Here are the must-visit destinations of the year. Welcome to MojoTravels, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Hottest and Trendiest Cities to Visit in 2019.
For this list, we’ll be looking at cities that everyone's buzzing about this year, and which you should definitely consider for your next trip.
#10: Dubrovnik, Croatia
Over the past few years, this gem on the Adriatic Sea has seen a notable influx of travellers, and it’s not hard to understand why. Long overlooked by the international travel community, the Republic of Croatia is finally getting the attention it has always deserved. Though you’ll want to travel all around the country when you visit, the city of Dubrovnik is the real star attraction. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dubrovnik is steeped in history. Spectacular beaches, a picturesque surrounding landscape, incredible architecture, a delectable cuisine and great local wine - there’s a bit of everything in this fairytale city. Seriously, it’s impossible to not enjoy yourself in Dubrovnik.
#9: Singapore
This destination isn’t for travelers on a shoestring budget, but a trip to Singapore is well worth saving up for. This city-state and island in Southeast Asia covers just 279 square miles of land, but in that space, it packs in more culture and sights than countries many times its size. Singapore is a city of contradictions - or at least improbable balance. It boasts some of the most modern architecture seen anywhere in the world, and yet it is notable for its lush green spaces. You’d think that a nation so small would be culturally homogenous, but it is actually a rich tapestry of various Asian cultures, all of which can be experienced in this diverse city. Oh, and for foodies, it should be noted that the cultural density has resulted in one of the greatest food scenes found anywhere on the planet.
#8: Cartagena, Colombia
Known as the “Jewel of the Indies”, Cartagena boasts a beautiful climate, a rich culture and history, as well as plenty of opportunities for rest and relaxation at nearby beaches. When you visit the city, located on Colombia’s northern coast, the first word that comes to mind is “vibrant”. The city is truly alive. Art is everywhere you look, from the street art of the Getsemani neighborhood, to the numerous galleries. The charming, colorful streets and buildings are works of art in themselves, just waiting to be immortalized in your photos. Cartagena is a city inhabited by people with a real love of life, and they express that through music, dance and, of course, food. For the traveler in need of inspiration and an uplifting experience in 2019, Cartagena is the place to go.
#7: Dakar, Senegal
Senegal’s capital city, Dakar bears the distinction of being the westernmost city on the mainland African continent. It has long been famous for its namesake off-road endurance race, but since the Dakar Rally was moved to South America, people have started appreciating all the other reasons to visit. It’s a city in which old and new collide in a fascinating ways. High-end cars share the road with horse-drawn carts. Livestock crosses the street when you least expect it. No visit to Dakar is complete without a day-trip to Île de Gorée, for a fascinating but sobering reminder of the area’s history. Back on the mainland, culturally speaking, it’s a city that is on-trend but still deeply proud of its traditions, which shine through in music, food and nightlife. What’s most striking about Dakar however, is the unparalleled hospitality of its people.
#6: Tbilisi, Georgia
Straddling Eastern Europe and Western Asia, Georgia isn’t exactly the first country that people think to visit. But that’s beginning to change, and it’s in no small part thanks to the nation’s captivating capital city, Tbilisi. In 2018, Forbes called it the Year’s Most Exciting City. But how is it that this destination — -unappreciated by many until fairly recently — has become such a must-visit? It speaks to a shifting trend in travel. Many travelers are tired of artifice and tourist-centric cities. Tbilisi is rich in history and culture. Yes, it’s recently undergone a cultural renaissance with the opening of new bars, hotels and restaurants, but it’s all firmly rooted in their unique cultural identity. Tbilisi feels like one big treasure hunt, with little gems and new experiences awaiting around every corner.
#5: Berlin, Germany
Germany as a country, is one of enduring appeal, and it’s capital city, Berlin, continues to draw travelers in droves year after year. Though it’s popularity is well-established, a return visit to Berlin never fails to yield new pleasures and experiences. Obviously, this city’s terrible history makes it of great interest to World War II buffs. Its architecture is the stuff of legend, both with its historic buildings and fascinating modern structures. Another German city renowned for a rich history of beer culture, Berlin will feel like a promised land for suds lovers. Then there’s the nightlife, which speaks for itself. Berlin indeed has a great deal to offer, but if you’ve already made more than one trip to Germany’s capital and are looking to switch things up, Frankfurt is another destination that’s looking to be very on-trend in 2019.
#4: Matera, Italy
Italy has long been among the most visited countries in the world and is unlikely to lose its appeal anytime soon. If Rome, Venice and Florence are starting to feel like old news to you however, you may want to follow travelers in-the-know and head a little further south to Matera. Located in the Basilicata region, Matera is famous for its sassi, two neighborhoods made up of cave-dwellings - homes literally carved into the rock. It’s a fascinating slice of human history, as the area has been continuously inhabited for approximately 7,000 years. If you plan your trip well ahead of time, you can even stay in one of these unique dwellings. Though historically a poor city, people have become absolutely fascinated by Matera, ushering in a modern renaissance there. While in Southern Italy, you should also be sure to check out Palermo.
#3: Mexico City, Mexico
Long thought of as “too dangerous to visit”, Mexico City is a destination that has changed its reputation in recent years thanks to a number of government and community initiatives. Yes, there’s still crime, and you need to be a self-aware traveler there, but it’s a culturally rich and vibrant city with a lot to offer. Mexico City is a modern metropolis on the cutting edge of many scenes, including fashion, architecture, art and food. Indeed, foodies who venture here will find themselves wanting to indefinitely extend their stay, desperate for more time to try the seemingly endless must-try establishments and dishes. Of course, Mexico City is also incredibly rich in history and culture, and the museums and attractions could fill out an entirely separate trip!
#2: Shenzhen, China
China is a country with many cities worth visiting, and pretty much too much to see in one trip. In 2019 however, a number of cities have risen to the forefront as must-visit destinations, including Xiamen and Chengdu. If there’s one stand-out however, it’s got to be Shenzhen, located in Guangdong Province. As a relatively young city, Shenzhen is defined first and foremost by its modernity. Many people who add it to their trip itinerary do so for the shopping, but that is only scratching the surface of this incredible metropolis. The architecture has earned Shenzhen UNESCO status as a City of Design. It’s a city of young, ambitious individuals, who are pushing not only the boundaries of entrepreneurship, but art, fashion, music and food as well. Honestly, whatever you’re into… Shenzhen has likely got you covered.

The city is efficiently run and is on the cutting edge in so many ways. Simultaneously, it has a joie de vivre about it and a quiet vibrancy that’s absolutely infectious. Culture abounds and is strongly supported and fostered. Sadly, we can’t all move there, and so we’ll settle for the next best thing - a nice long visit.
