Top 10 Games That Need Remasters

Looks like everyone is getting remasters these days, so why not give these classics a chance? Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today, we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Games That Need Remasters!

For this list, we’re looking at older games whose update in the form of a remaster for the current generation are long overdue.

#10: “Conker’s Bad Fur Day” (2001)

“Conker’s Bad Fur Day” came out in 2001, making it seventeen years since the first game was released and twelve years since the Xbox remaster “Live & Reloaded.” While we would like a sequel of some kind, a remaster would be a more appropriate way to reintroduce Conker to the world. With modern graphics and better animations, the world of “Conker” would look just as lively as it did back then, especially with all those googly eyes plastered on everything.

#9: “Bloody Roar” series (1997-2003)

Of all the properties under the Konami name, how has “Bloody Roar” managed to go without a new game since 2004? The fighting series hasn’t aged terribly, either. Seeing our fighters transform into an ass-kicking beast is still cool, and it's something the other major fighting franchises aren’t doing. Plus, with the rise in eSports in the Fighting Game Community, “Bloody Roar” could see a future there, as well. What we’re trying to say is that “Bloody Roar” still has some fight left in it. It’s a real shame the series has missed two whole generations of gaming. Now would be a good time to bring it back.

#8: “Mother” trilogy (1995-2015)

Many gamers have never heard of the “Mother” series - partly because “Mother 2” was called “Earthbound” outside of Japan, and partly because the first game wasn’t even released outside of Japan until a Wii U Virtual Console port in 2015 under the name “EarthBound Beginnings.” As for “Mother 3” there still hasn’t been a port for players outside of Japan. We hope Nintendo is just waiting for the right opportunity to update this sought-after trilogy of games because they’re sitting on something truly special. The game might be old, but to remaster the trilogy and release it to the entire world...it’d be one hell of a historic moment in gaming.

#7: “Deus Ex” (2000)

Damn! Nearly two decades later, and this series is still going strong. While we are having a ball following Jensen in the prequel games, we’ve been patiently waiting to get back to the main story. We’ve been following Jensen around for so long that we’ve almost forgotten how great the first game was. While the gameplay is still fun and holds up surprisingly well given how much time has passed, it’s the visuals that need touching up. The blocky character models and lack of mouth animation bring us some nostalgia, but we’d rather see this game get cleaned up a bit.

#6: “Thief: The Dark Project” (1998)

Whew, man… That reboot from 2014 was far from what made the “Thief” franchise great. It didn’t really capture what made us fall in love with the series, what with the bad AI and bland story. What better way to reboot the series again than with a remaster of the first game? “The Dark Project” featured some amazing stealth-action gameplay while boasting some impressive sound design and graphics. Although, that was in a different time. It would be cool to see this game come back with updated graphics and audio while still keeping the immersive gameplay intact.

#5: “GoldenEye 007” (1997)

This N64 classic has been remastered before. We had a remake released in 2010 for the Wii, and then, an unofficial fan-made remaster for the multiplayer came out a month later called “GoldenEye: Source.” However, 2017 marked the game’s twentieth anniversary, and the occasion was met with very little fanfare. Besides, it has been far too long since we’ve been delivered a stellar James Bond game of any kind. We understand the reason it's remained absent for so long, as the game is tangled in licensing issues - don’t forget, this is a game based on a movie. With “Crash Bandicoot” igniting an interest in remasters in Activision, we’re hoping “GoldenEye 007” is making a comeback sometime soon.

#4: “Shenmue” (2000) & “Shenmue 2” (2002)

At the time, “Shenmue” was the most expensive game ever developed, with a budget clocking in at around seventy million dollars! With so many Dreamcasts collecting dust on store shelves, it's no wonder it was a commercial failure. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the sequel’s sales on the Dreamcast amounted to just one-tenth of the first game’s. Thanks to a massive cult following, years later, “Shenmue III” is in development again. However, would it be too much to ask for a remaster of the first two games? The first two games in the series are getting ported to the Xbox One and PS4, but we’re still holding out hope that they’ll overhaul the graphics and update the game to modern standards sooner than later.

#3: “Demon’s Souls” (2009)

We can’t get enough of “Dark Souls” or “Bloodborne.” With its difficult and addictive gameplay and deep lore, it's hard to put the controller down and say, “Enough is enough,” but I suppose we’re all just gluttons for punishment, aren’t we? Amidst our fascination with these franchises, we tend to forget that we may not have them if it weren’t for “Demon’s Souls”. This PlayStation 3 exclusive is just as challenging as the games that it paved the way for.

#2: “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City” (2002)

Of all the fictional cities the “Grand Theft Auto” franchise has taken us, we’d love to revisit Vice City. There was just something about running around a fictionalized Miami that felt so immersive and different from the rest of the series. Video games have changed a lot since 2002, just look at “Grand Theft Auto V” for comparison. Just think of all the brightly-colored chaos a modernized HD Vice City could provide!

Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few Honorable Mentions…

“Crash Team Racing” (1999)

“Fallout” (1997) & “Fallout 2” (1998)

#1: “Metal Gear Solid” (1998)

With “The Phantom Pain” marking what appears to be the end of series creator Hideo Kojima’s relationship with MGS and Konami, now is the perfect opportunity to remaster the first “Metal Gear Solid” game. This was one of the best games to own on PlayStation 1, as it had amazing visuals, engaging stealth gameplay, and kickstarted what would become one of Konami’s biggest franchises. To see this classic updated to run on a modern game engine would be jaw-dropping. If Kojima hadn’t left, we’d have a feeling he would make this happen. Unfortunately, we can only hope Konami will recognize the potential in remastering this to get the taste of “Metal Gear Survive” out of gamers’ mouths.
