Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the longest-running, high-quality TV shows that are still airing, excluding game shows, reality TV, and news shows.

#10: “It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia” (2005-)

For over 20 years, this hilarious show has continued to entertain dedicated sitcom fans and curious newcomers. Focusing on a bunch of self-centered misfits running an Irish bar, “IASIP” thrives on blowing everyday life out of proportion. The gang’s antics range from humorous to cringey and sometimes downright offensive. Yet the show’s hailed as one of the finest sitcoms ever, consistently delivering fresh episodes that stay true to its unfiltered charm. While many sitcoms have come and gone, “IASIP” reigns as the longest-running live-action comedy series. Along the way, it even won a Satellite Award in 2011 and People’s Choice Award in 2016. Say what you will about it, but there’s no denying its legendary status.

#9: “Grey’s Anatomy” (2005-)

Back in 2005, this medical series hit the scene with the right mix of drama, emotional depth, medical mysteries and unforgettable characters. From there it quickly became a must-watch, praised by both critics and fans for its gripping storyline centered on its ensemble of compelling characters. Over time, the show shocked viewers by killing off fan-favorites like Derek Shepherd, which didn’t sit well with many. While recent seasons have been criticised for being melodramatic, the series remains a popular choice, even ranking 10th in on-demand viewership in 2023. Beyond its enduring appeal, “Grey’s Anatomy” also catapulted stars like Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh and Katherine Heigl to fame. Although it continues to air, many will agree that nothing beats its early days.

#8: “NCIS” (2003-)

Starting off as a spin-off of “JAG,” this CBS drama has long eclipsed its predecessor to become one of the greatest cop shows ever made. Spanning over 21 seasons, it follows the special agents of NCIS as they solve mysterious cases. But the show’s charm lies in more than just its intriguing plots. Its well-developed characters, their heartwarming relationships, and occasional humorous twists truly set it apart. While the departure of fan-favorites like Gibbs left a bitter taste, “NCIS” endures by reinventing itself with the times while staying true to its roots. For dedicated fans, it’s the ultimate comfort food that never gets stale. Will it ever end? Maybe not- and some fans wouldn’t have it any other way.

#7: “Family Guy” (1999-2003; 2005-)

Despite years of criticisms and controversies, Seth MacFarlane’s brainchild continues to thrive. Set in a fictional Rhode Island town, it follows the misadventures of the dysfunctional Griffin family. Brash and unapologetically edgy, the show takes on sensitive issues with humor best suited for adults. Although it was cancelled in 2002, Fox revived it and hasn’t looked back since. One major feat it’s achieved is becoming the first animated series to earn an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Comedy since “The Flintstones.” It has also spawned numerous tie-ins like the “Star Wars” parody trilogy. While some say its spark is gone, “Family Guy” remains worthy of praise. Also worth mentioning is “American Dad,” another bizarrely hilarious MacFarlane hit that’s still running.

#6: “Law & Order: SVU” (1999-)

As long as real-life crimes continue to shock the world, “SVU” may never run out of material for compelling storylines. With many of its 500 plus episodes inspired by real cases, the show keeps its detectives busy with fascinating mysteries to solve. This “Law & Order” spin-off hasn’t only outlived its parent show, but also hasn’t dimmed its lights ever since. A particularly admirable aspect is Mariska Hargitay’s continued presence as the lead since day one - a rare occurrence in television. But the show’s longevity isn’t its only flex. It is incredible how it stays fresh by tackling timely social issues while maintaining high-quality writing, gripping plots and great performances. Without a doubt, “SVU” is a top-tier series.

#5: “South Park” (1997-)

It’s remarkable how something that started back in 1997 can still be relevant today, without completely losing its essence. So how does “South Park” stay funny and clever for over 25 years? Perhaps it’s because Trey Parker and Matt Stone continue to steer the ship, expertly integrating contemporary issues into their creative storylines. Though not without its own flaws, this comedic goldmine isn’t just Comedy Central’s longest-running program - it’s animated satire at its finest. With five Primetime Emmy wins and a Peabody Award under its belt, this show has transcended mere popularity to become a cultural phenomenon that shows no signs of slowing down. It even spawned a successful 1999 film - even more evidence of its brilliance.

#4: “ The Simpsons” (1989-)

Like many great shows that overstay their welcome, “The Simpsons” may have lost some of its original charm, but its iconic reputation remains untouched. For decades, Homer, Bart, Marge, Maggie, and Lisa have kept us laughing with their outlandish adventures that appeal to all ages. More than just an animated sitcom, the Simpson family and the town of Springfield serve as tools for poking fun at society. As one of Fox’s biggest hits, its impact on pop culture is undeniable - after all, how many shows can claim to have shaped everything from catchphrases to couch gags? Even as time changes, this TV giant continues to attract viewers with its fresh ideas and quirky humor. So we totally get why it hasn’t ended yet.

#3: “Saturday Night Live” (1975-)

You can’t talk about legendary shows that have shaped American culture without mentioning this. Sure, it can be hit or miss at times, but “SNL” deserves credit for launching the careers of big names like Eddy Murphy, Will Ferrell, and Bill Murray. For those few unfamiliar with it, it’s a sketch show where guest hosts and cast members parody everything from politics to pop culture. Some sketches have even become feature films - how cool is that? With 84 Primetime Emmys (among many other awards) and countless A-listers gracing its stage, the show’s impact is massive. Even after more than 970 episodes, it seems “SNL” isn’t going anywhere. Even if it falters sometimes, we simply can’t forget the memorable nights it’s given us.

#2: “Sesame Street” (1969-)

Even if you’ve forgotten your school lessons, you can’t forget what you learned on “Sesame Street.” Since it premiered in the late 60s, it has been a beacon of learning for kids and - even adults. The lively street of Sesame, with Jim Henson’s Muppets, truly brought charm and personality like no other. Though it’s not in the spotlight as much these days, the fact that it’s still ongoing for more than 50 years says a lot about its quality. Once a staple in many households, “Sesame Street” has expanded into amusement parks, merchandise, a film series, and more. Let’s not forget its record-breaking achievement of 222 Emmys and 11 Grammy s- more than any kids show has won. Who can top that?

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

“Criminal Minds” (2005-20; 2022-)

Because This Procedural Drama Is One of CBS’s Biggest Shows

“Bob’s Burgers” (2011-)

Another Wholesome Hilarious Show That’s Still Ongoing

“Coronation Street” (1960-)

With Over 10,000 Episodes, This Remains The Ultimate Classic in Soap Opera History

“The Tonight Show” (1954-)

It’s Nearly 70 Years of Late-Night Laughs With Legendary Hosts

#1: “General Hospital” (1963-)

Premiering in 1963, this unending soap opera has delivered decades of heartfelt moments, spicy drama, and valuable lessons. Some of its golden moments may have faded from memory, but there’s no forgetting Luke and Laura’s 1981 wedding that pulled millions of viewers like no soap ever did. Apart from this iconic duo, this serialized drama introduced numerous characters we couldn’t help but root for. Though once a cornerstone of soap operas’ golden era, it struggles now to capture the attention of younger generations. Well, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea now, but it will always be remembered. Another memorable classic still in the game is “Days of Our Lives” even though it’s a bit chaotic these days.
