Top 10 Couples That Started on Dancing with the Stars
VOICE OVER: Emily Brayton WRITTEN BY: Tal Fox
These couples started on "Dancing with the Stars," dancing into our hearts in the process. Our countdown includes Emma Slater & Sasha Farber, Robert Herjavec & Kym Johnson, Alexis Ren & Alan Bersten, and more!

#10: Chrishell Stause & Keo Motsepe

After Gleb Savchenko and his wife announced their separation, viewers wondered if things had heated up with his season 29 partner Chrishell Stause. What we didn’t know was that behind-the-scenes, sparks had been flying between the “Selling Sunset” star and another professional dancer. In December 2020, Chrishell and Keo went public with their relationship, sharing a cute photo on Instagram. However, less than three months later, it was all over. Following reports of their split, where Motsepe was described as heartbroken, Stause took to Instagram Stories to tell her side of the breakup.

#9: Alexis Ren & Alan Bersten

While many couples try to keep their budding showmance away from the cameras, this duo decided to address theirs head-on. During the week six video package, model and social media personality Alexis Ren confessed that she’d developed feelings for her dance partner. The following week, Bersten admitted that he reciprocated those feelings. Still, neither wanted anything to distract their focus from the competition. They finished fourth overall but Ren said that she felt like she’d won and they were looking forward to exploring their relationship outside of the show. However, the relationship only lasted a few weeks, with their busy schedules keeping them apart.

#8: Sabrina Bryan & Mark Ballas

Viewers first speculated that Cupid’s arrow had struck when Ballas called his partner “baby” on air. But it wasn’t until after their shock elimination in week six that the couple decided to see if they sizzled as much off the dance floor as they did on it. While they were dating, Bryan flew to India to film “Cheetah Girls: One World” and reportedly she and Ballas Skyped every day. Bryan even supported Ballas and figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi from the audience in season six. Unfortunately, though, Bryan’s schedule proved to be too busy, and after a few months, they broke up.

#7: Shannon Elizabeth & Derek Hough

This duo met when they were partnered up for the show’s sixth season. Anyone who watched them could clearly see that their chemistry was on fire. So, it was hardly surprising when they became an item after their elimination in week seven. In fact, there were so many sparks flying around that it ignited a rumor that the pair had gotten engaged in secret. The relationship lasted for over a year but ended on good terms. Together, they released joint Tweets announcing that they had gone their separate ways but would continue to be in each other’s lives as friends.

#6: Matthew Lawrence & Cheryl Burke

Unlike the other pairs on our list, only one-half of this couple actually featured on the show. Burke met her now-husband when his brother, Joey Lawrence, was a contestant during season three. They first dated in 2007 but called it quits after about a year. Approximately a decade later they rekindled the relationship, with Burke telling “People TV’s Chatter” that they both had a renewed “commitment” to making it work. Lawrence said that the friendship at the core of their relationship was the key to their bond. They got engaged in Laguna Beach in 2018 and in 2019 tied the knot.

#5: Emma Slater & Sasha Farber

When this duo joined the cast of “Burn the Floor”, their instant chemistry developed into friendship. It was only two years later, after they joined the televised dance contest, that their friendship blossomed into something more. Although they briefly broke up, Sasha confessed that he knew Emma was the one after only “three or four months”. In 2016, during a live episode, the pair danced a beautiful contemporary routine that ended in a surprise proposal. They walked down the aisle in 2018, with several of their dance buddies serving as part of the wedding party. Slater’s season 17 partner, Bill Engvall, even officiated the ceremony.

#4: Nikki Bella & Artem Chigvinstev

When the “Total Bellas” star joined season 25, she was engaged to John Cena. She divulged that at the time that she didn’t have feelings for her dance partner, but that they shared an “emotional connection”. They’d even talked about Artem teaching them a few moves for the wedding. However, after the engagement was called off in July 2018, rumors emerged that she had reunited with Chigvinstev. It wasn’t until March 2019 that they finally confirmed that they were together. Then in January 2020, Bella revealed that they were engaged and, in July the same year, they welcomed a baby boy into their family.

#3: Jenna Johnson & Val Chmerkovskiy

Jenna joined the show in 2014 as a troupe member. The following year, she and Val sparked romance rumors when they were spotted cozying up during rehearsals. Still, the pair managed to keep their relationship under wraps until they broke up a few months later. During this time, Val briefly dated season 23 contestant, Amber Rose. But ultimately Jenna was the one for him. It was her closeness with her family that confirmed to Val that this was the woman he wanted to spend his life with. He popped the question in 2018 while vacationing in Italy and, in April 2019, they tied the knot.

#2: Robert Herjavec & Kym Johnson

The “nice” shark met his future bride in 2015 during season 20. The pair reportedly hit it off during rehearsals and were already very close by the season’s premiere. They shared a special bond both on and off of the dance floor, using their chemistry to sail through to week eight. Herjavec told “People”: “from the moment I met her, I loved hanging out with her”. They continued to date even after they were eliminated from the show. The couple got engaged soon after and were married by July 2016. Then, in April 2018, they introduced the world to their newborn twins.

#1: Peta Murgatroyd & Maksim Chmerkovskiy

The dancers first met during the 2009 Broadway run of “Burn The Floor”. However, it was only after they joined “Dancing with the Stars” that their attraction developed. But at the time Maks was engaged to Karina Smirnoff and Peta was dating Damian Whitewood. In 2012, both finally single, they started dating. They broke up after 10 months, a decision that Maks very quickly regretted. In 2015, they rekindled the relationship and he proposed after a performance of their show, “Sway”. 2017 was a very special year for them as they welcomed their son in January, and in July finally said their “I Dos”.
