Top 10 Classic Hollywood Actresses of All Time

From the Golden Age of Hollywood to the heyday of modern cinema and through to the new millennium, these actresses captured the spirit of their generation. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 era defining actresses of all time. For this list, we’ve taken the top 4 actresses from our previous era defining lists and pitted them against each other in a new ranking. These actresses may have been active through various eras of cinema but enjoyed periods in their career when they were the most relevant of their peers and have come to represent a specific era in a significant way. Some of the actresses here may rank higher or lower than they did on their respective era list because there are entirely different criteria to consider when making an “all time” list as compared to an era specific list. The question is which actresses most defined their eras?

#10: Bette Davis

A prolific performer, Bette Davis notched up over one hundred film, theatre and TV credits within her career, and is quite rightly regarded as one of the best actresses to have ever lived! In terms of Academy Awards, she won two and was nominated for ten! The first person to reach double-figured nominations, Davis was never too far away from the top of her game! An actress who continued working into her old age, with no sense of hyperbole do we remember Davis as a legend!

#9: Emma Thompson

Also in:

Top 10 Emma Stone Performances

This is a lady that can make us laugh just as much as make us cry, just as much as make us do anything, really! Emma Thompson is one of the most impressive all-around actresses in history! “Much Ado About Nothing” proved she had very much of something, while “Howards End” won her an Academy Award! Not bad for a girl who started off her career goofing around in Cambridge University’s famous Footlights troupe! Not bad at all!

#8: Kate Winslet

Also in:

Top 10 Kate Winslet Performances

When she asked Leonardo DiCaprio to ‘draw her like one of his French girls’, not even Kate Winslet herself could’ve predicted the Titanic scale of success she’d go on to achieve! With “Little Children,” she became the youngest actress to achieve five Academy Award nominations, and with “The Reader” she became the youngest to receive six! Commercial success has run parallel to critical acclaim for Winslet, with “Flushed Away,” “The Holiday” and “Divergent” all dominating the box office! She’s the best of the British actresses and has been for some time!

#7: Ingrid Bergman

This Swedish superstar scooped almost every award possible within her career. Three Oscars, Four Golden Globes, Two Emmys and a Tony... Ingrid Bergman was simply brilliant! A notably conscientious performer, she is perhaps most well known for her role as Ilsa Lund in “Casablanca.”.. However, it was for “Gaslight,” “Anastasia” and “Murder on the Orient Express” that she secured Oscar wins! One of the most successful actresses of all time, she’s one of the best remembered and well respected as well!

#6: Jodie Foster

Next, an actress who’s been in the public eye for most of her life, and has deserved every ounce of admiration that’s been given her! 1976 was the year that really put Jodie Foster at the forefront of our minds, as she starred in “Bugsy Malone” and was Oscar nominated for her role as an underage prostitute in “Taxi Driver”! Since then, success has flown freely! Similarly intense parts in “The Accused” and “The Silence of the Lambs” have especially ensured that her mantelpiece is aching with awards!

#5: Sandra Bullock

Top 20 Greatest Sandra Bullock Movies

She was making movies long before the beginning of this century, but she just seems to have gotten even better with age! Sandra Bullock began the millennium with “Miss Congeniality,” before taking up a role in “Crash.” Next came “The Blind Side” for which she won an Oscar, then a switch to comedy for “The Heat,” then back to blockbusters for the Oscar-winning “Gravity.” Ironically, she’s managed to keep her feet on the ground despite an ever-increasing profile...

#4: Katharine Hepburn

Also in:

Top 10 Katharine Hepburn Performances

The actress to win more Academy Awards than Bergman is, Katharine Hepburn! An opinionated, independent and ambitious woman, Hepburn proved a leading lady in Hollywood for over sixty years! And her ambitions were fantastically fulfilled! With successes too lengthy to list effectively, Hepburn’s career is especially impressive because of the versatility that she demonstrated. Comedy, drama, history or mystery - Katharine could do them all!

#3: Julia Roberts

Also in:

Top 10 Julia Roberts Performances

The ‘chick-flick’ is perhaps one of cinema’s most prolific genres, and Julia Roberts is one of the major reasons for that! Roberts laid some serious foundations for the format during the ‘80s and ‘90s, and is rightly thought of as one of the most talented actresses of her generation! “Pretty Woman” has become an iconic film, and “Notting Hill” was richly received! More than just a rom-com-er though, her Academy Award for “Erin Brockovich” in 2000 was long, long overdue!

#2: Meryl Streep

Also in:

Top 10 Meryl Streep Performances

With three Academy Awards to her name and a record nineteen nominations, as well as eight Golden Globes and an incredible twenty-nine nominations, the statistics definitely do not lie! “Kramer vs. Kramer,” “Sophie’s Choice” and “The Iron Lady” brought the most success, but the Streep back-catalogue is full of filmic victories! An inspirational era definer, she’s one of the best the industry has ever seen! Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. - Cate Blanchett - Julianne Moore - Sigourney Weaver - Judi Dench

#1: Audrey Hepburn

Also in:

Top 10 Greatest Audrey Hepburn Performances

One of the most naturally beautiful women of all time, roles in “Roman Holiday,” “Charade,” “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “My Fair Lady” - among many others - have Hepburn placed at the top of this tree! With an accent at once sweet, sexy and sophisticated, and a manner at once commanding and cute, Audrey Hepburn was the perfect combination! Hollywood has seen no one like her since, nor are we ever likely to in the future! Do you agree with our list? Which actress do you think is the all time most iconic? Why you only consider the iconic status for cualifing how better an actress is????? that depends on how talented she is, so you are saying that a filmmaker is better than others just because he had more box office successes????? A country is more developed than others just because it has more money???? You know nothing
User
The legendary Bette Davis so low on the list???? For you she is nothing??? TALENTED???? OVIOUSLY, was the first person that recieved 10 oscar noms and first woman that recieved the Lifetime achievement from the AFI, does that tells you something????
