Top 10 Exact Moments Someone Overshared on Talk Shows
#10: Colonoscopy Parties
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” (2003-)
During this interview with Jimmy Kimmel, comedians Martin Short and Steve Martin reveal an unorthodox celebration. Apparently, they like to get together with friends the night before their colonoscopies. It’s both a strange and funny way to be proactive about your health. The revelation seems somewhat fitting for two of the funniest people around. There aren’t many graphic descriptions of the preparation, but it’s not any less gross to imagine the greater details. Let’s go ahead and call this the most surprising public service announcement of its kind. We didn’t really want to know about such a personal procedure, but ultimately we see it as another amusing story.
#9: Dr. Lendon Smith Takes Over
“The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” (1962-92)
Next to the likes of Richard Pryor and Tim Conway, Dr. Lendon Smith seems an odd choice for this episode of “The Tonight Show.” He doesn’t waste any time, immediately rambling. Catching Johnny Carson off guard, the doctor keeps talking until the host finally calls him out. Carson’s comic timing fails to stop Smith for good though, and inspires him to keep going on about all kinds of medical topics. Pryor and Conway laugh throughout as they watch Carson try to reclaim his show. You could call this oversharing, but you could also call this man nothing short of talkative.
#8: Stormy Daniels Picks a Mushroom
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” (2003-)
During this interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Stormy Daniels discusses her experience with Donald Trump. Kimmel steers her towards a specific direction that includes mushroom props — you get the idea. Compelled to choose a size, Daniels isn’t afraid to make an embarrassing selection. Kimmel looks extremely happy with himself, as if he’s receiving the kind of salacious news any comedian would pay to hear. The adult-film actress keeps the interview light as she reveals alleged details about her Trump encounter throughout. It’s rare to hear a talk-show guest talk about a now-former president so intimately, with Daniels giving audiences everywhere too much information.
#7: Kanye Turns the Interview into a Rant
“The Ellen DeGeneres Show” (2003-23)
While this talk show is usually all fun and dancing, Kanye West turned it into a platform for a personal rant. He was initially invited to open up about his ideas that could help humanity. West took the opportunity seriously, shutting out Ellen DeGeneres as a result. His endless monologue stuns the audience and covers a wide range of topics like the Oscars. Even DeGeneres falls quiet, watching the rapper run away with her show. It’s among the more awkward segments in the program’s history. No stranger to trying to steal the spotlight, West proves once again that he can’t help himself when given a platform.
#6: Greg Davies Leaves Microphone On
“The Graham Norton Show” (2007-)
Discussing his past as a teacher, Greg Davies reveals one of his most embarrassing moments ever. He recounts a humiliating day at work when he had a bathroom emergency, and realized he was wearing his mother’s underwear. Not only that, his play-by-play was picked up on a microphone for his students to hear. Listening to him walk the audience through it, we can tell he has a true gift for storytelling. All the while, fellow guest Ryan Gosling tries to hold it together as he hears more and more details. The end ultimately sends the couch into a laughing fit, as they come to realize Davies’ final mistake. It’s a masterclass in turning a low point into an entertaining anecdote.
#5: Robin Williams’ Honeymoon
“The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” (2005-14)
Entering into the wild world of Craig Ferguson’s talk show, Robin Williams is right at home. The two hit it off, as Williams details his recent honeymoon. He then catches Ferguson off guard with his use of one keyword. Hinting at how much he enjoyed his getaway with his new bride, Williams gives a description that causes the host to cringe. The latter criticizes the vocabulary choice, probably wincing at images dancing through his head. Both talented men roll with the punches and escape the topic before it becomes more awkward. If you don’t hate this moment, you might be laughing at the hilarious back and forth the confession creates.
#4: Tom Holland Spoiler Talk
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” (2003-)
This “Spider-Man” star has something of a history spoiling Marvel projects. For his “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” appearance, Tom Holland joins his castmates and can’t help himself. It’s even funnier that he spoils a plot detail about “Avengers: Infinity War” during a discussion about not giving away secrets. Holland’s wholesome energy makes the moment funny, even though Marvel agents were probably scrambling behind the scenes. Kimmel seems amazed that the actor went ahead and talked about the webslinger traveling to space. Robert Downey Jr. quickly jumps in to make a joke about the whole thing, making it extra special.
#3: Harmony Korine Describes a Shish Kebab Accident
“Late Show with David Letterman” (1993-2015)
As one of David Letterman’s most unique guests, Harmony Korine brings delight and strangeness to every interview. He doesn’t hesitate as he free-associates through wild anecdotes. This includes discussing how one time, a guy he knew had a mishap with a shish kebab. We probably didn’t need to know that! Whether or not it’s true though, you can’t help but take in Korine’s ability to say what comes to mind. The moment also allows for Letterman to swoop in with a reply. The guest doesn’t seem fazed, however, continuing on with many thoughts about life and work. He may overshare, but it certainly makes people want to watch.
#2: Nikki Glaser Describes Herself
“Conan” (2010-21)
If you know Glaser’s work, you know she has no problem talking about taboo subjects. This segment on “Conan” is no different as she describes one part of her body. The demonstration and description earn pretty funny reactions from O’Brien. Using suitcase imagery, Glaser proves that she can overshare in clever ways. It’s a hilarious moment from an interview that feels just like her standup routine. O’Brien’s amused discomfort, for its part, makes it extra memorable. It’s a lot, but if you’re familiar with Glaser’s performances at celebrity roasts, you’ll know she’s tamer here than usual.
#1: Patrick Stewart Gets Personal
“The Graham Norton Show” (2007-)
We’re not sure what it is about this show, but it prompts guests to reveal all kinds of personal information. Graham Norton ends up broaching an unexpected anatomical subject with legend Patrick Stewart. Stewart explains an argument he had with his wife on the topic, and explains how he asked his doctor to settle the debate. You’d be forgiven for laughing and looking as bewildered as fellow guest Hugh Jackman watching it unfold. Not thrown off though, Stewart tells the story with energy and good humor. He certainly wins the prize for picking the strangest time to discuss circumcision.
