Top 10 Cartoon Couples With the Best Chemistry

Welcome to MsMojo, today we’re counting down our picks for animated couples with the most heartwarming dynamic.

#10: Bob & Linda Belcher

“Bob’s Burgers” (2011-)

We’re beginning with the iconic couple from “Bob’s Burgers.” Their relationship began in a bar, meeting when Linda was still engaged to Hugo. After seeing Bob’s “Tom Selleck-ian mustache,” and getting her engagement ring stuck in it, the pair fell in love. Together, they are pure hilarity. The two both run the restaurant, a job neither could do on their own. They’re constantly getting up to wacky antics, like silly competitions between themselves or their children. Without their dynamic, the show just wouldn’t work. Just as their marriage has endured, so has this long-running series.

#9: Robin & Starfire

“Teen Titans” (2003-06)

These two heroes got off to a bad start, initially fighting one another until Robin decided to try being nice. Despite this, they slowly warm up to one another, after a phase of uneasiness on Starfire’s side. It’s far from rushed, which makes the conclusion all the even more rewarding. In “Trouble in Tokyo,” the series’ ending, the pair finally became official. Robin is intense and disciplined, while Starfire is open and warm, opposite traits that complement each other wonderfully. Their chemistry is undeniable, easily being one of the best slow-burn romances in cartoons.

#8: Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy

“Harley Quinn” (2019-)

Harley and the Joker are the most famous DC couple, but the real fans know Poison Ivy is the better partner for Harley. In “The Animated Series,” they had a wonderful friendship, with Ivy regularly helping Harley when the Joker was a bit too much. Their opposite personalities balance each other out, with Ivy being calm and collected, then Harley being pure chaos. Unlike the Joker, Ivy values and respects Harley. Their relationship is a huge part of what makes the “Harley Quinn” series so enjoyable. It’s also made countless fans beyond happy for finally matching the two.

#7: Todd Chavez & Maude

“BoJack Horseman” (2014-20)

Despite being an overwhelmingly depressing show, it’s got its fair share of heart-melting couples. Guy and Diane are a pure delight to watch, while Carolyn and Judah turned our hearts molten. If we had to settle for one, that has to be Todd and Maude, the reigning champions of TV ace couples. Todd is always engaging in the wackiest schemes, bewildering the majority of characters. Maude is the exception to this rule, and obviously Mr. Peanutbutter, but that’s not a romance. It feels so great to watch them on screen. We like to imagine they’re living a life of constant wacky schemes after the show’s conclusion.

#6: Kim Possible & Ron Stoppable

“Kim Possible” (2002-07)

The pair became best friends in preschool, and later fell in love, officially dating each other by Senior year. Personality-wise, they’re total opposites, as reflected by their last names “Stoppable” and “Possible.” This makes us wonder if they ever got married, would Kim become “Kim Stoppable?” These differences only make them closer, with Kim’s confidence being balanced by Ron’s laid-back attitude. This is enhanced by their immense faithfulness. Even in the most extreme and dangerous scenarios, their loyalty rarely falters. By the end, Kim learns love isn’t about finding a perfect person. It’s about finding someone who wholly and truly supports and understands you.

#5: Phineas Flynn & Isabella Garcia-Shapiro

“Phineas and Ferb” (2007-15)

The romance between Phineas and Isabella is adorable, and relatable to anyone who had a childhood crush. Her crush is one of the most endearing in a cartoon, lasting the length of the longest summer ever. She’s always ready to support Phineas, no matter how wild his inventions are. Phineas values her back, but always as a friend, with all of Isabella’s hints amusingly going straight over his head. In “Act Your Age”, we get to see the pair finally confess their feelings. The slow burn is part of what made them special, reflecting the struggles of young romance.

#4: Ruby & Sapphire

“Steven Universe” (2013-19)

The relationship between Steven and Connie is important. They certainly have a lot of chemistry, but not to the same level as Ruby and Sapphire. Their relationship is the foundation for Garnet, the fusion of them both. They’re so in sync they spend most of their time fused as Garnet, meaning they’re more than just a couple. They’re two halves of the same person. The two are opposites, with Ruby being literally full of fire, while Sapphire is totally cool. The episode “The Answer” sheds a lot of light on their romance, revealing it to be revolutionary in their reality. The episode was so good, it was nominated for an Emmy and later turned into a children’s book.

#3: Princess Bubblegum & Marceline

“Adventure Time” (2010-18)

You wouldn’t expect a thousand-year-old vampire queen and a slightly deranged candy dictator to be a good couple, but it turns out they’re perfect for each other. Their relationship begins tense, on account of their complicated past. As the show goes on, they rediscover the feelings they had for one another. By the end of the show, it’s tough to avoid shouting “get together” every time they’re on screen. Once again, their personalities are massively contrasting. Their \ kiss in “Come Along With Me” was a landmark moment for LGBTQ+ representation, solidifing them as “Adventure Times”’s best couple.

#2: Aang & Katara

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” (2005-08)

We have to give credit to Korra and Asami for being such a pioneering couple. We also can’t fail to mention Sokka and Suki, an unexpected yet delightfully wholesome match. Neither couple can beat the chemistry shared between Aang and Katara. From the moment they meet, you can feel the sparks flying. Throughout the series, viewers will grow increasingly desperate to see them fall for one another. Unfortunately, they’re usually busy saving the world. This makes it so much more rewarding when they finally fall for one another. “The Legend of Korra” thankfully confirmed it wasn’t just a childhood crush, but a lifelong, meaningful relationship.

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Various (1928-)

The Oldest Cartoon Couple

Gumball Watterson & Penny Fitzgerald, “The Amazing World of Gumball” (2011-)

Gumball Fans’ Favorite Romance

Adora & Catra, “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power” (2018-20)

First Childhood Friends, Then Enemies, Fans Were Amazed When They Finally Settled Down

Caitlyn Kiramman & Vi, “Arcane” (2021-24)

Predicted By the Gamers, Confirmed By the Show

Luz Noceda & Amity Blight, “The Owl House” (2020-23)

Potentially Disney Channel’s Most Famous Couple

#1: Homer & Marge Simpson

“The Simpsons” (1989-)

This pair has been on our TV screens for more than 30 seasons. They’re completely entrenched in modern pop culture globally. Homer is a force of constant chaos. Marge is the ballast that keeps him grounded. Despite the immense stress of being married to Homer, Marge always stays by his side, revealing a love that can withstand anything. Their marriage is far from perfect, but that’s what makes it feel so real, despite the wacky hair and bright yellow skin. They’re a timeless match, with a chemistry that’s been admired by generations of viewers. It’s hardly contentious to call them the best cartoon sitcom couple.
