#10: Midship
“Halo 2” (2004)
For being the mortal enemies of humanity, the Covenant sure knows how to make some fun maps to play on. Midship is chaos wrapped in a pretty purple package. There’s always a frantic race to the middle for the bomb, the oddball, or the power weapon of choice. There are also plenty of nice little hiding spots for sniping or camping to take players out as they pass, hey it’s a legitimate strategy. Midship has always been a beloved map and has made subsequent returns in later Haloinstallments, the most recent being Truth in Halo 5, and it’s looking better than ever. Load up this map, check your corners and keep your shotguns handy for close encounters.
#9: Sandtrap
“Halo 3” (2007)
The maps in Halo 3 went for the largest scale possible at the time. Sandtrap is the epitome of that approach. Sporting a massive temple and nothing but sand all around (go figure), you’re not going to go long without finding an opponent but would be faster if you had a vehicle. There’s no shortage of those either, from Warthogs to Mongeese to Brute Choppers, it’s vehicular warfare on a desert stage. And for added epicness, you have the Elephants, mobile command centers that also serve as bases in Capture the Flag. The only things that could make this place any more exciting are a couple of worms popping up in the distance from time to time.
#8: Countdown
“Halo Reach” (2010)
Halo Reach has a fun set list of maps. Here in the Saber Fighter launch facility is where the battles are at their greatest. The Jetpack features of the game enable players to elevate themselves higher or leap that great gap in the middle to potential safety. There are a ton of bottleneck and choke points here too, making the sword, shotgun and Concussion Rifle present on the map, all the more favorable. The ramps may be one way rides to death but the gravity lifts are easy pick off points if you feel like just camping. Only the strongest teams with the best coordination can survive this onslaught to victory.
#7: Hang 'Em High
“Halo: Combat Evolved” (2001)
Remember when we said battles in Halo both make and break friendships? Well this map is a true test of those bonds. From the elevated catwalks encircling this map, you can see everything. And using the numerous burial mounds on the surface you might be able to evade them. But matching this maps terrain with the lethal Halo Combat Evolved Pistol and sniper rifles make this map fun for veterans and a living, but kind of fun, hell for newcomers. No matter which form this map takes on in the franchise, Hang Em High lives up to its ominous name as the ultimate death valley of the Halo multiplayer universe.
#6: Zanzibar
“Halo 2” (2004)
Ready for some Halo on the beach? Zanzibar is the ultimate getaway destination for anyone who wants both a close quarters slugfest or some Big Team Slayer carnage. The walkways are treacherous, especially the pathways within that shattered wall. There’s plenty of room to maneuver in Warthogs or Ghosts, bonus points if you can time a jump through that windmill. And there are plenty of little Easter eggs to seek out, like that infamous superjump. Your friends will definitely despise you if you can pull that off successfully AND have a sniper rifle. Granted that might’ve gotten patched in later incarnations but that doesn’t stop Zanzibar from being a great hotspot forHalo multiplayer excitement.
#5: Battle Creek
“Halo: Combat Evolved” (2001)
Once again, we’re back to the early days of multiplayer map legends. One little creek divides two small bases and the rockets, cloak and shotguns can mean the difference between early leads and dismal defeats. Like many maps that followed it, Battle Creek deceptively hides tactical, long range possibilities in such a small map, giving snipers as much fun as the close quarter combatants running across the creek. Many intense games of Slayer, Capture the Flag and other objective based game modes have been played in this Halo classic across multiple entries. And the fun has never stopped since it got going.
#4: Valhalla
“Halo 3” (2007)
Box canyon with two abandoned Forerunner bases, check. Caves and hills for different approaches, check. Man cannons to launch you from those two different bases, oh yeah. If Valhalla feels a little familiar, that could be because this is the spiritual successor to Blood Gulchwhen Halo 3 launched on the Xbox 360. Ever since its arrival, Valhalla has become the go to map for many fun matches in Halo3, especially some good old Capture the Flag. Valhalla’s always been an instant favorite amongst players and has seen welcome returns in Halo 4 and Halo 5 under new Viking themed names. Here’s hoping we see this battlefield paradise again in future games.
#3: Ascension
“Halo 2” (2004)
This Halo 2 classic has a little something for everyone. You’ve got great sniping positions if you want to play it sneaky. There’s a Banshee for the ultimate view of the entire battlefield. There’s even a handy rocket launcher for making easy work of said Banshee. Let’s not forget that death filled kill box in the center of the map. And good luck storming that main structure if the enemy team manages to lock it down. Ascension is one of the most played maps from Halo 2. So it’s no surprise that it was one of a few maps to be remastered for Reach and the Master Chief Collection, and given a new, high def lease on life.
#2: Lockout
“Halo 2” (2004)
Those who have played Halo 2 have no doubt found themselves playing here more than most other maps in the game. The close quarters combat here is legendary and those who know this map, backwards and forwards, upwards and downwards, know how best to get to the weapons that turn Lockout into their personal playground. With the hours of playtime dedicated to this map alone, Lockout has not only been reskinned for other entries in the Halo series, it has also a hotspot for Major League Gaming players to duke it out. If you’re looking to start playing Halo multiplayer or need to sharpen your skills, Lockout is your map.

#1: Blood Gulch
“Halo: Combat Evolved” (2001)
A long time ago, a question was asked on this map, “You ever wonder why we’re here?” The answer was, and still is, simple: to have the ultimate Halo battles and some friendly games of Assault and Capture the Flag. Blood Gulch is the original and most definitive Big Team Battle Halo Map with some of the most intense carnage being caused in a sizeable box canyon. All out assaults up the middle or stealthy long approaches through the caves and hills lead to the same results, victory or defeat. It’s no wonder Blood Gulch has continued to make regular appearances throughout the Halo franchise. May the Red vs. Blue wars here be eternal and unending.
