#10: Karl
“Big Fish” (2003)
In this charming Tim Burton fantasy flick, one of the characters that Ewan McGregor’s Edward Bloom meets along his way is the misunderstood giant Karl. However, Edward’s athletic ability causes him to seek bigger and better, so he and Karl decide to leave the small town of Ashton. It’s a fateful decision for Karl, who ultimately finds his destiny when the two arrive at Calloway Circus and he takes the job of ‘giant man’ from the previous circus giant. Good-hearted, loyal and friendly, he is one larger-than-life character we all wish we had as a travelling companion.
#9: Friendly
“The Friendly Giant” (1958-85)
This giant is just as friendly to everyone around him as his name suggests. Appearing on the Canadian children’s show “The Friendly Giant”, the castle-dwelling Friendly goes about his day-to-day life with his animal friends, Rusty the rooster and Jerome the giraffe, while they get into many gentle and humorous conversations followed by stories and musical pieces. Thanks to Friendly and his furry friends, the show, as well as Friendly himself, became a Canadian cultural icon. After all, what Canuck kid can forget Friendly’s catchphrase: “Look up, waaay up”?
#8: Adam Szalinski
“Honey, I Blew Up the Kid” (1992)
The only “giant” on our list who is only temporarily enlarged to that state, Adam Szalinski is the newest family member of the Szalinski family. In this “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” sequel, we follow the misadventures of the 2-year-old, who has accidentally been zapped by his father’s latest invention, an enlarging machine. Things appear normal until Adam comes into contact with electricity, which allows him to grow in size each times he is near it. To make matters worse, as a giant toddler, Adam thinks everything around him is a playground.
#7: Mag Mar Tun Doh Weg
“Game of Thrones” (2011-)
Although Hodor and Wun Weg Wun Dar Wun are also worthy, towering men in “Game of Thrones,” we have to give this spot to Mag the Mighty. Though he only appears in one episode of the show, Mag is known as one of the biggest and strongest giants – hence why Mance Rayder dubbed him the “king” of the giants. Mag is also the actual leader of the giants in the Free Folk Army. Though he is powerful and surprisingly empathetic, it’s wise to stand clear of this angry colossus.
#6: The Titans
“Attack on Titan” (2013)
While the Colossal Titan stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of sheer size, we have to give this spot to all the regular, horrifying smiling titans of the anime series. Coming in a variety of sizes and looks, it’s up to protagonist Eren Jaegar to get rid of the Titans that killed his mother, destroyed his hometown and are on the verge of exterminating the remnants of humanity. Aside from their spine tinglingly creepy smiles, these huge humanoid creatures and antagonists seem to devour humans for no particular reason and can regenerate from most blows. While they display little intelligence, they are extremely quick, and can smell their prey! Better clear away from these guys.
#5: The BFG
“The BFG” (1989)
One of Roald Dahl’s beloved characters, The BFG is one giant that lives up to his name. After he snatches and befriends a young orphan girl, the pair sets off to find the Queen of the United Kingdom so they can get rid of the evil giants of Giant Country. Described in the book as 24 feet tall and possessing super hearing and super speed, the Big Friendly Giant also sends dreams to sleeping children. Though he has a delightfully particular way of speaking, we can’t help but laugh along with him, especially during the Frobscottle scene.
#4: The Hulk
Marvel Cinematic Universe (2003-)
He’s big and he’s mean – but only when you set him off. For those in the know, The Hulk is Bruce Banner’s alter ego, created by a gamma radiation accident. While Bruce Banner has super intellect, his massive doppelgänger can leap great distances, has super durability and superhuman strength, which only increases if he’s super angry, and more. While the Hulk is only trying to protect his loved ones, this green giant rarely disappoints.
#3: Nancy Archer
“Attack of the 50 Foot Woman” (1958)
Nancy Archer may be rich, but she’s also troubled, unstable and has a drinking problem. And though “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman” is generally regarded as one of the worst sci-fi movies ever made, we can’t help but enjoy watching Nancy as she grows to 50 feet tall after a close encounter with an alien and vows vengeance against her unfaithful husband. It’s not surprising that both the giantess and the movie itself have become quite the influences in pop culture. In other words, the history of cinema wouldn’t be the same without the feature, and as such, we can’t say we aren’t grateful that Nancy Archer has made such a big mark on the big screen.
#2: Fezzik
“The Princess Bride” (1987)
In one of Rob Reiner’s most beloved ‘80s films, Fezzik is the name of a big, powerful and gentle giant. Found and employed by the main antagonist Prince Humperdinck, Fezzik, along with Inigo and Vizzini, are tasked with kidnapping and killing Buttercup. Though Fezzik is not the brightest bulb in the box, he’s certainly the strongest. He’s also a good hearted simpleton who has a change of heart and ultimately helps Westley to save his true love, and Inigo to get his revenge. In the end, he actually does something right, which is alright with us.
Before we look up to our top pick, here are some honorable mentions:
- Fallon and the Giants
“Jack the Giant Slayer” (2013)
- Maximus Zamfirescu
“My Giant” (1998)
- Super Hot Giant Alien
“Dude, Where’s My Car?” (2000)
- Jaws
“The Spy Who Loved Me” (1977); “Moonraker” (1979)
- Gary Gulliver
“The Adventures of Gulliver” (1968-69)
#1: Hagrid
“Harry Potter” franchise (2001-11)
You probably saw this one coming. After all, Harry Potter would not have found out about the wizarding world and of course Hogwarts if not for the lovable half-wizard/half-giant Rubeus Hagrid. A former Hogwarts student, Hagrid became the school’s gamekeeper, which practically makes the school his home. One of Harry’s closest friends, and one with a fondness for many creatures, Hagrid is loyal, brave and kind to those dearest to them, and those are just some of the many reasons why he’s the top giant on our list.
