Top 10 Celebrities Who Are Infamously IMPOSSIBLE to Interview

Welcome to MsMojo, and today were counting down our picks for the most difficult, quiet, and, in some cases, toxic celebrity interviewees.

#10: Joaquin Phoenix

On the Late Show with David Letterman, this Oscar winner became infamous for an elaborate prank. This toxic interview turned out to be a stunt, but it was definitely awkward for everybody involved. Phoenix went back to apologize and seemed slightly shaken up about it. Regardless of that performance, the actor hasnt stopped making interviews strange. Hes more shy and reserved, bringing a much different energy to shows hosted by the likes of Jimmy Kimmel. Hes also attempted jokes on those programs, with some bits falling flat altogether. The Joker star even interrupted Kimmel with a random thought about Amy Poehler. Like some of his incredible films, these segments often throw you for a loop.

#9: Hugh Grant

This rom-com star can be a witty and enjoyable presence on screen, but that doesnt always translate into real life. Hes been known to occasionally stumble through questions. During a red carpet interview with Ashley Graham, he showed off his grouchier side. He doesnt care enough to play along with simple questions. Considering his past scandals, we can understand why he might be squeamish around the press. Grant is so blunt sometimes that hes unintentionally funny. Hes had his share of good talk show appearances, but he doesnt always like to put on the mask. This kind of behavior has even made hosts like Graham Norton want to snap at him.

#8: Kanye West

Needless to say, this rapper comes off as a bit self-centered. Hes had his fair share of strange interviews that include a weird spot on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Infamously, Kanye hijacked the show and went on an extended rant. Its clear that the artist doesnt mind talking over people or interrupting them. His selfishness can become unbearable, forcing people to either shut him down or watch in stunned silence. Theres also been a chaotic interview at TMZ which prompted some of his worst opinions. All of this adds up to an artist that speaks without a filter, damaging his reputation with each new controversial statement.

#7: Bob Dylan

Once you think you have him nailed down, Bob Dylan slips out of your grasp. The iconic folk singer has spent years fielding and evading questions, but he doesnt seem to find interviews all that essential. Documentaries have captured him in a variety of mysterious eras. Hes remained a musical enigma, avoiding direct explanations of himself. You could argue that he wants his music to speak for itself. Its rare to find Dylan doing many interviews at all, largely preferring to record or tour instead. This doesnt stop people from speculating or bothering him for answers.

#6: Oliver Reed

This British actor drew both critical notice and the occasional controversy. Oliver Reed came from a different era, with strong opinions and a penchant for drinking. His love of alcohol didnt help on talk shows, with audiences and hosts glimpsing his loose style. Its not entirely certain if you can just blame the drinking either. He didnt seem to care about how he came across on a show like Late Night with David Letterman, for example. In one interview, his comments on women inspired Shelley Winters to dump water on him. The awkward moment was yet another time that Reed pushed the envelope for the worse.

#5: Robert De Niro

Over the years, Robert De Niro has proven to be a much more quiet interviewee. Some interviewers have noted that, while others have tried to move past it. De Niro has shown hell occasionally liven up, but its clear that hes less comfortable in a talk show setting. Stephen Colbert has acknowledged the actors behavior and even plays off of it. Defying some critics, De Niro does speak up about politics sometimes. It can be hard to tell what youll get from him. But more likely than not, youll see the more shy and anti-interview persona come out.

#4: Lou Reed

As one of the architects of alternative music, Lou Reed was a legend in the music industry. He also had something of a reputation when it came to the press. Members of the media didnt love the musicians behavior, as the artist would sometimes offer up harsh clapbacks and even turn into the interviewer himself. Reed seemed to be fighting back in the days before the world became littered with celebrity media coverage in pop culture. If he didnt like a question, he didnt mind letting his opinions out. Some mightve called him a jerk, but others mightve found his defiant actions admirable.

#3: Tommy Lee Jones

With his gruff personality, Tommy Lee Jones didnt have time to suffer fools gladly. Hes a talented and intelligent man from Texas that speaks his truth. Not to mention, he made his cold stares something of an iconic image on film and at the Golden Globes. Jones can be an abrasive figure that seems to avoid playing games with television personalities like Jimmy Fallon. Outside the movies, hes conducted himself as a man thats not interested in the pageantry of press junkets. Some people could find this refreshing, while others might think being so blunt is impolite.

#2: Marlon Brando

Even as one of the most influential performers ever, Marlon Brando didnt always give interviews. He became something of an enigmatic figure, avoiding the spotlight and only coming out for rare appearances. He famously sat down with Connie Chung in an interview thats full of bizarre moments. Brando is not interested in playing the game or giving great insights into his craft. When he linked up with Larry King, he proved to be even more mischievous. He always seemed more interested in real-world issues than pontificating about art. People might see self-importance, but theyd also be pleasantly surprised by his candor.

#1: Andy Kaufman

He was a genius, an enigma, and one of the most unique minds of his day. This also made Andy Kaufman one of the most evasive interviews ever. It was usually hard to tell where his comedy ended and his real personality began. On David Lettermans shows, the actor rode the line between performance art and deeply uncomfortable truth. Kaufman was skilled at making it look real, turning public appearances into chaotic episodes. Letterman and other hosts could barely talk to him, eventually letting the actor take over. The mysterious man put up such a good front that he could hijack an interview, suck the energy out of the room, and even upend the entire format.
