Top 10 Celebrities Who Love to Surf in Their Spare Time
These celebs are pretty good at surfing the waves! When they're not busy at their day jobs, you can catch them on their surfboard! Helen Hunt, Minnie Driver, Jason Mraz, Eddie Vedder, Gisele Bundchen, Cameron Diaz, Matthew McConaughey and Chris Hemsworth are some of the celebs on our list!
#10: Helen Hunt
If you ask this movie star what the secret to aging gracefully is, she’ll tell you it’s surfing. The actress picked up the sport relatively late and says she struggled to begin. But once she did, it turned into a full-fledged hobby; one she took to the big screen back in the 2014 when she wrote, directed and starred in the movie “Ride.” While she admits she doesn’t hit the surf every day, she has said that she did it while “100 months pregnant,” which is pretty impressive if you ask us. But, she’s also talked a lot about peeing in her wetsuit. A little TMI, Helen...
#9: Minnie Driver
Minnie Driver may be most known for being an Academy-Award nominated actress, but she’s also a singer-songwriter – and an athlete! She’s been especially vocal about her love for surfing, having been quoted saying that she considers the sport, along with yoga, her religion. And, based on the photos we’ve seen of her taking on the waves in Malibu, California, it’s pretty obvious she’s got the skills. The English actress proved herself to be a natural in the water when she was spotted in Surf City in 2006, when she joined the Surfrider Foundation Celebrity Surf Jam to help raise awareness for coastal environments.
#8: Jason Mraz
A quick look at any of this singer’s music videos and you’d think he’d been surfing his whole life. But the “I’m Yours” hitmaker says he only started when he was 28 and now, it’s one of his passions. Mraz has actually compared hitting the waves to making music, saying that he tries to bring the carefree approach he has to surfing to his tunes. In fact, he’s such a big fan of the sport that he was named the Surfing Industry Manufacturers Association's Humanitarian of the Year in 2010. The next year, he then participated in an event by LifeRollsOn.org, which helps people with spinal cord injuries surf again. What a guy.
#7: Eddie Vedder
He’s one of the most famous frontmen in alternative rock, but he can also hold his own in the surf. This all-round, talented musician counts other well-known surfers like Kelly Slater, Laird Hamilton and Jack Johnson as some of his closest friends, so it’s no wonder he’s a fan of hitting the waves. So does Vedder just zone out while he’s surfing? No, he actually uses his time on the water to write music. He elaborated in an interview with Surfline, saying “You hear something you're working on and play the instrumental in your head. Then you go out and actually formulate it -- and might have the whole thing written when you come in.”
#6: Ashley Greene
It’s not all fun and games when you hit the waves – just ask Ashley Greene. The Twilight actress is known for being a badass vampire, but she’s human IRL and that means she can get hurt. In 2013, she shared a picture to Instagram that showed off her “war wounds from surfing” during a trip to Indonesia. However, she ended the post with “hashtag worth it”, so it doesn’t sound like she’ll stop surfing anytime soon. She wasn’t alone in the ocean that time either: Greene was joined by fellow actress and surf enthusiast Vanessa Hudgens as part of Oakley's Bali Pro/Learn to Surf Event.
#5: Cameron Diaz
2003 was a year of ups and downs for this movie star: she was highest paid actress in Hollywood, but she also broke her nose in a surfing accident, reportedly shattering it in 20 places. Here’s the story: she was on a family holiday in Hawaii to celebrate her 31st birthday when she was hit in the face by another surfer’s board. She eventually went under the knife to fix the break in 2006, and has also since rectified her love of the ocean, even being spotted surfing with the likes of World Champion Kelly Slater. Meanwhile, she showed off her talents in “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” by performing some of her own surfing stunts.
#4: Gisele Bündchen
We’re used to seeing this supermodel heading down the catwalk, the red carpet or even strutting the entire length of a stadium for the Rio Olympics Opening Ceremony, but she’s also a regular in the ocean. In fact, she’s such a fan the sport that the Brazilian beauty was featured in an ad that combined surfing with the high-end fashion label Chanel in 2014. Okay, she didn’t do her own stunts but did know how to properly hold the board! She’s also often seen surfing while on vacation with her husband Tom Brady, and has even been caught taking some time to ride the waves in Costa Rica.
#3: Lady Gaga
You may’ve seen her crowd surfing, but this singer also surfs the waves in her downtime. In 2011, the pop star took a holiday in Mexico where she learned the sport, and even managed to stand up after only a few goes. Gaga has also helped us answer the question: what could be more fun than surfing on your own? Well, by the looks of it, it’s surfing with your dog. In 2014, Lady Gaga took her French Bulldog out on her board, posting a photo on Instagram with the caption, ‘Me and my Piggy went surfing this morning’. It was such a big day for the pup that he needed a nap on the beach afterwards.
#2: Matthew McConaughey
He’s one of the most laidback guys in Hollywood, so it’s no wonder Matt was cast to play a surfer in the 2008 comedy, “Surfer, Dude.” Although a stunt double did the surfing in the film, that’s when the A-lister first started hitting the waves, and now he’s hooked, telling GrindTV that “It might sound corny, but I’ve never had a bad time surfing. I love being out there, I love the culture, I love being outside—I just love it, man.” Of course, that didn’t stop him from getting into a bit of surfing-related controversy in 2008, when his fellow surfers fought with paparazzi that were trying to take photos of the star.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
- Adam Sandler
- Rihanna
- Lindsay Lohan
#1: Chris Hemsworth
As the character Thor, he may have power over the weather, but in real life, Chris Hemsworth’s powers are definitely in the ocean. In 2017, the Aussie movie star posted a video to Instagram after a trip down under to the coastal town of Byron Bay, with the hashtag ‘World’s Longest Barrel’. While that was obviously an exaggeration, you have to admit that he does do a very long barrel… and just when you think he’s been taken by a wave, he emerges – and is still standing. Meanwhile, Hemsworth has also been spotted surfing while on vacation with Kelly Slater in Fiji. Hang ten, dude!
