Top 10 Most Memed Shrek Moments Ever

Top 10 Most Memed Shrek Moments Ever
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
These "Shrek" memes are amazing. For this list, we'll be looking at scenes from the ogre's franchise that found new life online as highly shared jokes. Our countdown includes Farquaad Makes Fun of Someone, Shrek's Mud Bath, “Some of You May Die”, and more!

#10: Farquaad Makes Fun of Someone

“Shrek” (2001)

Although Shrek fell for Fiona after saving her from a dragon, he’s initially ready to let her get married to Farquaad. But thanks to donkey, the heroic ogre has a change of heart and disrupts the wedding. Lord Farquaad doesn’t hesitate to make fun of Shrek’s feelings in front of a public audience with an iconic quote. The image of the mean-spirited ruler pointing and laughing has been used to make fun of tons of people and inanimate objects. However, the ironic part of this hilarious meme is that Shrek does get with Fiona in the end. So, while Farquaad’s face and words can be used to make fun of a target, it also hints that the object of ridicule might triumph later on.

#9: Trumpet Fanfare

“Shrek 2” (2004)

Since Fiona’s mom and dad have plenty of skilled artists working for them, the duo could afford to send trumpet players to Shrek’s house. When the band arrives, a musician named Reggie gets a little too into his own playing. This quirky moment opened up a great opportunity for witty editors online. Instead of Reggie playing the movie’s original sounds, people could swap the audio out for a completely different trumpet track. Anything from instrumental versions of songs to “Spongebob” classics could be added to this clip. Thanks to the internet, Reggie’s five seconds of fame have become a very fun way to highlight our favorite trumpet moments. We wonder if Shrek would be a fan of any of the new musical remixes.

#8: Shrek’s Mud Bath

“Shrek Forever After” (2010)

Shrek can’t even relax without spawning a meme! During his fourth outing, the ogre tries to unwind in a mud bath before he’s suddenly interrupted. Naturally, people took the image of the shirtless Shrek and put their own spins on it. But it didn’t just stop at edits. Since Shrek was bathing in brown mud, ambitious bakers printed out the image and added it to their cakes. We’re not sure if the ogre’s presence makes their baked goods less or more appetizing to look at. But we’re positive that we’ll be seeing more of the muddy ogre around our screens for years to come.

#7: For Five Minutes!

“Shrek 2” (2004)

While Shrek and Fiona are traveling to the distant land of Far Far Away, donkey can’t help but relentlessly pester them. The cranky hero eventually loses it and tells his friend exactly how long he needs to stop doing annoying things. Shrek’s memorable five minutes quote helped people vent their own frustrations about a wide range of topics. Whether a company won’t stop making odd decisions or a person is just being too obnoxious, the ogre was there to scream some sense into them. Everyone who’s appreciated or given their take on this meme heavily related with Shrek…for at least five minutes.

#6: “Like That’s Ever Gonna Happen”

“Shrek” (2001)

The iconic opening of the first “Shrek” film sees the titular character reading a stereotypical fairy tale. Although he sounds earnest at first, he ends his narration by making fun of the fictional story with a sarcastic remark. Shrek’s skepticism set the tone for the movie and inspired many memes. Some of these original images follow the ogre’s cues and express doubt that a dream or a wish can come true. However, the meme can also become ironic if it shows off an event people were skeptical about but happened anyway. It’s impressive that one of the opening lines of the first movie could spawn a meme that can be used in so many contexts. This iconic piece of Shrek dialogue definitely has layers.

#5: Good Question

“Shrek” (2001)

At first glance, Fiona thought she had been saved by a dashing and classically handsome hero wearing an armored helmet. So when she discovers an ogre’s face underneath the metal, she has questions as to why he came. Shrek’s response to her confusion became the stuff of memes. Internet users have repeated the ogre’s two words to highlight situations they’d rather not talk about in detail. But if someone is genuinely ignorant of the real answer to a question, the meme works just as well. And it can even make fun of complex philosophical theories. Once again, Shrek’s words are the answer to our comedy needs.

#4: “That's Okay Buddy, We're From the Union.”

“Shrek 2” (2004)

One of the best jokes in the franchise went from flying over our heads as kids to becoming a fantastic gag. When Shrek is trying to see the Fairy Godmother quickly at her office, he gets past the secretary by pretending to be from the union. The ruse works so well that the employee throws out a complaint about insurance. Once more of the meme making audience became old enough to catch this joke, they put Shrek into more hilarious scenarios with different organizations. He’s essentially served as an undercover ogre for every franchise from Star Wars to the MCU. Shrek’s fantastic lie about unions really opened the door for great jokes.

#3: A Swampy Remix

“Shrek” (2001)
Sometimes an image alone can’t do a history-making scene justice. Fortunately, music made one of Shrek’s lines into a hilarious jam. After the ogre discovers that tons of fairy tale creatures were forced into his home, he has no choice but to yell out one question. While this line appeared in images, it achieved more popularity as a dance remix. Combining Shrek’s dialogue over various beats caused some youtube videos to get anywhere between hundreds of thousands to millions of views. While we don’t think every individual remixes is good enough to be played at a concert, the popularity these songs once achieved cannot be denied.

#2: “Some of You May Die”

“Shrek” (2001)

While Lord Farquaad’s actions are mostly played for laughs, he’s capable of some seriously dark acts too. Both his silly and malicious sides were perfectly captured at once when he addressed a group of would be warriors. After informing them that their mission to save Fiona is dangerous, Farquaad is very candid about how little he values their lives. This meme became championed by anyone who felt put off by a careless organization or boss. While the line is extreme, its humorous nature let a lot of people vent and laugh about how awful their supervisors could be. And the knowledge that Farquaad would be insulted by this meme is just icing on the cake.

#1: An All Star Entrance

“Shrek” (2001)

As soon as Shrek forcefully exited his outhouse with a classic Smash Mouth song in the background, a new green star was born. This was also a scene that would launch countless memes. Fans loved seeing Shrek burst into rooms with energy and poise. If people wanted to shake things up, they could replace the character with someone from a different franchise. But this meme got so popular that the “somebody once told me” text alone was enough to induce laughs. Since we can still hear this Smash Mouth hit every time we see one of these images over 20 years later, it’s safe to say that this meme left a big impact on us.
