#10: EDI UCAV “Stealth” (2005)

Standing for Extreme Deep Invader Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle, this flying machine is similar in design and purpose to a drone. And during the course of the film, EDI’s added as the fourth man on a team of three premiere pilots. Despite its speed, power and array of high-tech gadgets; this unmanned vehicle can’t always be trusted – especially if it’s hit by lightning, and its accuracy turns deadly. Unluckily, as the team soon finds out, EDI came equipped with just about everything but a moral compass.

You might know this one by its pet name, Archie – named after Archimedes, the pet owl that belonged to the wizard Merlin in “The Sword in the Stone” – but this flying machine is neither cute nor cuddly. It was invented by technical genius Dan Dreiberg, aka Nite Owl II, who’s most in his element when surrounded by tools. And this ship allows him to navigate both the air and sea with ease. Shaped like an owl’s head, the craft also has a flame thrower to keep enemies at bay.

This sequel drew in crowds who were anxious to see where – or, more precisely, when – Marty McFly and Doc Brown would end up next. With the flux capacitor now powered by the newly-installed Mr. Fusion – as opposed to the hard-to-acquire plutonium of the first film – the new-and-improved DeLorean time machine of Part 2 not only travels through time; it also travels through air. Now our intrepid time travelers can visit any era of Hill Valley unhampered by a silly restraint like gravity.

Studio Ghibli brought to animated life this beloved film adaptation of Diana Wynne Jones’ novel about a cursed young woman whose only hope is the infamous wizard, Howl, who seemingly lives in disrepair. But Howl’s castle is more than meets the eye: it’s a mash-up of random pieces that form one unique place of residence. With a face that resembles a frog and the legs of a chicken, it’s a walking, moving home that includes portals to several other locations and wings that allow it to fly.

From the brilliant mind of Ian Fleming came a novel about a car that can fly, float and flee danger when required. Named for the unusual sounds emitted by the engine, this flying machine masquerades as a regular old car, taking the Potts family on beachside picnics or wherever else the wind might blow them. Not only is this ride capable of riding the roads and soaring through clouds, it can also float on water. But we still think its flying capabilities are its coolest feature – whether with wings or without.

A blend of many real-life aircraft, this particular military flyer may be used on a planet other than Earth, but it’s not exactly out of this world – meaning we wouldn’t be super surprised to see something like this invented in the future. Shaped sort of like a giant flying insect, the Scorpions are the humans’ answer to the Na’vi people’s predatory Mountain Banshees – and they come fully loaded with radar and sonar capabilities, as well as some mega firepower that the machine’s lone pilot can fire off at will.

You want ominous? “HK” stands for “hunter-killer” – it doesn’t get deadlier than that. Developed for combat situations, these robotic machines do not resemble human beings in anyway, unlike the Terminator itself. Seeing humanity as a menace to their survival, Skynet created several variations of HKs throughout the franchise, including tanks, bombers and airstrike machines. The computer network then deployed these specific robots with their deadly tactics and unfeeling construction to help eradicate the human race from the air.

Originally created by Hank McCoy, aka Beast, this jet was a custom version of a Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird,” which was spy plane capable of upwards of Mach-3. And, it was the primary “normal” form of transportation this group of mutants used. The X-Jet also happened to be sponsored financially by the government, which in this case meant it was equipped with the best technology money could buy. Though it’s undergone upgrades and amendments have been made to its design; different iterations of the Blackbird have served the X-Men well for decades.

Yes, it does come in black, and it’s another mega-cool gadget from the mind of Lucius Fox. Batman’s latest toy was another creation made in Wayne Enterprises’ Applied Sciences division that had real-world applications for any rich playboys who may be moonlighting as vigilante superheroes. While all of Batman’s planes have been extra cool, this customized contraption was inspired by several real aircraft – see any similarities to a Harrier Jump Jet, anyone? It also possesses rocket launchers, machineguns, EMP cannons, floodlights and a two-person cockpit. But it is missing one vital component: autopilot – or is it??? According to comic lore, this aircraft – the headquarters for S.H.I.E.L.D. – was constructed by Stark Industries and designed by top scientists like Tony Stark, Mister Fantastic and Forge, the X-Man. Two runways extend across the ship; one allowing access to the rear hangar, the second appropriate for landings. This carrier is capable of navigating both the air and the water, while refractive panels underneath the craft can camouflage it from view. It can also withstand a lot of wear-and-tear, which is a good thing since it’s the world HQ of a badass intelligence/defense agency. Do you agree with our list?
