all we can say is ouch.

#8: Dr. Zara

Also in:

Top 10 Most Unexpected Brutal Deaths in Teen Movies

“Abominable” (2019) Falling off a cliff is certainly up there in terms of brutal deaths. “Abominable” spotlights Yi, a young girl who befriends a Yeti she calls Everest, as she and her friends try to get him home. They’re not the only ones who are aware of Everest though. One of the people chasing after them is zoologist Dr. Zara. She might seem nice at first, but don’t let that fool you – she's cold-blooded. Trying to capture and sell Everest, Zara ultimately gets what’s coming to her in the end. What’s worse than being hit by an avalanche? We’d say being hit by an avalanche that you’re responsible for. Maybe justice is a dish best served cold, too.

#7: Gallaxhar

“Monsters vs. Aliens” (2009) With a movie called “Monsters vs. Aliens”, you pretty much know what you’re getting. Gallaxhar, an alien conqueror who looks like a squid, decides to invade Earth for its quantonium. So it’s up to the Monsters to stop him. In the movie’s climactic final battle, Gallaxhar finds that he and his clone army are on the losing side when his ship is set to self-destruct. Dr. Cockroach triggered it by breaking out into an epic dance sequence – groovy right? Desperately trying to flee via an escape pod, Gallaxhar’s hopes go up in smoke alongside him and his soldiers. It’s bad enough to be caught in an explosion, but to be going down with dozens of other yous? That has to be outright mortifying!

#6: Red Death

Also in:

Top 10 Most BRUTAL Deaths in B Movies

“How to Train Your Dragon” (2010) It’s not too often that one's name foreshadows their demise. “How to Train Your Dragon” follows Hiccup, a teenager who lives in Berk, a village filled with Vikings who slay dragons. When Hiccup tries to kill a small one, he eventually ends up dubbing him Toothless, and they become the best of friends. The rest of the movie isn’t all sunshines and rainbows though. A gigantic dragon called the Red Death is awakened by the Vikings, quickly overpowering them. The beast only gets defeated when Toothless shoots a fireball into its mouth. Hitting the ground, Red Death dies in a fiery explosion of red and orange flames. It’s nothing short of a spectacle, and again, how’s that for foreshadowing?

#5: Lord Shen

Top 10 Biggest Differences Between The Lord Of The Rings Movies And Books

“Kung Fu Panda 2” (2011) The second installment in the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise sees Po and the Furious Five meeting Lord Shen. Shen is a peacock obsessed with gunpowder weaponry who wants to rid the world of Kung Fu. For Po, the whole thing is deeply personal as Shen was responsible for a major culling of China’s pandas, seemingly including Po’s biological parents. In their final fight, Shen causes his own death by slicing through a rope holding one of his cannons. The cannon’s gunpowder would also destroy the entire ship. It’s not the last time a villain would be killed by their own ambitions. “Kung Fu Panda 3” sees Kai meeting a similarly ironic demise by getting overloaded with Chi energy, the thing he sought most.

#4: Pitch Black

Also in:

Top 10 Terrifying Pitch Black Scenes in Horror Movies

“Rise of the Guardians” (2012) What if your favorite holiday mascots were like superheroes? “Rise of the Guardians” shows us how awesome that would be. The Guardians are a team of folkloric legends. Among the roster are Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny, just to name a few. Pitch Black, the King of Nightmares, develops a plot to plague children’s dreams and erode their belief in our heroes. But this Boogeyman is bested when his subservient Nightmares eventually rebel against him, and seemingly finish him off for good! Not only is it ruthless, but it also seems just a tad embarrassing. What could be considered the personification of Fear gets defeated by that same emotion. Irony really appears to be a recurring theme on this list!

#3: Frankie

“Shark Tale” (2004) “Shark Tale” follows a fish named Oscar who spreads an elaborate lie that he killed Frankie, the son of a ruthless mobster shark named Don Lino. With Frankie now gone, Oscar teams up with Don’s younger son Lenny, as they get into more trouble. You know the phrase “anchored down”? Well, how about “struck down by an anchor”? Because that’s how Frankie actually went out in “Shark Tale”. The death is as chilling as it is random. But with the plot largely hinging on his demise, you could argue that the movie just wouldn’t be the same without the brutal moment. Sorry, Frankie, sometimes the universe just works in mysterious ways.

#2: Lord Farquaad

Also in:

Top 10 Villains in The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit Movies

“Shrek” (2001) In 2001’s “Shrek”, Lord Farquaad, ruler of a place called Duloc, tries to marry Princess Fiona so he can become king. Things don’t go quite his way though, as Shrek the ogre interrupts their marriage ceremony. After Fiona becomes an ogre too, things really start to go south for him. Farquaad’s temper, not unlike his height, is short. And in the middle of his rant, he gets gruesomely eaten by an arriving dragon. Talk about one heck of an over the top way to kick the bucket…Needless to say, Farquaad’s death is probably the most memorable one in the entire “Shrek” universe. After all, getting consumed by a giant dragon is no picnic — unless you’re the dragon of course.

#1: Mrs. Tweedy

Also in:

Top 10 Most Brutal Deaths In Horror Movies

“Chicken Run” (2000) Mrs. Tweedy gets her just deserts in this fitting defeat. In “Chicken Run”, a rooster named Rocky meets a group of chickens who need his help to escape their prison-like farm. Using a deadly machine, Mrs. Tweedy wants to ruthlessly turn them into chicken pies. But when the chickens rally together, her plans all come crashing down. The pie machine is destroyed when Mrs. Tweedy ends up in its safety valve, causing a gigantic explosion. But surprisingly, that’s not what kills her. The final nail in her coffin is when her husband, Mr. Tweedy, seemingly slams the barn’s door onto her. We highly doubt she could’ve survived that crushing defeat.
