Top 10 Craziest Celebrity Homes

Top 10 Craziest Celebrity Homes
VOICE OVER: Phoebe de Jeu WRITTEN BY: Nathan Sharp
Home sweet home, indeed! For this list, we'll be looking at the most outlandish and extravagant houses owned by prominent celebrities. Our countdown includes Nicolas Cage, LeBron James, Elton John, and more!

#10: Nicolas Cage

Built in the 1940s, Nicolas Cage’s former mansion in Bel Air is a haven for antique home lovers. The house is like something you’d see in an extravagant period piece, popping with period furnishings, bright colors, and winding staircases. It reportedly contained nine bathrooms, five fireplaces, a wine cellar, 300 framed comic book covers, and even a library and 35-seat theater. The exterior is also quite a sight, complete with a massive backyard pool and ivy-covered red brick. Cage reportedly purchased the house for $6.5 million back in 1998 and sold it in 2010 for $10.5 million.

#9: Taylor Swift

In 2015, pop legend Taylor Swift purchased a Beverly Hills house for $25 million that was once owned by Samuel Goldwyn. The mansion is Georgian Revival and measures in at nearly 11,000 square feet. It contains seven bedrooms, ten bathrooms, a sweeping foyer staircase, a tennis court, and a screening room. The house is also particularly old fashioned, complete with antique desks, the original hardwood floors, a wood-burning fireplace, and a triple set of French doors. Swift still owns the home, and after completing some significant renovations, it was made into a National Historic Landmark in 2017.

#8: Naomi Campbell

From 2008 to 2013, Naomi Campbell dated Russian businessman and billionaire Vladislav Doronin. In 2011, Doronin purchased a particularly unique house for Campbell’s 41st birthday. Located on Cleopatra Island in Turkey’s Gulf of Gökova, the house is dome-shaped and looks like the Egyptian Eye of Horus from the air. The home is completely self-sustainable, complete with a geothermal system and photovoltaic panels. The real name of Cleopatra Island is Sedir Island, but it’s said that Mark Antony and Cleopatra used to swim on its exceptional beaches and that Antony personally had the sand shipped from Egypt. Regardless of that story’s veracity, there’s no denying the exceptional originality of the Eye of Horus house.

#7: Elton John

This iconic English singer can’t do anything without making it extravagant, and that goes for his living arrangements. Located in Beverly Hills, John’s house was reportedly built in the 1960s and is a true art lovers’ dream. The decor includes a pink-lacquer cocktail table, neon word signs, custom tables and chairs, and tons of unique vintage art. The house measures in at 5,000 square feet and features unique mid-century architecture, which John’s husband David Furnish proudly says “is quintessential L.A.” It’s just one of the couple’s many, many houses, as they also own property in places like Atlanta, France, and Italy.

#6: LeBron James

Throughout much of the 2010s, LeBron James alternated between Miami and Cleveland. Beginning in 2018, James began playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, and with a new team came a new house. In 2020, James purchased a new Beverly Hills mansion for a whopping $37 million. The estate spans over two acres and is built in a Meditteranean style. Former residents include Howard Hughes and Katharine Hepburn. It contains a screening room with a wood burning fireplace, a carpeted library, an indoor-outdoor living room, a tennis court, and a palm tree-lined motor court leading up to the house. Not to mention the magnificent view of downtown Los Angeles. This is what four NBA championships buys you.

#5: Lenny Kravitz

This musician and four-time Grammy winner told Architectural Digest, “I’m done with the hustle and bustle. I’m going to be a farmer.” So he purchased a farm compound in Brazil. The plantation dates back to the 18th century, where it used to produce coffee. Located near Rio, the plantation covers 1,000 acres and consists of numerous separate farmhouses, buildings, and amenities. These include a gym, a soccer field, a recording studio, and an area specifically dedicated to barbecuing. The property also contains acres upon acres of natural beauty, providing Kravitz with an expansive and serene place to unwind.

#4: Beyoncé & Jay-Z

It’s really no surprise that Beyoncé and Jay-Z own one of the most luxurious homes in the entire world. Back in August of 2017, the couple purchased a Bel Air mansion for an unbelievable $90 million. In fact, this home purchase was reportedly the largest single transaction in Los Angeles throughout 2017. Luckily for them, that $90 million is on full display. The home comes equipped with a full basketball court, a 15 car garage, a full spa, four outdoor pools (including an infinity pool), a movie theater, and even staff quarters. It’s more of a “complex” than a house, but that’s what one would expect with a near $100 million price tag.

#3: Kim Kardashian & Kanye West

This entire family is living lavishly, including Kylie Jenner, who has lived in numerous extravagant mansions throughout Los Angeles. But of course it’s Kim and Kanye’s house that draws the most attention. The couple purchased a mansion back in 2014 for $20 million, and it contains all the fixings a rich and famous couple could ever hope for. These include five walk-in fridges, two kitchens, a TV that emerges from the floor, and massive walk-in closets. The home is also notable for being weirdly minimalist, complete with a near-empty foyer, empty, church-like hallways, plain tables, pale hardwood floors, and an all-white color scheme. You can practically hear the echoes.

#2: Lady Gaga

Back in 2014, Lady Gaga purchased a beachside mansion in Malibu for a reported $22.5 million. Spanning six acres and just over 10,000 square feet, the old and rustic house comes equipped with a wine cellar, a movie theater, horse stables, and even a bowling alley from the 1960s. Perhaps most gorgeous are the views, as the house is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the gorgeous Santa Monica Mountains that run through Malibu. It’s certainly not the outrageous house we were expecting from Lady Gaga, but it’s a gorgeous piece of land and architecture nevertheless.

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

Mel Gibson

#1: Michael Jackson

The iconic pop artist owned what is perhaps the most famous celebrity property in the world. Located in Santa Barbara County near the Los Padres National Forest, Neverland Ranch was bought by Jackson in 1988. Spanning an area of 2,700 acres, the property contained three railroads, a petting zoo, and Jackson’s own private amusement park, complete with a Ferris wheel, a roller coaster, bumper cars, arcade games, and a carousel. Following Jackson’s death, the area was renamed Sycamore Valley Ranch and was put up for sale for $100 million. However, there was a significant lack of interest, and the property was eventually purchased in 2020 by one of Jackson’s family friends for $22 million.
