Top 10 Binge Worthy Anime of the 2020s

Welcome to WatchMojo and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the top 10 most addictive anime to watch. For this list, we’ll be going over the anime series you won’t be able to look away from once you start. Is there an anime that stimulates your otaku senses? Let us know in the comments!

#10: “Kengan Ashura” (2019-)

Tournament-style fighting anime are all the rage – and for good reason! It’s match after match of various combat, involving strategy and no small amount of violence. “Kengan Ashura” distinguishes itself from the others through its 3D animation, bloody fights, and a sense of intrigue. Ohma and his manager Kazuo are dragged into the world of the Kengan Annihilation Tournament, a brutal gladiator sport put on by Japan’s wealthiest businessmen. Along with unraveling why they were entered in the first place, you’ll stay hooked by the visceral fight bouts!

#9: “Moriarty the Patriot” (2020-21)

Sherlock Holmes and anime tend to go hand in hand. But far less common are the stories centered on his nemesis. The series follows a young William James Moriarty as he begins his career of crime, and helping others get away with them, all in the name of taking down Britain’s class system. We also see his relationship with his brothers as well as first encounters with Holmes, along with the start of their legendary rivalry. The anime is a thrilling tale of mystery, revenge, and suspense that will keep you rooting for this most swaggiest of crooks.

#8: “Golden Kamuy” (2018-)

Historical series can be a tough sell sometimes, but this little golden nugget is unlike any you’ll come across. Set in Hokkaido in the early 20th century, we follow an indomitable soldier and a young native Ainu girl as they pursue a treasure tattooed on escaped convicts. The story examines a period of Japanese history that is rarely told, and gives insight into the Ainu people and their culture. While the story overall is best described as a sort of Western adventure, the tone can shift wildly, from intense action, to comedy and there are even frequent cooking segments! “Golden Kamuy” is a hidden treasure that you’ll want to pursue with just as much fervor as Sugimoto.

#7: “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure” (2012-)

Top 20 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Battles

Can a show be charisma incarnate? Yes, and it’s name is JoJo. An anthology about several generations of the Joestar bloodline, usually with the nickname “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure” is, fittingly, really weird. While muscular men and women battling supernatural evils with psychic projections is pretty standard fare, it’s the execution that makes it so compelling. Characters will do or say things that you’d never expect in a million years, which, in addition to creating some grade-A meme fodder. Plus, there’s a heaping helping of laughs, tragedy, and incredibly colorful animation to boot! Just prepare to see all life as one giant JoJo reference.

#6: “Higurashi: When They Cry” Franchise (2006-)

What a nice town! What pleasant characters! Wait…they’re going to do what to each other?! Higurahsi may seem like a slice-of-life anime but make no mistake – it contains some of the most brutal horror out there! These anime perpetually focus on the same cast of characters getting involved in various terrifying and brutal events. Questions about the town’s history and what’s going on are constantly raised, yet remain enticingly out of reach for longer than you’d think. If you can stomach the “what,” the ”why,'' then you’ll keep you coming back for more.

#5: “Baki” Franchise (2001-)

What do you get when you mix muscles, mayhem, and madness together? Probably something like “Baki.” This franchise follows the titular young man as he seeks to become stronger by fighting various foes in order to surpass his monstrously powerful jerk of a father. The many battles in these anime may not involve any overtly supernatural powers, but they’re certainly not grounded in reality! To the extent that it often borders on nonsensical at times. Featuring more muscles than a bodybuilding team per character and some of the most outlandish showdowns you’ll ever see, “Baki” will beat you into submission until you simply learn to love the craziness.

#4: “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” (2009-10)

Also in:

Top 10 Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Moments (Ft. Todd Haberkorn!)

This anime tops so many lists for good reason! While it begins as the story of two brothers trying to return their bodies to normal after their alchemist experiment goes awry, “Brotherhood” is a rabbit hole of epic proportions. Ed and Al’s journey sees them uncover a massive conspiracy with world-ending stakes, with dozens of unforgettable characters intertwining their fates with the Elrics. It doesn’t hold back on the emotional gut punches, but those who stick with it will find one of the grandest and most impressive anime the medium has ever produced. It’s a show made fullmetal.

#3: “Hunter x Hunter” (2011-14)

This may look like every other adventure series from the outset, but where they all go left, “Hunter x Hunter” goes North! Everything from characters, to fight scenes, to entire story arcs will swerve in unexpected directions that will constantly keep you on your toes, elevating Gon’s journey to find an absentee father into a sprawling saga of wild conflicts and top tier world building. “Hunter x Hunter” is a fine catch that will leave you scrambling for more. Who knows, maybe by the time you’ve finished it the manga hiatus will have ended.

#2: “Code Geass” (2006-08)

Also in:

Code Geass Vs Death Note

There may be mecha, and there may be high school drama, but this series is so much more than its genres. Focusing on the rise, turmoil and triumph of ultimate anime anti-hero Lelouch, Geass chronicles one vengeful man’s journey to take back what was stolen from him and bring about revolution, with the help of some mind-altering ocular abilities, of course. The setting may catch your attention, but what makes it so addictive is its political intrigue, complex lead, and blistering pace. Very few can hope to reach the heights of Zero, but he is the man who makes miracles.

#1: “Attack on Titan” (2013-)

Also in:

Top 20 Attack on Titan Moments

This thing has been a hot topic for almost a decade, and for very good reason! The story of a group of young soldiers battling titanic, humanoid creatures in a fantasy dystopia, this series took every beloved trope and polished to a bloodsoaked finish. Frequent character deaths. Shocking betrayals. Amazing action. All interwoven with a narrative that takes so many beautifully plotted twists that even now, anime-onlys are left breathless in anticipation as to what the final destination for Eren and the rest of humanity will be. Though the body count is undoubtedly going to be immeasurable.
