Top 10 Foods from Your Childhood You Forgot About
#10: Fruit Gushers
A moment of silence, please, for those children whose heads turned into fruit for the sake of a delicious fruit snack... but hey, that’s what happens when you bite into one of these wickedly radical treats. Proving the phrase, “It’s what’s inside that counts,” Gushers are known for the sweet fruit-flavored juices inside of them, the liquid erupting in your mouth like a... you know, gusher, hence the name. Admittedly, Gushers are still readily available, but there’s a severe lack of those rockin’ ‘90s commercials full of explosive fruit flavor, oddly shaped heads, and pun-filled announcers.
#9: P.B. Crisps
Who can ever forget Planters and, more important, the dapper Mr. Peanut with his top hat, monocle, and cane? While the company is famous for their peanuts, there were times when they introduced us to new, addictive products that either strayed away from peanuts or did something different with them. For example: these ridiculously delicious peanut-shaped treats. Made with a cookie coated outside and a creamy, peanut butter filling -- or chocolate, depending on what flavor you wanted -- it was damn near impossible to stop eating them... until they were discontinued. Seriously, why can’t we have nice things?
#8: Orbitz
Have you ever looked at a lava lamp and wondered, “What does the liquid inside taste like?” We’re sure that wasn’t the goal of the Clearly Canadian Beverage Corporation, but a fruit-flavored drink with floating balls inside of it? Yeah. Lava lamp. After hitting it big with their refreshing sparkling water, the company introduced a new drink that looked like it belonged in a futuristic movie. Is this what water would look like in the year 3000 and something? Orbitz came in a variety of flavors, and much like bubble tea, the orbs were edible. Who knows, maybe Orbitz was too rad for its time.
#7: Crispy M&Ms
Ah, M&Ms, the perfect, bite-sized candy that we eat by the handfuls. We love M&Ms so much that we have no problem seducing them into our cars and taking a big ol’ bite. No wonder the orange crispy M&M was so paranoid, after all, he was so scrumptious that even his own kind was trying to get a lick... or two. Unlike his candy brethren, Crispy had a wafer in the center to add that satisfying crunch to each bite. While the candy did make a comeback in 2015, it was in its hayday just as the world around it entered the new millennium.
#6: EZ Squirt Ketchup
Remember that time when Heinz tried to be hip? Maybe hip isn’t the right word, but they did try and fuel our creative juices by letting us use our ketchup as drawing tools. Our parents may have discouraged us from playing with our food, but Heinz was all for making dinner fun. With multi-colored ketchups, you could create fun designs on your burgers and fries instead of just, you know... eating them? Yeeeeah... we’re not sure how appetizing meals are when they look like they’ve been in an episode of Double Dare, but hey, it’s better than drawing on the garage.
#5: Oreo O's
Ah, who doesn’t love cookies? In fact, why settle for one cookie when you can eat an entire bowl full of them? Once upon a time, Oreos decided to follow in the footsteps of Cookie Crisp with their very own cereal. Yep, you could eat the Nabisco treat by the spoonful, and the world went nuts. Over the years, the cereal got an upgrade in flavor, with one iteration having real cream filling and an EXTREME version with that creamy center taking marshmallow form. Sadly, the cereal was discontinued in the US, but you can always have it shipped in from South Korea if you're really jonesing for a bowl.
#4: Squeezit
We know what you’re thinking: Squeezit is still around! While it’s true that squeeze bottle juice drinks are still out there, those spunky bottles that we’d squeeze the fun out of have been missing in action for quite some time. It wasn’t so much the juice that we remember, it’s the fact that each flavor not only had a personality, but a different design on their bottle to represent each character. Not that it mattered, we were gonna drink them no matter how hard they resisted - after all, how else were we gonna win the big game or get all that homework done?
#3: Planters Cheez Balls
Planters. Look. We reeeeeally need to have a talk. Stop releasing amazing snack foods if you're just going to discontinue them . ESPECIALLY if they are full of incredible cheese flavor. These cheese balls -- spelled with a z for maximum coolness -- were PHENOMENAL! Sure that canister was meant for sharing, but let’s be honest: anyone who got their hands on them kept those round, crispy treats all to themselves and happily licked the yellowish orange crumbs from their fingers. While other cheesy chips have come and gone , nothing has really captured the flavor of what Planters gave us oh so many years ago.
#2: McPizza
McDonald’s is no stranger to putting new food items on their menu, some of which cause mass hysteria for the few weeks they’re around. And then there’s... this. Once upon a time, the fast food chain tried their hands at serving family-sized pizzas that they’d bring out to the table for you. Later, they moved on to personal pizzas, but due to the longer cook times the golden arches decided to leave their pizza making days behind... though legend has it you can still get a fresh pie from a few franchise locations in the U.S. Have you had your slice today?
Before we get to our number one pick, let’s open our kitchen cabinets and snack on these honorable mentions:
Hubba Bubba Bubble Jug
Cinnamon Tic Tacs
Oatmeal Swirlers
#1: Pepsi Blue
Before the return of Crystal Pepsi, but after the original inception of Crystal Pepsi, we were all a little blue. This forgotten soda was made to compete against Vanilla Coke, and was probably the sugariest beverage you could consume in a single bottle. With a flavor reminiscent of liquefied cotton candy, it had a pretty spectacular celebrity backing along with a slew of fast-paced commercials... only to crash and burn after about a two-year run. We’re not sure if it’ll ever make a comeback (note that it’s still available in some Asian countries, but every time we see a new flavor of color-coded Mountain Dew, we find ourselves remembering that soda pop from yesteryear.
