Top 10 Forgotten Video Game Mascots

Kicking off our list is the mysterious amnesia stricken mining bot recruited by rebels during their struggle against the evil Milbots on Iron Star. A fast paced and compelling third-person shooter by Swingin’ Ape Studios, now owned by Blizzard Entertainment, we continue to hope that Glitch will one day make his return. Don’t let his childish façade fool you, he’s the most hardcore combat robot this side of the Autobots.

Before Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega had Alex as their unofficial mascot. A kid with monkey-like features, he wore a yellow and red jumpsuit and featured oversized hands. With the power to shatter rocks with his fists, he journeyed through miracle land in order to save his brother. Unlike Sega’s blue speed demon, Alex was all about the puzzles, strategic block smashing and pure difficulty.

This is the knight many best recognize as Fabio, back when game covers featured male models. The hero of an entire fantasy adventure trilogy, he is a warrior out to defeat the evil wizard Malkil. A warrior armed with the legendary Brightsword, he has the power to slay demons and defeat evil. In today’s world of large and detailed HD 3D gaming environments, Kuros would be right at home.

This young female warrior and raccoon are Natsume Mascots that haven’t been seen in ages. Heroes of this arcade-style scrolling shooter with a distinctly anime style, they quest to save the land from a mysterious figure, who has taken control of the land’s Goblins. It’s a shame Natsume hasn’t followed up on the addictive and atmospheric series, as we would love to see Pocky and Rocky’s personalities and friendship fleshed out in a modern do over.

This cheerful warrior is a sort of mythical Japanese Robin Hood with Ninja power. This Konami mascot with his blue hair and giant robot suit used to dazzle North American audiences with his many antics. A versatile Folkloric romp, Goemon does everything other mascots do, but with charm, humor and a laugh track. Today, the unusual hero remains a Japanese exclusive, with his last appearance being 1999’s “Goemon’s Great Adventure”.

This anthropomorphic Gecko with a TV addiction was transported to the Media Dimension behind the screen when he swallowed a transmitter, which he mistook for a fly. The unique mascot of Crystal Dynamics, he’s a couch potato who is best known for his wisecracking remarks, and love of pop-culture references. With consoles taken over by first person shooters, it would be great to have this joker back in his own platformer.

The star of his own run and gun platforming series, Jim is an Earthworm in a super space suit that allows him to fight evil. An iconic game icon, he hasn’t been seen since 1999 after appearing in “Earthworm Jim 3D”. We’d love to take Jim on another bizarre quest to rescue Princess What’s Her Name….no seriously, that’s her name.

This Capcom mascot isn’t forgotten per say, but definitely in need of a comeback. A character that once appeared in countless games, Capcom overdid it in a big way. Megaman X was a cool change, but he lost the attention of the mainstream when portables got drowned in Battle Network, Megaman Zero, Megaman Starforce and Megaman ZX. What Mega Man needs is a modern reboot and proper introduction to today’s gamers. Seriously, there hasn’t been a fresh 3D attempt since 2000’s “Mega Man Legends 2”.

We realize that Rare’s street-fighting Toads were rip offs of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but we don’t care! Appearing in five games, these anvil fisted amphibians ramped up the side scrolling difficulty, and provided for some rather memorable gameplay with the various weapons and vehicles available as you progressed. Shockingly, despite their popularity, Rash, Zitz and Pimple haven’t been seen since 1994.

Taking the top spot on our list is Rare’s squirrel who was initially intended to appeal to children with his appearances in “Diddy Kong Racing” and “Conker’s Pocket Tales”. However, he became a legend for his outrageously M-rated adventure on the N64, later rejigged for the Xbox. Greedy, alcoholic, mean and foul-mouthed, it’s a crime that this misleadingly cute little nutbar hasn’t been given an entire series.
