Of all the famous criminal confessions, there have been some famous confessions in history that came on social media. Whether it was Facebook, YouTube, 4Chan, or some other site, murderers have admitted to killings on social media. Samantha Stansifer killed her cheating boyfriend and posted about it on Facebook. Earl Valentine killed his 15-year-old son while trying to murder his ex-wife. Matthew Cordle drove drunk, killed a man and posted about it on YouTube. WatchMojo counts down ten cases of crime confessions on Facebook or other social media sites.

Top 10 Killers Who Confessed to Their Murders on Social Media

Here’s a status update you don’t want to see. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down the Top 10 Killers Who Confessed to Their Murders On Social Media. For this list, we’re looking at people who committed a murder, then posted about it either on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, or another community forum on the web.

#10: Earl Valentine

In 2016, Earl Valentine broke into his ex-wife, Keisha’s house in North Carolina with a loaded gun. He shot her in the chest, but their 15-year-old son, Earl Jr., leapt in the way to shield his mother from any more bullets. Earl Jr. called 911 once his father left the scene, and uttered what would be his last words. On the run, Valentine streamed a Facebook Live video, where he confessed to killing his wife. It was later revealed that his wife was critically injured, but survived - he only killed his son that night. Valentine was later tracked in South Carolina, but escaped justice by committing suicide.

#9: Jacob Rogers

Sometimes friends fall out, but Jacob Rogers took it to the extreme in 2015. When his roommate, Andrew Jones, was sleeping, Rogers woke him up and shot him multiple times. The 27-year-old Racine man then took to Facebook to confess his murder, apparently believing Jones had stolen his money. Unsurprisingly, he was arrested soon after. Curiously, he pled not guilty even though he confessed to the crime online, and there was video footage of the shooting from a security camera in their apartment. In 2016, Rogers was sentenced to life in prison.

#8: Samantha Stansifer

In June 2015, Samantha Stansifer suspected her on-and-off boyfriend, Jim Anthony Hall, had been cheating on her. When Hall was asleep, Stanisfer saw texts on his phone, and that was enough to trigger her. Using two kitchen knives, Stansifer stabbed Hall repeatedly in the head and body. In total, she reportedly stabbed Hall 58 times, slashed his throat, and cut off his penis. She then updated her status on Facebook confessing to what she’d just done, saying “I did it. He deserved it”. She called police and they later found her soaked in Hall’s blood. In 2016, Stansifer was sentenced to Life without Parole.

#7: Randy Janzen

Friends of Randy Janzen were shocked after they logged in to Facebook one day and saw this. In a long post, Janzen admitted to killing his daughter, Emily, because he hated seeing her suffer from migraines and depression. Her health had derailed her academic career and hurt her ability to pursue her passion for opera. Additionally, Janzen confessed to killing his wife too, because he didn’t want her to live knowing Emily was dead. He lastly admitted to killing his sister, so she wouldn’t have to live with the shame. The triple homicide took place over 10 days, while Janzen committed suicide by gunshot amid a house fire during a confrontation with police.

#6: Matthew Cordle

Matthew Cordle shocked the world when he posted this video on YouTube in 2013. Showing Cordle sitting in a dark room with a digitized face and voice, he describes how he tried, and failed, to drive drunk. Instead, he ended up crashing his truck head-on with another vehicle, killing its driver, 61-year-old Vincent Canzani. In the video, Cordle goes on to say he could fight the charge, but will plead guilty and take full responsibility for his actions. He ended up doing just that, and was later sentenced to 6 and a half years in prison with a lifetime suspension of his driver’s license.

In June 2015, 49-year-old James Thomas was living with his girlfriend Vanessa Taylor in Chicago. Early on June 30th though, Vanessa’s adult son noticed a strange post from his mother’s Facebook page. It read: ‘My girlfriend was part of the mob. She came to kill me, so I killed her’. Police were called to her apartment soon after, and they found Vanessa dead, strangled by Thomas using a computer cord. Tragically, just days prior he had been admitted to a mental hospital for disturbances like cutting his building’s gas line, burning grease, making Molotov cocktails and walking around with samurai swords. He was released the day before this incident.

In early November 2014, David Kalac and his girlfriend Amber Coplin, a mother of 5, got into a heated argument that was most likely the catalyst for what was to come. The next night, members of the popular website 4Chan saw images of Coplin’s dead body posted up by Kalac, with some horrific comments included. Site users thought it was a hoax, but Kalac insisted they look for him on the news. Coplin’s body was found by her teenage son, and after police were called, Kalac was apprehended. He confessed to the crime, stating he did it because he was drunk and pissed off, and that he enjoyed running from the police.

#3: Steve Stephens

Apparently distraught by a breakup, Steve Stephens took to Facebook in 2017 to upload something from our worst nightmares. Stopping his car in front of the elderly 74-year-old Robert Godwin, Stephens gets out and tells him to say his ex’s name. The Cleveland man then shoots him point blank in the head as Godwin tries to shield his face. While steaming a recap of the event, Stephens drives away, claiming that he’s killed numerous others as well. The killer was located following a long search, when he was recognized by employees of a McDonald’s drive-thru - but he took his own life in Pennsylvania before police could apprehend him.

#2: Bart Heller

In December 2011, 43-year-old Bart Heller was having a difficult time getting over a breakup from 19-year-old Erin Jehl. A few days after the split, Jehl stopped by Heller’s residence to pick up a few things with a friend, Ryann Tipton, also 19. Unfortunately, they never made it back out of the house, as Heller shot and killed them both. Heller then posted an update on Facebook explaining the killings before taking his own life. An acquaintance called the police, who soon confirmed the worst. Since then, friends and family have planned to demolish the house and build a memorial in its place. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: - Amanda Taylor - Rosemarie Farid - Dang Van Khuyen

#1: Derek Medina

Amateur boxer Derek Medina and his wife Jennifer Alfonso had a rough relationship, and it all fell apart in August 2013. During a fight over Medina failing to wake Alfonso, things escalated quickly, with Alfonso throwing bathroom objects at him, and the altercation moving to the kitchen where she supposedly threatened him with a knife. At that point, Medina retrieved his gun and shot her 8 times before taking a photo of her crumpled corpse, and posting it to Facebook. Medina turned himself in to police, claiming the incident was self-defense, but surveillance cameras set up by the couple painted a clear enough picture to earn Medina life in prison.
