Top 10 Funniest TV Breakup Scenes
And you thought your breakup was bad. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Funniest TV Breakup Scenes.
For this list, we’re looking at the most hilarious breakup scenes on TV shows. While we may have been sad for the couples involved, these scenes were just too funny not to laugh at!
#10: Chandler Bing & Janice Hosenstein
“Friends” (1994-2004)
After both agreeing to break up with their respective partners, Chandler and Phoebe meet at the coffee shop to do the deed. While Phoebe’s breakup is over in the blink of an eye, Chandler has a much harder time summoning up the courage to end things with Janice. After downing a gallon of espresso, Chandler finally tells Janice it’s over. However, if we know anything about Janice, it’s that she has a flair for the dramatic. Soon the tears are flowing, and Chandler’s so wired he accidentally hits her. Don’t worry, Janice would get her revenge on the Friends in season five, when she dumped Ross for being even whinier than she is!
#9: Rosa Diaz & Jocelyn Pryce
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (2013-)
Leave it to Rosa to treat breaking up like a competition. When Rosa’s girlfriend Jocelyn breaks up with her at the Nine-Nine during a crisis, she pleads with her to stick around so that they can talk about it. However, she reveals her true motive to Jake shortly after, telling him that the real reason she wants Jocelyn to stay is so that she can mend their relationship only to break up with her at a later date - thus “winning” the breakup. If you’re thinking “that’s psychotic”, good! So did Peralta. However, by the end of the episode, cracks start to show in Rosa’s tough-as-nails façade - revealing that she cared more than she let on.
#8: Jade West & Beck Oliver
“Victorious” (2010-13)
The ship known as Bade ended their union in the appropriately titled third season episode “The Worst Couple”. They decided to call it quits after finishing last in a rehearsal for Sinjin’s new game show, Queries For Couples. Like most TV breakups, this one is made infinitely funnier by the presence of Jade and Beck’s closest friends, particularly Trina, who passionately tries to convince Beck to date her before he’s even had a chance to talk to Jade. While they’d ultimately get back together in season four, we’ll never forget Jade and Beck’s hilarious break up.
#7: Liz Lemon & Carol Burnett
“30 Rock” (2006-2013)
Liz started dating airline pilot Carol Burnett (not to be confused with famous comedian Carol Burnett) at the end of season four. However, it didn’t take them long to realize that their personalities were a little too similar. This came to a head when they decided to go on vacation in the season five episode "Double-Edged Sword". Trouble arose when the plane (piloted by Carol) got stuck on the tarmac for hours, causing Liz to lead a revolt among the passengers. In true “30 Rock” fashion, things go from weird to downright insane quickly, with Carol pulling a gun on Liz, and Liz using an elderly man as a human shield. Suffice it to say, this relationship didn’t work out.
#6: Fez & Nina Bartell
“That ‘70s Show” (1998-2006)
Fez and Nina started dating shortly after meeting at the DMV, where they both worked. Things started off well for the young couple, with Fez at long last losing his virginity. Fortunately, his subpar performance only convinced Nina that they needed to have MORE sex to practice. However, she later broke up with him for being "needy". Fez does his best to change - drawing Nina back. But ultimately, he decides that there's only one Fez: a man with needs! We could watch Fez tell Nina “it’s not me, it’s you” all day long."
#5: Jerry Seinfeld & Dolores
“Seinfeld” (1989-1998)
With the number of relationships Jerry, George, Kramer and Elaine burn through during “Seinfeld’s” nine season run, there’s no shortage of hilarious breakups to choose from. Among of the most hilarious was George’s girlfriend’s “it’s not you, it’s me” speech after seeing him slurping down ice cream on live TV. But we’ve gotta give this one to Jerry and Dolores. Jerry spends the entire episode trying to remember his girlfriend’s name- and trying to trick her into revealing it. The only thing he knows is that it rhymes with a part of the female anatomy. His best guess: Mulva. Yeah, we know. Unsurprisingly, when she discovers that Jerry has no idea what her name is, she ends it.
#4: Ted Mosby & Natalie
“How I Met Your Mother” (2005-2014)
For a hopeless romantic, Ted sure is great at torpedoing relationships. He infamously told Robin he loved her on their very first date, resulting in their relationship being put on hold for an entire season. While he waited for Robin to come around, Ted briefly dated Natalie, a woman from his past who he’d previously broken up with on the one day you NEVER break up with someone: their birthday. It soon becomes clear to Ted that Natalie still isn’t the one for him. So, he asks her to dinner (dressed in his favorite shirt, we might add), and breaks up with her, again. There’s just one major problem: it just so happens to be her birthday, again! Uh, yeah, Natalie wasn’t thrilled…
#3: Michael Scott & Jan Levinson
“The Office” (2005-2013)
Michael and Jan’s amorous entanglement was rife with moments of extreme hilariousness. However, there’s no denying that Jan treated Michael like crap. So, in the season three episode “Woman’s Appreciation” he decided to end things with her…by leaving her a message on her phone. The awkwardness gets cranked up to 11 when Jan walks into his office while he’s in the middle of leaving her the message. However, this cringeworthy scene was far from over, as Jan then proceeded to listen to the voicemail in front of him. As we watch from behind our fingers, we can’t help but laugh at Michael’s ineptitude.
#2: Eleven & Mike Wheeler
“Stranger Things” (2016-)
Mike and Eleven’s relationship was one of the highlights of seasons one and two of “Stranger Things”. However, season three saw them struggling to adapt to their new roles of boyfriend and girlfriend. This came to a head in the episode “Chapter Two: The Mall Rats”, when Eleven discovered that Mike had lied to her for the second time in less than a day. Egged on by her new BFF Max, Eleven decides to take her advice to “dump his ass”. And she does so by pronouncing those exact words . . . Sure, we felt bad for them, but El’s official declaration still made us chuckle.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are some honorable mentions:
Chris Traeger & Ann Perkins
“Parks and Recreation” (2009-2015)
George Michael Bluth & Anne Veal
“Arrested Development” (2003-06, 2013-)
Frasier Crane & Julia Wilcox
“Frasier” (1993-2004)
#1: Ross Geller & Rachel Green
“Friends” (1994-2004)
Ross and Rachel’s relationship had more ups and downs than a roller coaster, with one of the biggest downs coming in the season four episode "The One with the Jellyfish". After sleeping with another woman while they were on a break (allegedly), Ross is willing to do whatever it takes to get back in Rachel’s good graces. While Rachel ultimately gets him to repent, she rubs it in a little too much and Ross snaps. The aftermath is truly a sight to behold, with Ross criticizing Rachel’s grammar and Rachel firing back shots of her own . . .
