Top 10 Most Viewed Video Game Trailers
Video games may not be a popularity contest, but if they were there would definitely be some clear-cut winners. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the top 10 most viewed video game trailers.
For this list, we’re only looking at trailers which are numerically the most viewed on YouTube, regardless of how good or popular the games themselves may or may not be.
There’s no shortage of highly regarded cinematics for League of Legends, but the “Twist of Fate” trailer from 2013 is the most popular one of all. Players get to see the characters they’ve grown to love in a slew of beautifully animated combat sequences, colorful and exciting enough to grab your attention. It begins with a simple one-on-one battle between Twisted Fate and Fiddlesticks, before evolving into the large-scale chaos seen at the end, with Garen and Tryndamere going head-to-head against each other and then against Annie’s ultimate Tibbers… until Tibbers is ultimately eaten by the monstrous Baron Nashor.
It’s the biggest gaming craze of 2017 and 18, and the views on the trailer for Fortnite definitely do the Battle Royale fad justice. It may just be a simple gameplay trailer showcasing the game’s core elements – where 100 players are dropped out of a flying bus and fight to be the last man standing, all while gathering building materials and powerful ordnance – but it also does a great job at showing off the wackiness you can get up to in the free-to-play Battle Royale mode. It has versatile landscapes, colorful graphics, and crazy weapons; what more could you ask for?
From one craze to another; in 2016, Pokémon GO! suddenly became your reason to get out of bed in the morning. Around the world friendships were being made and fun was being had by its 20 million daily users finally realizing their childhood dream of being a Pokémon trainer. The sense of joy and excitement this augmented-reality app created was perfectly captured by Nintendo’s epic 2015 trailer, which did well to build up the hype that made it such a huge success when it launched. Being able to interact with other people and the various Pokémon in the real world was a landmark this trailer celebrated.
Since the release of Grand Theft Auto III in 2001, Rockstar North has been one of the most celebrated game developers out there. It would be hard to argue that they’ve ever released a bad game, so when the fifth installment of the GTA series was announced fans went wild, all desperate to get a glimpse of the redesigned Los Santos nobody had seen since San Andreas. This trailer really put Los Santos and its environment, its graphics, and its cool cars at the forefront. It’s not hard to understand why it has more than 50 million views on YouTube.
TF2 has a memorable roster of playable characters, but none has a more amusing cinematic than the Medic. Released four years after the game initially was, Valve’s “meet the characters” series amassed a huge number of views, and this one topped them all. We see the Medic attempt to put the Heavy back together again, which involves removing his heart and then replacing it with a new souped-up heart before they go back into battle. It really cements the Medic’s personality as an unethical rogue doctor – but unfortunately, he’s the only doctor around, so you’re kind of stuck with him… and his pigeons.
It’s easily one of the best FPS franchises around, so when the official reveal trailer for Battlefield 1 dropped in 2016 people loved it. It’s become the most viewed trailer for a first-person shooter on the internet, with roughly 60 million views on YouTube, and has to be one of the most exciting video game trailers of all time. It perfectly captures the chaos and confusion of war as well as the fun of gaming, with dramatic dogfights, tanks in trenches, and an enormous, ominous zeppelin shown at the end. This, along with a pretty awesome remix of “Seven Nation Army”, got everyone well and truly hyped for Battlefield 1.
Not one, not two, but three Clash of Clans trailers have enough views to make it onto this list, ranging from 63 million views to 100 million views, which is roughly the same number of players the game itself has. While two of them are showing 360° virtual reality raids from the point of view of one of your own soldiers, the most viewed of all is a TV cinematic introducing the Hog Riders. In this amusing short we see one Rider calling out the others into battle. These other Hog Riders also happen to be doing humorous things, like taking a bath with their pigs, before riding into battle.
Combining 20th Century Fox’s and Rovio Entertainment’s two bird-related franchises into Angry Birds Rio, the much-loved Angry Birds trio are taken all the way to Brazil by smugglers because they’re an “exceptionally rare species.” But Nigel, the main villain of the movie, underestimates exactly how angry these birds in particular are. After escaping him, they make it their mission to free all the captured exotic birds – including Blu and Jewel – and defeat Nigel and his army of evil marmosets by shooting themselves out of slingshots, as per usual.
Fittingly, the second most viewed game trailer of all time belongs to the second best-selling game of all time. There’s not really a lot a trailer can say about Minecraft, besides the fact that you have infinite freedom to build whatever you want and share it with people around the world. Like the game’s core concept, the trailer is kept simple – short and sweet – appealing to all the kids who grew out of expensive Lego sets and want something a bit more challenging. You can do anything in Minecraft, and that’s exactly what this trailer gets across, a no-rules adventure.
It might be surprising to hear that the most-watched game trailer on YouTube belongs to a cell phone app, but Subway Surfers is a widely-played game on all portable devices. This trailer has some 360 million views, which is actually only a small fraction of the people who play it, and does a good job at explaining both the premise and the gameplay in under a minute. You play as one of a selection of hooligans caught for tagging a subway car as they try to escape from the inspector, making this endearing and fun-filled game more than just another endless runner.
