#10: “Born Free” (2010)
M.I.A.
Once banned from YouTube, this video took inspiration from footage of killings of the Tamil people, shortly after the Sri Lankan civil war. With intense scenes of militaristic brutality and violence, the video tells the story of the rounding up and execution of red-haired males. Though the savage beatings of the red-haired boys are hard enough to watch, the climax of the video involves a young boy being shot in the head at point blank range, with the remaining boys are forced to run through a minefield. Although unpleasant, this video was an uncomfortable reminder of the real atrocities going on in the world.
#9: “Let Me Burn”(2015)
Whitechapel
The story of a man slowly going insane and turning on his wife and daughter, this blood-soaked video was enough to make audiences feel ill. From breaking out of a mental hospital to tearing out his own teeth, the video follows a man's descent into madness and the murderous path he begins to follow. Gruesome scenes of decapitation and torture are followed by the almost sad scene of the man desperately begging his daughter to help him end it all. Shot in partly found-footage style, the disorientating and excruciating high-definition scenes of violence make this video an unsettling watch.
#8: “Ohrwurm” (2010)
Cephalic Carnage
If you don’t like creepy-crawlies, you might not want to watch this. Opening with a steamy sex scene, the video itself starts off relatively innocently, apart from some none-too-shy nudity. But things take a disgusting turn fast, as the camera blinks and suddenly the couple in question is covered in blood and maggots. Building as quickly as the music accompanying it, watching the main male character drag himself - minus his entrails - along the ground is enough to make the stomach turn. But what really makes this video turn audiences green? The final scene, where the worms discover a certain part of male anatomy. Ouch.
#7: “Tarnished Gluttony” (2012)
Job for a Cowboy
Not only using graphic and disturbing scenes of evisceration, the music video for this song was made even worse by using a child as its victim. Set in an alternate universe revolving around Lovecraftian mythology, watching a mysterious man carry an unconscious little boy into the woods immediately raises some red flags. Listening to his anguished screams before he carries out a bizarre and vomit-inducing ritual on the little boy is almost as bad as what he actually does to his victim. The camera never wavers and the audience sees everything, left with a sense of horror and probably feeling a little sick.
#6: “We Are Water” (2009)
HEALTH
This video kept audiences on the edge of their seats in suspense. In a heart-pounding chase scene, a girl who appears to be made up in childish dolls makeup is chased through the woods by a bloody, machete wielding man wearing nothing but his underwear. The entire scene has him right on her heels, getting closer with every step and keeping viewers holding their breath. Managing to get the upper hand after tripping and stabbing the man in his… ahem, the girl releases a silent scream and takes his head off with a swipe of the machete. Blood rains from the sky and from the body as the song trails off, and viewers are left with mild trauma.
#5: “Sweetest Kill” (2011)
Broken Social Scene
When it comes to gardening, some people have more of a red thumb. A mellow, steady beat carries this music video along, telling the classic story of a woman murdering her lover and chopping his body up into little pieces. After poisoning her hubby and neatly laying out plastic to protect the carpet, actress Bijou Phillips tackles the issue of cutting him up. Shown in gory, up close detail, the axe doesn’t work, so she takes up a hacksaw instead. The calm expression on her face, along with the sultry writhing in the garden after she buries him, makes this video a contrast to the other heavier-metal videos on our list.
#4: “From the Cradle to Enslave” (1999)
Cradle of Filth
This video has a little of of absolutely everything. With nudity, buckets of blood, various torture scenes and disturbing religious imagery, the violently quick transitions between various scenes in the video make it a dizzying watch. Accompanied by the screaming lyrics in the background that never slow down, we watch various characters prowl the shadows and inflict worlds of pain on each other. A hurricane of dark, gruesome imagery, the video throws so much at the viewer in so little time that it’s almost necessary to watch again. You know, if you want nightmares...
#3: “Born Villain” (2012)
Marilyn Manson
Though the entirety of this video is about as disturbing as it gets, its focus on blood, body horror, and violent murder solidifies its spot. With multiple scenes of men being shot in the head, eyeballs being removed and stitched into other bodies, as well as numerous women being pierced with large and painful looking needles, it’s not the video to watch if you’re not a fan of Manson’s style. What’s really surprising is that this video was directed by none other than Shia LaBeouf - which makes you wonder what else he might have up his sleeve.
#2: “Happiness in Slavery” (1992)
Nine Inch Nails
Banned almost everywhere upon its release, this video was inspired by the novel “The Torture Garden”. Following a man who calmly and almost ritualistically undresses and buckles himself into a sinister looking machine, the heart-pounding music accompanies the masochistic torture scene that plays out. Writhing in a mixture of both pain and pleasure, the naked man is horrifically tortured by the device until it eventually kills him, grinding his body into meat used to fertilize the garden below him. It suits the masochistic lyrics of the song perfectly, but watching it might not be for everyone.
Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few honourable mentions.
“A Little Piece of Heaven” (2007)
Avenged Sevenfold
“Rock DJ” (2000)
Robbie Williams
“War Metal Battle Master” (2008)
Lair of the Minotaur
#1: “Forced Gender Reassignment” (2012)
Cattle Decapitation

Warning: Don’t eat before, during, or after watching this video. As one of the most controversial music videos out there, the imagery and subject matter addressed within this short film includes rape, genital torture, dark religious tones, and brutal murder. A husband and wife undergoing exactly what the title says in excruciating detail while another man is violently tortured and killed had the video banned on various sites, including YouTube and Vimeo, before you could say “censored”. More like a grindhouse slasher than a music video, this video isn’t for the faint of heart - or stomach.
