Top 10 Hilarious SNL Food Sketches
#10: “Totino's with Kristen Stewart”
When it comes to the Super Bowl, the commercials are almost as important and anticipated as the game itself. And for three straight years, “SNL” got in on the action with their commercial parody for Totino’s Pizza Rolls that they would air the Saturday night before the big game. In the first iteration, Vanessa Bayer is the dutiful wife making food for her hungry guys and occupying herself with the included Totino’s activity pack for women. The second ad in 2016 takes a sci-fi path and the 2017 ad brings in Kristen Stewart to heat things up in the kitchen. The ad hysterically calls back to the misogyny of the original one as Stewart awakens Bayer to things she’s never felt before.
#9: “Smorgasbord”
Smorgasbord begins with a black and white intro that answers the question, “what if Ingmar Bergman created a show for the Food Network?” Seth Meyers and Scarlett Johansson are the hosts of this dark, and somewhat depressing, Scandinavian cooking show. They cook, and mourn the love they can only act on once Johansson’s comatosed husband passes away. The funny monotone and repressed delivery is only broken up by the hysterical commercial for the Swedish Chef ringtones. This was, of course, back in 2006 when people would actually pay for ringtones.
#8: “Cooking With Paul”
“Cooking with Paul” sounds like a typical cooking show, but in the hands of “SNL” writers, it’s anything but. You see, while Paul is a James Beard award winning chef, he’s also a 3-time convicted offender. And, while Paul seems barely interested in the food he’s making, he appears to be much more focused on getting some time on the internet. Which, Dwayne Johnson, as his probation officer is there to keep him from doing. The sketch is pretty much a one-note, one-joke premise. But it works because every time Kenan Thompson tries to jump online, that one-joke is pretty funny.
#7: “Thanksgiving Foods”
The best way to describe this one is, Kristen Wiig telling dad jokes about Thanksgiving foods. But we can’t forget Kenan Thompson as a 35-year-old who always wants to sit at the kids table and Bobby Moynihan in boxer shorts and a top hat making funny noises with his mouth. If it sounds weird, that’s because it most definitely is. But for some reason, it’s also really funny. From the candied yam (a yam with a picture of John Candy on it) to Thompson’s turkey drawing. You might not want to laugh, but you will.
#6: “Extreme Baking Championship”
If your favorite part of baking competition shows is when the contestants mess up, then this is the sketch for you. A sketch that takes messing up your bake to a whole other level - a level that includes a sorry-looking Olaf from “Frozen,” a Cookie Monster cake so bad it begs to be put out of its misery, and a Yoda cake that’s, let’s just say, ‘rated R it is.’ You might think that when one of the cakes starts talking it would be too weird to be funny, but that sure isn’t the case.
#5: “Sticky Bun”
You wouldn’t think it would be that hard to greet customers, take their order, and make polite conversation. But for the three Sticky Bun trainees in this sketch from 2017, it seems downright impossible. Mikey Day, Octavia Spencer, and Melissa Villaseñor play the three wannabe-employees and one after the other they each find new ways to mess up the simple customer interaction - some more cringe worthy than others. But as it turns out, the bar is set pretty low given that this particular Sticky Bun is located in an airport.
#4: “Pizza Business”
Melissa McCarthy is a comedic force of nature like few others, and numerous “SNL” hosting gigs have produced a number of top-notch sketches. Including this one, in which she plays Barb Kelner, a woman trying to get a bank loan for her leftover pizza-eating business. The premise is good for a laugh or two, but what makes this sketch list-worthy is McCarthy. The character is hysterical and we have to give props to Jason Sudeikis for not breaking when McCarthy is going full out slow-mo running and describing her idea for her business van.
#3: “NPR's Delicious Dish: Schweddy Balls”
For a certain generation of “SNL” viewers, the mere mention of Schweddy Balls will bring back hysterical memories of this brilliant sketch from 1998. Alec Baldwin, as Pete Schweddy, joins Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon for an episode of their NPR show “Delicious Dish.” Sure, the constant double entendres regarding Pete’s delicious balls is LOL after LOL, but it’s all made that much better by the calm and quiet-voiced trio who are completely naive to what they’re actually saying. Everything about this one is classic. To paraphrase Pete Schweddy, no one can resist the Schweddy Balls sketch. And over a decade later, Betty White got into the double-entendre food game when she, as Florence Dusty, introduced the Delicious Dish to her dusty muffins.
#2: “Lunch Lady Land”
Adam Sandler was a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” for four years from 1991-95. And in that time, he performed a number of catchy, and funny, songs on the show. If this list was about holiday sketches, the “Hanukkah Song” would be on it. If it was about clothing sketches, then this would be where we mention “Red Hooded Sweatshirt.” However, with this list being food-focused, we had to go with the classic, “Lunch Lady Land.” A song made even better by Chris Farley’s, let's call it a modern dance performance. There are no doubt those who saw this sketch back in 1994 and still can’t help but bust out the chorus every time they hear about a sloppy joe.

#1: “The French Chef”
In the vein of ‘The Black Knight’ from “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” - another classic 70s bloody comedy bit - comes Dan Aykroyd as Julia Child in “The French Chef.” The skit begins with Child deboning a chicken, until she cuts herself and the blood starts to gush. Like the Black Knight, Child tries to go on with the show, but the more she does to try and stop the bleeding, the more the set - and herself - gets covered with blood. And the more the audience cracks up. We aren’t the only ones that love this classic sketch either. According to the documentary “Julia,” Child loved the sketch as well, and even had a video of it that she would show at dinner parties.
