Hyrule’s greatest enemies are no match for a boy in a green tunic. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Legend of Zelda Boss Battles. For this list, we’re ranking these battle based on how memorable and well designed the boss fights were, be it because of their creative nature or heart pounding action, these are the greatest fights to one of the greatest gaming franchises ever made.

“The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past” (1991) Agahnim hasn’t had quite as much staying power as some other big baddies in the world of “Zelda.” Nevertheless, he still gave Link a run for his rubies in one of the franchise’s most thrilling boss fights ever. The Hero of Time takes Agahnim on with the mighty Master Sword and his surprisingly useful bug-catching net. Since “A Link to the Past” is largely about the void between the Light World and the Dark World, it’s only appropriate that this battle crosses over from Hyrule Castle to Ganon's Tower, albeit at different parts of the game. No matter who’s turf they’re fighting on, though, Link will always come out triumphant – even if Agahnim pulls out all the stops for the second fight.

“The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” (1998) The Shadow Temple is among the most foreboding dungeons Link has ever ventured through. Things get especially unsettling as Link falls down a hole and lands on a giant drumhead. As two disembodied hands are revealed, it becomes clear that you’re in the presence of – drumroll please – the Phantom Shadow Beast. Bongo Bongo spends much of the fight lurking in the dark – unless you take a peak through the lens of thruth that is. As creepy as he may be, he’s nothing after a few stunning shots to the hands. After that, you’ll neeeever guess where you have to shoot him to take him down..

“The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask” (2000) “Majora’s Mask” is one of the strangest “Zelda” titles to say the least. Although he’s one of the more straightforward bosses in the game, he’s also the most innovative. A masked machine monster, Goht is as daunting as a Trojan horse and as rambunctious as a mechanical bull. This boss fight plays like a race with Goht stampeding around in circles and Link utilizing his Goron mask to catch up. It makes for a one-of-a-kind battle that’s every bit as thrilling as a game of “F-Zero” or “Mario Kart.” One small detail, in the 3DS remaster a large eye was added to the back of his neck, allowing Link use his Bow to deliver attacks rather than his sword.

“The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword” (2011) Apparently even almighty spirits like Levias aren’t immune to parasites. When the grotesque Bilocyte assumes control of the Sky Spirit, it’s up to Link to provide a remedy. Although Bilocyte is a worthy adversary, what elevates this boss fight to a whole new level of majesty is its setting. Riding on top of a whale-like creature while flying through the great sky is nothing short of exhilarating. Unlike the other entries on this list, this boss battle doesn’t take place at the end of a dungeon, but the sheer scale of the battle seals its place in the history books. Once Bilocyte is defeated, though, you’ll feel like the king of the world.

“The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds” (2013) How do you make Ganon more badass than he already is? Well, combining the beast with the cunning Yuga is pretty good start. In “A Link Between Worlds,” two of Hyrule’s most devious foes merge together for one enthralling final battle. It feels a lot like the climax from “A Link to the Past,” but even bigger and better. Matters get especially inventive during the battle’s second phase as Yuga Ganon blends into the wall, becoming a picture that’s worth more than a thousand words. Utilizing both 2D and 3D gameplay, this is definitely the best of both worlds.

“The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” (1998) Where Dark Link was the final boss in (xref) “Zelda II,” he’s downgraded to sub-boss in “Ocarina of Time.” Despite this demotion, Dark Link gets a 3D upgrade here and emerges mightier than ever. A battle that pits Link against his own reflection, the doppelganger will copy almost all of your attacks. While Dark Link is a master of mimicking, he’s fortunately no match for your Megaton Hammer. It’s one of the most simplistic “Zelda” battles while also being one of the most inspired and thought provoking. It’s furthermore a literal battle between the light side and the dark side.

“The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess” (2006) Stallord may be a fossil, but he’s far from obsolete. A massive dragon skeleton, this colossus is every bit as fearsome as he looks. Yet another boss battle that makes impeccable use of its environment, Link must use his spinner to surf around the around the room and break Stallord’s back. The ancient beast won’t go down that easily, though, as his 2nd phase really gets the adrenaline pumping. It’s like a rollercoaster with the stakes constantly rising higher and higher. Although Link comes close to losing his own head, he ultimately sends Stallord to his final resting place.

“The Legend of Zelda: ( … wait for it … wait for it …) Twilight Princess” (2006) Link has had numerous unforgettable confrontations with Ganondorf. While we easily could have included the final fights from “Ocarina of Time” (xref) or (xref) “The Wind Waker,” the Great King of Evil has never appeared more devilish than in “Twilight Princess.” This battle has one incredible set piece after another, from Zelda being used a puppet, to Ganondorf turning into Ganon, to a horseback chase, All of which culminates into the final one on one sword duel with the Dark Lord. In short, it’s everything one could want from a “Zelda” climax.

“The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword” (2011) Reminiscent of a demon out of Buddhism, Koloktos is one of the best-looking “Zelda” bosses ever designed, not to mention one of the most creative. He’s equipped with six arms, and is smart enough to protect his weak spot, thus getting to this ancient automaton’s heart seems nearly impossible. Things only appear more futile once he emerges with a set of legs. Link’s own sword may not be able to get the job done, but there’s fortunately a way to turn Koloktos’ own weapons against him, and boy is it satisfying. “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” (1998) Our top spot goes to two great bosses for the price of one. The Sorceress Sisters; Kotake and Koume encompass the powers of fire and ice. The two can work quite well together, particularly when they unite to become Twinrova. Seeing how they are technically polar opposites, however, Link is able to turn them against each other. Our hero may tear the gruesome twosome apart, but the sisters are left stuck together forever in the end. What a shame. They were only 400 years old…or were they 380? Do you agree with our list?
