Pentatonix, also known as PTX is best known for their medley-form song covers. After being discovered on the third season of NBC's “The Sing-Off” they formed a large fan following. We feel that a cover like this is created based off two words: challenge accepted. If you’re familiar with the original track, you know that a good chunk of the song is pure electronica with some lyrics courtesy of Justin Bieber. We were sure that Pentatonix would nail the lyrics, but how would a cappella work for a song like... this? Somehow, Pentatonix rises to the challenge and produces a cover that’s a more mellow interpretation of the song, even when they recreate the electronic elements with their voices, which is truly a sight to behold.

We were dying for Pentatonix to get their hands on this one. The video opens with Kevin doing his thing and we’re instantly snapping our fingers to the catchy beat. Each member of the group waits for their cue, with Mitch nailing the vocals while Kirstin and Scott back him up. You’re left wondering when Avi is gonna slink in, then that silky bass seamlessly blends with the music to remind us that they’ll never be royals -- they’re much too humble for that, as the video ends with them in their regular clothes, clearly thankful for their success.

Just when you thought Pentatonix had shown us everything they could do... they rap. After an inspirational message from Kevin, the video kicks into high gear as Scott channels his inner Macklemore with the rest of the crew backing him up -- musically and lyrically. While the song is definitely worth listening to, the video itself is done wonderfully, with each member having a chance in the spotlight as their clothes -- and location -- change depending on who's standing front and center. It feels like we get a taste of each of their personal styles, and each band member joins in on the fun.

The best part of waking up? Ash and dust. It’s the end of the world as we know it, and Pentatonix could use a bit of help. Enter Lindsey Stirling, the violinist walking the desolate streets as the group welcomes us to the new age. While Lindsey moves and plays at the same time, Kevin introduces us to “celloboxing” -- yep, he can play the cello and beatbox at the same time. If this is what the apocalypse sounds like, it may not be as soul crushing as we think... though there’s a severe lack of underground muppet fights... #6: “Hallelujah” (2016) Originally by Leonard Cohen
This is one of those songs that takes a bit of digging to find its origins, but that’s what happens when there’s over 300 known covers out there. You probably recognize John Cale’s cover from Shrek, or the most notable rendition courtesy of the late Jeff Buckley, but most recent, of course, there’s Pentatonix’s tribute in 2016, which reached 100 million views in about two months. While we still get the beatboxing and self-made sounds that we love, there’s a much bigger focus on vocal harmony. The cover was released on the group’s second holiday album, A Pentatonix Christmas, just a few weeks before original singer Leonard Cohen’s death, which would allow the track to act as a fitting tribute to a fallen legend.

By the end of listening to this Sam Smith medley, you’ll SWEAR that “La La La” and “Latch” were always one song. Kirstin starts us off with that familiar la la la, and we think we have an idea of where the song is going, but then we realize... Scott’s singing the lyrics to “Latch.” Mitch later chimes in with the lyrics to “La La La”, the music easily switching to match the change in tempo, and the group goes back and forth to create a perfect mashup that winds up in the cleverly titled “La La Latch” .

Ah, the 90s, back when boy bands ruled the day with their catchy songs and perfectly choreographed moves... or should we say... in sync moves? It’s almost criminal to pick only one song from *NSYNC’s library... so Pentatonix picked five. The group harmonizes some of the more memorable notes from a selection of hits, blending them together so when one song ends, another one begins, complete with new beats to match the change in lyrics. The medley is an early example of their creativity as they get up and go, then end it all with three simple words: bye bye bye.
#3: “Mary, Did You Know?” (2014) Originally by Michael English/h4> In case you didn’t know, Pentatonix loves the holidays, and they have done some great covers to some classic Christmas melodies. While that does make it difficult to pick just one since the group has two holiday albums, we had to give it to their cover of Michael English’s classic. Much like “Hallelujah”, there have been many covers to this song, but Pentatonix manages to put their own spin on it and take it to a whole new level. Each group member has a moment where they sing individually before they all come together for the chorus, holding candlesticks and belting out the question, “Mary, Did You Know?”
#2: “Evolution of Beyoncé” (2013) Originally by Destiny’s Child/Beyoncé/h4> It’s called an evolution for a reason (2:26). If you haven’t heard Pentatonix’s evolution videos, do yourself a favor and search for them on YouTube... after this video, of course. The group tackles the Queen Bee herself, starting with her “Destiny’s Child” days and evolving into her solo career. There are an impressive 25 songs in this single track, and the group seamlessly goes from one song to the next. This not only shows how far Beyoncé has come, but it shows a wide range of skills for Pentatonix, who make blending together 25 tracks look easy. Besides, hearing Avi say Bootylicious in that deep voice? Priceless. As if covering one Daft Punk song wasn’t enough, the group decided to do seven, and even took on futuristic personas to emulate the electronic duo. Much like our #10 pick, the group take their voices to the limit by creating electronic sounds with their voices while going through the tracks in one fluid motion.
