Top 10 Coolest Tech of 2023
#10: Timekettle Translation Earbuds
If you can speak 40 different languages, then hats off to you. If you can’t, these M3 earbuds from Timekettle can help you out. Clever translation tech has been around for a while now, but these earbuds are designed for culture-hungry travelers who want to communicate seamlessly and instantly with those who speak another language. Use Listen Mode to translate a speaker’s language right into your ear, or use Speaker Mode to translate your own language into theirs. These things are not only convenient, but they can genuinely help you better immerse yourself in culture when traveling the world. You no longer have to fear causing an international incident when asking where the nearest restroom is.
#9: Aromajoin Aroma Shooter
Remember Smell-O-Vision? It was a concept that was difficult to wrap your nostrils around, right? I mean, imagine being able to smell the movie or tv show you’re watching. Well, Aromajoin has made this a reality, using what it calls Aroma Shooters, small devices that emit various different smells. And it plans to release a neck-wearable device that incorporates these Aroma Shooters, and can be worn while watching videos. This smell-emitting necklace can house up to six cartridges, each offering a different scent - from fresh fruit to a smoking gun. And you can program these smells to be emitted during specific visual and musical cues of whatever video you’re watching too. Want to smell the salty icy seas of “Dunkirk”? Or perhaps the mountainous musk of The Overlook Hotel? Well, now you can - just be sure to pack some snowshoes and a trike for that last one.
#8: Dyson Zone Headphones
The pandemic made us all rethink our hygiene regimes. And world renowned vacuum brand Dyson also went back to the drawing board to incorporate air purifying tech in a pair of headphones no less. Yes, these things offer impressive sound quality, but the reason these headphones are on this list is because of their detachable visor that purifies the air you breathe. Two electrostatic carbon filters help remove pollutants and blow fresher air into your mouth and nose. And you can even track your air quality stats through the Dyson app. Will you look a bit like Bane from “Batman”? Sure. But if you’re frequently traveling through smoggy cities and stuffy underground train stations, the Dyson Zone headphones might make a surprising amount of sense.
#7: Apple Watch Ultra 2
We know, big whoop, everyone has an Apple Watch, right? Well, the Apple Watch Ultra range is a little bit different, because it’s the tech brand’s first crack at making a tough, go-anywhere version of the wearable - and that’s pretty exciting. It may not be Casio G-Shock tough, but the Ultra 2 comes with sapphire glass, a titanium frame and 100m of water resistance - so it will handle pretty much anything you throw at it. The Ultra 2 also has the longest battery life of any Apple Watch to date, with 36 hours from a single charge. And when it comes to traversing the outdoors, its bigger and brighter display, quick launch Action Button and built-in emergency siren will help give peace of mind to budding survivalists.
#6: GoCycle G4
Electric bikes have been through many different iterations, each offering an eco-conscious way to traverse a city. But unfortunately, they’re usually just as bulky as regular road bikes. The GoCycle G4 however, isn’t. This is a foldable bike. Much like the classic Brompton bikes of old - the GoCycle G4 is designed to be easier to take on-and-off public transport and store at home or in the office. And, of course, there’s an electric motor at its core, offering up to 40 miles of range. You even get a USB port so you can charge your phone on the go. It may not be quite as cool and futuristic-looking as a light cycle from “Tron”, but it’s certainly a step up from the traditional push bike.
#5: Insta360 X3
The go-to for action cams used to be GoPro. But the tides are changing, with tons of brands introducing some seriously impressive 360 cameras - including GoPro themselves. But Insta360 gets our nod for this list, with the Insta360 X3 representing one of the best action cameras money can buy. The creative possibilities with this camera are seemingly endless, thanks in part to its invisible selfie stick feature. Its Flowstate stabilization, various shooting modes, up to 5.7k resolution and the ability to reframe and choose your favorite shot after the fact, all make this a must have for casual travelers and passionate vloggers. Being able to achieve third person-like tracking shots by yourself, is really next level stuff.
#4: Lululemon Studio Mirror
It’s easy to drown in the sheer amount of home gym equipment out there. But this smart mirror from Lululemon kind of rewrites the book on home workouts. First off, it’s not a bulky piece of kit that takes up a ton of space. It’s a mirror. And it looks awesome. It’s effectively designed to be a one-stop shop for workout sessions of any kind and instant personal trainer access, with over 10,000 different fitness classes available at your fingertips. And you can pay a little extra and have live personal trainer sessions too, with the mirror allowing you to communicate back and forth. We know what you’re thinking - where was this during covid right?
#3: Meta Quest 3
Virtual reality gaming is far from a new concept, but certain gaming systems pull it off more effectively than others - and we think the Meta Quest Pro is the one to go for if you want a no-nonsense, immersive VR experience that doesn’t rely on an external gaming system like a PC. The Quest 3 offers wireless VR, an expansive library of downloadable games, an impressive Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor and improved peripheral visuals thanks to its pancake lenses. It’s a solid standalone system that will suit both hardcore gamers, and those who want to explore the world from the comfort of their own living room.
#2: Withings U-Scan
Now for something remarkably different - a wearable for your toilet that’s capable of detecting, measuring and reporting on your current health status, by reading your urine sample. This small, pebble-like device features built-in cartridges and it’s designed to sit inside your toilet boll. It is able to measure 100 different parameters of your urine in order to deliver health stats. We’re already used to wearing smart watches that help advise on health-related lifestyle changes, but the Withings U-Scan takes things a step further and turns each visit to the bathroom into a quick health check.
#1: ChatGPT
AI has rapidly become a part of everyday life, and with some of the AI tech available, you’ve really got to see it to believe it. Although there’s tons of handheld, purchasable AI devices out there, we wanted to include a relatively simple product that you can access anywhere - ChatGPT. Developed by OpenAI, this nifty search engine-like chatbot is capable of scouring the internet and answering a whole bunch of questions, with detailed, essay-like answers, in a matter of seconds. ChatGPT represents a quick glimpse into the advanced AI tech that’s yet to come, and how it can be easily integrated into our everyday lives, for the better. Hopefully it’s friendly…
