VOICE OVER: LY
Script written by Sadie Perkins

Sometimes, romance movies just don't end in the happiest way. Movies like Romeo+ Juliet, Moulin Rouge, Titanic, My girl, Ghost, The Fault in our stars, Harold and Maude, Love Story, Brokeback Mountain, Titanic and Wonder Woman end in deaths but the love they show in the films are a powerful reminder that love is powerful.

#10: Sam Wheat and Molly Jensen “Ghost” (1990)

Top 10 Movie Fates Worse Than Death

A unique entry on our list, this love story actually begins with death. After Sam is shot and killed by a mugger, he dies in his girlfriend Molly’s arms and spends the rest of this tear-jerker desperately trying to contact her to say his final goodbyes. As we watch both parties struggle to come to terms with what has taken place, the frustration and heartbreak they feel seeps into the audience and breaks our hearts. After using a psychic to get through to Molly and tell her how he truly feels, Sam is finally at peace and able to move on.

#9: Augustus “Gus” Waters and Hazel Grace Lancaster “The Fault in Our Stars” (2014)

This is a love story that goes far beyond typical teenage angst. After Gus and Hazel meet at a cancer support group, it doesn’t take them long to fall in love and begin dating. Working through their illnesses together, the two manage a relationship that is mature beyond their years. Part of what makes the end of this romance so difficult to watch is the fact that though Hazel is much sicker than Gus, his cancer ends up making an aggressive and unexpected return. Though the couple manages to squeeze as much as they can out of their final days together, watching young love be cut short is always tough to see.

#8: Harold Chasen and Dame Marjorie “Maude” Chardin “Harold and Maude” (1971)

A strange and mismatched partnership to begin with, this unique love story still managed to tug at our heartstrings and become a cult classic. After meeting at a stranger's funeral, the young Harold and nearly 80-year-old Maude begin to bond over their discussions of life and its inevitable end. Shortly after Harold falls in love with Maude and announces that he wants to marry her, she purposefully overdoses on sleeping pills in order to end her life on her own terms. As she fades away in the back of an ambulance, she departs Harold’s life with a few final words of wisdom.

#7: Jennifer “Jenny” Cavalleri and Oliver Barrett IV “Love Story” (1970)

Top 10 Best Jennifer Lopez Movie Performances

With sparks flying from the moment this couple meets, watching Jenny and Oliver fight to create a life together against all odds made their ending even harder to watch. Shortly after getting married and struggling to make ends meet, Oliver learns that Jenny has a terminal illness and is devastated. As the two spend Jenny’s final days together, she decides to forgo a trip to Paris in favour of spending more time with Oliver. In the quiet final moments of Jenny’s illness, all she asks is that Oliver holds her while she dies - a simple request that broke audiences’ hearts in two.

#6: Vada Sultenfuss and Thomas J. Sennett “My Girl” (1991)

In this innocent coming of age story, Thomas J. and Vada’s relationship was equal parts eccentric and heartwarming. Vada suffers from hypochondria and the inability to fit in, and forms a friendship with Thomas that soon blossoms into a sweet and adorable first crush. After attempting to retrieve Vada’s lost mood ring and being stung by bees, Thomas dies from a severe allergic reaction. Coping with a death as an adult is hard enough, but watching a child try to understand such a tragedy is just downright painful.

#5: Noah Calhoun and Allison “Allie” Hamilton “The Notebook” (2004)

As in any Nicholas Sparks movie adaptation (“A Walk to Remember” anyone?) we have to expect at least one of the main characters is going to die. The tale of Noah and Allie’s romance in “The Notebook” cumulated in one of the most heartbreaking closing scenes of all time. As an elderly Noah visits Allie, who is suffering from dementia, the couple exchanges a few tender words as they recall their younger days. They decide to lay together and die in their sleep before Allie can forget again. The peace these two share in their last moments proves that a love as strong as theirs can survive anything.

#4: Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar “Brokeback Mountain” (2005)

Also in:

Top 10 Jack Black Roles

The saddest part of this love story is the fact that both men knew it was doomed from the start. Only allowing their guards down when they are alone together in the mountains, Ennis and Jack’s repressed passion made for a turbulent but fiery relationship. Even after Ennis moves on and marries a woman, a surprise visit from Jack is enough to bring back the spark they used to share. Finally acknowledging that there’s no way they can ever be together, the men go their separate ways for good. It’s only when Ennis is told that Jack has been killed that he truly understands what he has lost.

#3: Christian and Satine “Moulin Rouge!” (2001)

Also in:

Top 20 Greatest Christian Bale Performances

A troubled love story told mostly through song, the tale of Christian and Satine’s hidden affair was just as deliciously dramatic as we’d expect from a Baz Luhrmann musical. As Christian, the penniless writer, falls madly in love with the talented performer Satine, the two are forced to keep their relationship behind closed doors in order to prevent arousing the suspicions of the nefarious Duke. Unfortunately, a love like theirs doesn’t do well kept in secret, and eventually they are thrust into the spotlight - literally. As Satine’s tuberculosis overcomes her in their final performance, the couple is finally able to mutually confess their love to each other.

#2: Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater “Titanic” (1997)

Also in:

Top 20 Greatest Christian Bale Performances

Regardless of whether or not you thought there was room on that door for Jack, this romance has one of the most infamous tragic endings of all time. After Jack and Rose meet aboard the doomed ship, it doesn’t take them long to realize that they’re meant to be. After the Titanic hits the iceberg and begins to sink, the couple agrees to never part, even when they’re forced to jump into the icy water. Spending their last moments fighting the cold and waiting for help, Jack makes Rose promise him that she’ll never let go of hope - even as she’s forced to let him go. Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few honourable mentions. Han Solo and Leia Organa “Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens” (2015) Steve Trevor and Diana Prince “Wonder Woman” (2017) Seth and Maggie Rice “City Of Angels” (1998)

#1: Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet “William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet” (1996)

This Shakespearean couple take the prize for the most tragic - and arguably unnecessary - unhappy ending ever take place in fiction. When Romeo is told that his love Juliet has died, he decides that it would be better to join her than to spend the rest of his life alone. We all know how this ends, with Juliet awakening just as Romeo takes the poison - but her decision to ultimately join him in death makes this one of the most ill-fated romances of all time. “West Side Story” was inspired by this classic tale, but twists the plot to offer a different, but equally devastating ending.
