Top 10 Iconic Mary-Kate & Ashley Fashion Moments

Top 10 Iconic Mary-Kate & Ashley Fashion Moments
VOICE OVER: Phoebe de Jeu WRITTEN BY: Mandy Anne Lutman
The most iconic Mary-Kate and Ashley fashion moments mastered the art of coordination. Our countdown includes the butterfly print, all in black, "Full House" styles, and more!

#10: “Full House” Styles

The iconic Olsen fashion started way back in the “Full House” days. If you think that Michelle Tanner had an amazing sense of style, you’re not wrong. She could pull off pretty much any outfit! In an interview, the twins revealed that they’d be in six-hour fittings three times a week because Michelle would wear 12 different designer outfits. And they mainly included Marc Jacobs and Chanel. Just look at this adorable duo, all pretty in pink! They were already stylin’ in 1988, as Michelle Tanner started to win over people’s hearts in “Full House.” Two words can describe this fashion moment: absolutely adorable.

#9: Quintessential ‘90s

Fast forward to a couple of years later and the Olsen twins really started to show off their style. This photo was taken in 1996, at the premiere of “Alaska.” Although they were usually wearing identical outfits, this quintessential 90s style is completely different but absolutely iconic at the same time. The shoes, the color coordination, the glasses, the hats... Both looks are just stunning and incredibly bold choices to be worn by ten-year-olds! But of course, these weren’t just any regular ten-year-olds. By that time, “Full House” ended and the Olsen twins were among the most famous twins in Hollywood!

#8: Coordinated

This look pretty much sums up how we remember Mary-Kate and Ashley in their movies. Simple, but at the same time, very stylish. And, of course, let’s not forget the amazing coordination. Baby blue and baby pink pashmina-inspired skirt, with identical black blouses, and a Kate Spade handbag. This wasn’t the first time or last time these two tried out a coordinated look. Just take a look at this bold choice of suites at one of their book signings. The Olsen twins definitely had a lot of style even way before their teenage years!

#7: The Butterfly Print

2000s fashion was full of boho-inspired looks and Mary-Kate & Ashley definitely followed that trend. A butterfly print camisole was a simple choice for a red carpet premiere. But they definitely still managed to shine in their unique twinning style. Matching and coordinated, in true Olsen twins fashion. Butterfly hair clips were a huge thing during that time, so why not go one step further and put butterflies on a top? Another lowkey look of the twins compared to some of their other fashion choices, but still just as adorable and inspiring. Brb, buying a butterfly print camisole top and bringing that back.

#6: Black & White

Over the years, the Olsen twins proved they are masters of color coordination. But sometimes, something as simple as a black and white look can be just as effective as flashy statement outfits. Their black and white coordination works perfectly - just look at the snap from the WSJ Magazine 2018 Innovator Awards! They also dressed in a similar style two years before, when they attended the opening celebration of the Elizabeth and James Flagship Store. As always, the twins continue to let people know that even though they’re twins, they’re completely different. Different personalities, different character traits, but they definitely both have an eye for style.

#5: Finding Their Own Style

As the twins began to grow up, the difference in their personalities became more noticeable. Over the years, they started experimenting with finding their own style, not limiting themselves to coordination choices. One embraced a bohemian style and the other wore a halter neck gown. A smart choice to wear to the premiere of “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.” Another example of the two finding their own style is when they received their Hollywood Walk of Fame star back in 2004. Although they both decided to go with a dress, their outfit choices were completely different, as were their accessories.

#4: Style Icon Award

Another iconic look from the Olsen twins happened in 2010 when the two accepted their Style Icon Award. A very fitting title for two passionate fashionistas. Their red carpet look was fabulous, making it slightly easier to tell them apart. To the event, Ashley decided to go with a Christian Lacroix look with a vintage bag and added Fendi shoes. Meanwhile, Mary-Kate opted out for Lanvin with a Proenza Schouler bag. In case you have any trouble telling them apart, here’s a little hint - Mary-Kate is an inch taller than her sister Ashley. If you ever see them use their hands, pay attention - Ashley is right-handed while Mary-Kate is left-handed.

#3: Wearing Their Own Brand

The Olsen twins introduced their own clothing brand called The Row back in 2006. This helped to establish themselves as serious New York fashionistas. It’s no wonder they were nominated for Womenswear Designer of the Year and Accessories Designer of the Year at the 2017 CFDA Fashion Awards. Their fashion line was a huge hit, so much so, they even wore it themselves. They celebrated their nomination by showing off their menswear-inspired looks from The Row. Although much simpler than their normal red carpet looks, this was definitely a captivating style that sent an important message about the style diversity of their brand.

#2: All in Black

As they grew older, their fashion sense turned more serious. Long gone were the baby blue and baby pink pashmina-inspired skirts. Now it was all about serving bold looks in black. When it comes to the CFDA Fashion Awards, these two definitely have a thing for all-in-black outfits, because here they are again! In 2018, they showed off their look in flat shoes, ditching the high heels and flashy dresses. They also did the same back in 2015 when they were spotted serving absolute looks in their all-black outfits. From accessories all the way down to their shoes. And they were definitely working it!

#1: Met Gala Moments

When it comes to fashion, we just have to talk about Met Gala. Over the years, Mary-Kate and Ashley wore some pretty impressive looks and intentionally broke the dress code themes by wearing vintage pieces. Their boldest choice definitely happened in 2017 when the two showed off their boho roots. The beauty of their fashion sense is that they never stuck to the same style. From the 2005 white and gold look to Ashley’s 2018 medieval-themed outfit that had everyone talking, these two have been serving Met Gala looks since the beginning of time. Let’s throw in the 2015 all-black look as well - after all, these two never fail to look good in black!
