#10: Familicide
“Jessica Jones” (2015-)

By this point in the series, it had been well-established that not only was the villain Kilgrave rather full of himself, but he also had no qualms when it came to using his powers of persuasion to make people hurt themselves. Even his parents are no exception. In order to escape his confinement as well as get some revenge of his own, Kilgrave commands that his mother stab her own heart out and considers it justice. Throughout the season, he would also torment his father in cruel and sadistic ways, but the moment he kills his own mother was definitely the most brutal.

#9: Hello Jessica
“Jessica Jones” (2015-)

There may not be any blood, but this example of Kilgrave’s power just might be the most terrifying. While we had seen him in flashbacks and brief appearances beforehand, this was where he truly made his introduction, and what a sight it was. Not only does he hold an entire police station hostage, but he confesses that he is actually deeply in love with Jessica. His obsession combined with her trauma all leads to a truly unsettling atmosphere, and while the massacre is avoided, it leaves our heroine in utter disarray.

#8: I’ve Got You
“Luke Cage” (2016-)

For the most part, our favourite hero from Harlem spends as long as possible resisting the urge to use his powers for the greater good. However, when the likes of Cottonmouth and his organisation start cracking down, Luke can no longer ignore it, and he comes to the aid of his landlords as they are harassed by Cottonmouth’s thugs. Wiping the floor with them due to his immense strength and durability, he makes a promise to defend his community. In terms of a Marvel hero accepting the call to arms, this one is pretty damn epic.

#7: Penny and Dime
“Daredevil” (2015-)

By far one of the greatest aspects of Daredevil’s second season was the arrival of the vigilante, Frank Castle, known to the world as The Punisher. While he caused plenty of carnage on his one man war against the scum of Hell’s Kitchen, one of his most poignant scenes came after Daredevil rescued him from his mob captors. Seemingly on death’s door, Castle reminisces about his family and the last days leading up to their murders. As his soldier persona slowly breaks down, we get a glimpse of the tortured husband and father inside, especially when it comes to the subject of his daughter and her favourite book.

#6: You Embarrassed Me
“Daredevil” (2015-)

If you weren’t already unnerved by the massive frame and soft-spoken lethality of Wilson Fisk before, you will be after watching what happens when you make him angry. After one of the Russian mobsters ruins his date with the beautiful Vanessa, Fisk loses the gentlemanly conduct and unleashes the violent crime-boss as beats Antoly to a pulp before proceeding to remove his head via car door. It’s sudden, surprising and ever so brutal, demonstrating that not only does the Kingpin have the vast resources and intellect needed to take over Hell’s Kitchen, but when push comes to shove he will tear apart anyone who inconveniences him.

#5: Everybody Wants To Be The King
“Luke Cage” (2016-)

While our hero was struggling to find his place in the world, we were given a villain so compelling and absolute in his own little kingdom that he made for the perfect antithesis to Luke Cage. While we would later come to see that he too had his own inner conflict about the path he’d taken, our first glimpse at the character of Cottonmouth was that of a criminal who may be magnetic in personality but who’s very willing to dish out death. The best example of this comes from when he taunts, humiliates and then beats down the man who stole from him, all the while illuminated by a huge poster of the Notorious B.I.G.

#4: The Night Nurse Returns
“Jessica Jones” (2015-)

Claire Temple stole the show during her time in Daredevil as Matt Murdock’s confidant, emergency medic and tragic love interest, so to see her appear as an ally to Jessica Jones was just plain awesome. Not only did she save Luke’s life and share some gripping dialogue with Jessica, but became the first official sign that these Netflix shows were actually going to crossover one day. While it may only be a brief appearance, the Night Nurse once again saved the day by tending to the heroes.

#3: Crime and Punishment
“Daredevil” (2015-)

While his lament over the loss of his family broke our hearts, we couldn’t help but cheer when we finally got to see Frank Castle break some bodies. Imprisoned and unarmed in a corridor filled with prisoners who want to kill him, all Castle can do is fight his way out. And what a fight it is. Using literally anything he can get his hands on, he literally butchers every criminal that comes at him with all manner of makeshift weapons. It’s so vicious, so bloody and so epic that you have to start feeling sorry for the rest of the inmates at one point. No one messes with the Punisher.

#2: Smile
“Jessica Jones” (2015-)

After so many emotionally twisted confrontations, the way Jessica and Kilgrave’s ongoing battle finally comes to an end is as shocking as it is gratifying. With several hostages, including her sister Trish, under the control of her nemesis, things are looking pretty dire for Jessica, especially when it looks like Kilgrave has finally retaken control of her. While he’s left ecstatic, we’re left mortified at the prospect that she’s going back to her life as a puppet. That is, until she takes the opportunity to spring her trap, grabbing him by the neck and snapping it with one hand. Given how much Jessica had gone thorough up until this point…we’d say that snap was well-earned.

Before we reveal our number one pick, here are a few honourable mentions.

Power Man
“Luke Cage” (2016-)

Breaking the Bed
“Jessica Jones” (2015-)

Matt Meets Elektra
“Daredevil” (2015-)

#1: The Hallway
“Daredevil” (2015-)

There’s no red costume, there’s no Kingpin, there’s barely any dialogue, but this scene is not only the best that Daredevil has to offer but in its own right is cinematic magic. Severely injured, Matt Murdock finds himself outnumbered as he ventures into the hideout of a group of human traffickers in order to save a little boy. What follows is barrage of brutal beatdowns as Daredevil barely manages to overcome each of them. You feel every part of the struggle and the very real threat that he may not survive the encounter, while collectively breathing a sigh of relief as he carried that child to safety. Oh, and it’s all done in one take.
