“Durarara!!” (2010-16) With a city filled with criminals, yakuza, supernatural beings, as well as gangs defined by colours, life in Ikebukuro is far from boring. Among the many gangs that call Ikebukuro home, one of the biggest is a group known as the Dollars. Known as a colour gang without a colour, the organization is shrouded in mystery. When the leader of the Dollars organizes a mass gathering of its members, it’s revealed that the gang’s founder is none other than the timid and soft-spoken Mikado Ryuugamine. Originally starting out as a joke by Mikado and some friends, the Dollars eventually grew into something bigger than he could have ever have imagined, allowing him an escape from his normal everyday life.

“Angel Beats!” (2010) Despite its many comedic moments, “Angel Beats!” is considered one of the saddest anime of all time. After waking up at a school in purgatory filled with other souls, Otonashi joins the Afterlife Battlefront, or SSS, an organization that rebels against God, as well as the student council president, Kanade Tachibana. After befriending Kanade, Otonashi slowly remembers his past, including his final moments where he decides to donate his organs to help others. To his surprise, Kanade reveals that she inherited his heart and her one regret was being unable to thank him for saving her life. As Kanade bids Otonoashi farewell and passes on, viewers are left in pieces!

#8: Charon Deflects the Beam

“Fire Force” (2019-) After being tasked with abducting Nataku Son, a child possessing the power of the Adolla Burst, the White-Clad cult find themselves in a three way brawl with Force Force Company 8 and Hajime Industries. Due to the White-Clad Haumea using her powers to increase Nataku’s aggression, as well as the combined stress of the fight and his own mental traumas, he literally goes nuclear. When his powers reach their peak, he fires a powerful energy beam, forcing White-Clad Charon to use his own ability to absorb the beam and reflect it towards the moon. He may be part of an evil cult hellbent on burning the world, but even villains can have their share of badass moments. MVP right here.

“Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood” (2009-10) After a chance encounter with former State Alchemist Tim Marcoh, the Elric brothers, discover a lead to the Philosopher’s Stone, as well as a way to restore their bodies. Though their investigation gets interrupted at every turn, Ed and Al successfully find Marcoh’s notes. However, after decoding the notes, they’re horrified to learn that the only way to create a Philosopher’s Stone is by sacrificing human lives. The overwhelming implications of this discovery results in a series of chain events that not only affects Ed and Al, but the entire country of Amestris.

#6: Karla’s Proposal

“Kengan Ashura” (2019) Even if he’s fighting to the death, Ohma Tokita is able to keep his cool in even the most extreme situations. So it is pretty shocking that all it takes to shatter his calm façade is a marriage proposal. After being confronted by Karla of the Kure Clan, Ohma's fighting ability impresses her to the point where she unexpectedly asks him to be her husband. Unable to properly react, Ohma proceeds to run as far away from her as possible. After defeating her relative Raian, Karla’s desire to marry Ohma, as well as her eccentric behaviour, has only gotten stronger. Good luck Ohma, you’re gonna need it! But let’s be honest, you could do so much worse!

#5: Seras Becomes a True Vampire

“Hellsing Ultimate” (2006-12) It’s hard to say whether Seras is cursed with misfortune or blessed with the devil’s luck. As a child, she witnessed the brutal murder of her parents and as an adult sh was attacked by a vampire, before becoming one herself. Although she hesitates to complete her transformation at first, that all changes during her fight with the vampire Zorin Blitz. After Zorin pushes Seras over the edge by forcing her to relive her parents murder, as well as killing her comrade Pip, she drinks his blood and ascendes, becoming a creature of such power that even a group of psyhopathic Nazi Vampires are scared shitless by her very prescence!

#4: Kaede's Real Identity

“Assassination Classroom” (2015-16) After being tasked with saving the world from the tentacled being known as Koro-sensei, the students of Class E came up with some creative ways to assassinate him. Among the many surprises the students have pulled to achieve this goal, the ace held by Kaede Kayano was perhaps the most shocking. Not only did Kaede create a false identity just to get closer to and study Koro-sensei to avenge her dead sister, she also possesses her own pair of superhuman tentacles. As they slowly erode her sanity, sweet little Kaede becomes a bloodthirsty monster hellbent on revenge. Thankfully, the combined efforts of her love interest Nagisa and Koro-sensei were able to help snap her out of it.

“Death Note” (2006-07) With the power of the Death Note, Light Yagami became hellbent on becoming the god of a new world, choosing to eradicate the current one of all he perceived as evil. As his kill count grows, Light finds himself in a battle of wits against the world’s greatest detective, L. With an intellect that rivals his own, both L and Light come to respect one another as worthy foes. You would think that with such an intense rivalry, these two prodigies would continue their duel until the very end. Unfortunately, L fails to surpass Light’s cunning plan, bringing their battle to an unfortunate conclusion.

“Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance” (2009) When it comes to protecting the people he loves, Shinji is willing to go to any lengths. After watching Rei get swallowed by the Angel Zeruel, Shinji and Evangelion Unit-01 exceed their limits to destroy the angel and save her. Ironically, even though Shinji emerges victorious, the price he pays turns out to be too high. By awakening Evangelion Unit-01, Shinji also creates the cataclysmic event known as the Third Impact, heralding the end of the world. In the sequel film, Shinji faces the horrific consequences of his actions as the remnants of humanity, including his former comrades, turn against him. Poor guy can’t seem to catch a break.

However, that feeling of peace shatters after Aizen stabs his loyal lieutenant. In a series of frantic twists, Aizen reveals himself to be a traitor and that he was manipulating everyone from the very beginning. He also admits to assassinating all members of Central 46, as well as organizing Rukia’s execution. All for the sake of achieving his goal to become the ultimate being.
