Top 10 Liz Lemon Moments

Listen up, dummies. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Liz Lemon Moments.

For this list, we’ll be looking at the funniest and most memorable Liz Lemon moments from Tina Fey’s brilliant comedy “30 Rock”.

#10: Airplane Standoff
“Double-Edged Sword”

After getting caught on a grounded plane captained by her boyfriend, Carol (played by Matt Damon), Liz at first tries to make the best of things. But the longer they’re trapped, and the longer their needs are ignored, Liz, along with the other passengers, begins to feel the heat. Stuck on the tarmac but unable to leave the plane, Liz stages a passenger revolt. The tension between the passengers and the crew intensifies, culminating with Liz and Carol in a stand-off on the grounded plane – and the end of their relationship.

#9: "I Can Have It All!"
“Sandwich Day”

Do not come between Lemon and her edibles! Every year, the TGS Teamsters bring sandwiches from a secret location for the show’s writing team. It is an annual tradition that they all – but especially Liz – look forward to. After one of the writers eats her sandwich, they must win a contest against the Teamsters to get another. Finally, Liz has her hard-won sandwich – but she might be about to lose her boyfriend, Floyd! In classic romcom fashion, she tries to get to him and stop him at the airport, but she is informed that she can’t bring her sandwich through security. But Liz is no quitter, and she is determined to have it all!

#8: Her Disastrous First Date with Dr. Drew
“St. Valentine's Day”

Liz asks her handsome neighbor, Dr. Drew, out on a date. She means for it to be casual, but accidentally schedules it for Valentine’s Day (this wouldn’t be a problem if we all just acknowledge Anna Howard Shaw Day!) In an attempt to keep it light, she decides just to have the date at home … and things slowly spiral into disaster. She accidentally flashes him, gets caught on the toilet, and finally his ex-wife shows up and drops off his daughter. Just when it seems like it can’t get worse, Liz becomes privy to a private family matter. Despite the many layers on this cringe cake, they decide to go for another date, because it can’t go any worse, right?

#7: Fake Pregnancy Photoshoot
"¡Qué Sorpresa!"

Avery Jessup, Jack’s long-time girlfriend, is one of the many career-oriented women on the show, and she isn’t about to let something like a little eight-month baby bump potentially derail her trajectory. However, Avery’s rival, Carmen Chao, wants very much to reveal everything – and so Liz steps in to say that it is in fact SHE that is pregnant. The ruse takes on a life of its own, with the TGS writers getting wind of it, and Carmen determined to out that Liz is covering for Avery. So, when Carmen tries to set up a pregnancy photoshoot to expose her lie, Liz does what she does best, leaning in and doubling-down.

#6: Drunk Dialing the Co-op Board
“Episode 210”

Liz may have skipped a few milestones along the way, but at Jack’s suggestion, she decides that maybe it is time to invest in buying an apartment. After finding a place she’s absolutely in love with, she is subjected to an interview with the co-op board … and it doesn’t go great. She waits for their return call, but like a jilted girlfriend, becomes desperate and calls them – while helping herself to glass after glass of liquid courage. The drunk dials go on throughout the night as she begs, rages, dramatizes, and finally rationalizes over what she assumes is the decision. Sometimes you’ve just got to move on.

#5: Saving Jack from Disaster
“Retreat to Move Forward”

While at the Six Sigmas Retreat – to which Jack brought Liz for support – Jack is told by his male peers to distance himself from her. So, he does. However, before giving a big speech, he heads to the bathroom to give himself a pep talk – totally forgetting that he is mic-ed to the front room. Leaping to action to help save Jack from embarrassment and disaster, Liz gets up on the stage, drawing focus to herself before whipping out, uh, the big guns by ripping open her shirt and prancing around to “Everybody Dance Now” so that she will be the only embarrassing moment anyone talks about. We could all use a friend like Liz from time to time.

#4: Buying All the Hotdogs
Pilot

In our very first glimpse of modern folk hero Liz Lemon, we see the head writer of The Girlie Show in line to buy hotdogs. When a rude man on a cell phone thinks his time is more valuable than hers and tries to cut in line, she counteracts by buying all of the hotdogs. Take that! Then, with over a hundred dollars’ worth of processed meat, she begins to distribute them, first to random people on the street and then people at work. Not all heroes wear capes!

#3:Her Old Phone Sex Commercial
“Apollo, Apollo”

After Liz finds out that Jenna and Dennis slept together in her bed, she lets Jenna get injured on-set. Sorry that she let a petty issue over a guy that she doesn’t even like get her friend hurt, she gives Jenna permission to reveal one of Liz’s own deep dark secrets to the TGS writers: her stint in a phone sex commercial. After making the reveal, she assures them they’ll never find the old ad – except they find it right away. Bad hair, wooden acting, and all the awkward sexual nuances ‘90s Liz Lemon could muster are on full display for the whole TGS team to see.

#2: Meeting “Oprah”
“Believe in the Stars”

While on a flight, and under the influence of a powerful sedative, Liz finds herself seated next to none other than Oprah Winfrey herself. She unloads her troubles to the beloved TV personality, seeking advice and wisdom, as she divulges all her anxieties and fears. This all seems great, but when she invites Oprah to the set of TGS, the person to arrive is not the talk-show queen at all, but . . .merely a little girl. Liz hallucinated the whole thing, while medicated. Still, the little girl is wise beyond her years and does some great conflict resolution. Oprah would be proud.

Before we unveil our number one pick, here are a few honorable mentions:
- Changing the Water Cooler Tank
“The Natural Order”

- "Night Cheese"
“The Ones”

- Listing Random Facts When She Thinks Her Plane Will Crash
“Reunion”

#1: Princess Leia in Court
“The Funcooker”

Liz Lemon is a bit of a nerd and something of a Star Wars fan. While a season earlier, the real Princess Leia made a guest appearance, midway through season 3 Liz herself dons the white gown and iconic wig. Of course, this is all just to get out of her civic duty: what she calls a foolproof get-out-of-jury-duty method. She dresses up as Leia Organa and maintains that she is seriously unfit to serve. Unfortunately, she didn’t quite anticipate just what the legal system was like in New York City. But hey, the look was so memorable that she gets robed up once more on her big day with Criss.
