Top 10 Movie Traps
VOICE OVER: Dan Paradis
Script written by Richard Bush.

It's a Trap! Whether it's a couple of expertly aimed paint cans, a hidden and poisonous snake or a giant rolling boulder, the movies have no shortage of exciting and diabolical traps to keep viewers on the edges of their seats. In this video, http://www.WatchMojo.com counts down our picks for the top 10 movie traps. For this list, we're focusing on movie moments where characters are caught off-guard by a cleverly concocted trap. However, we're leaving out ambushes, like “The Godfather” tollbooth scene. Also, we already have a Top 10 Saw Traps video, so we're excluding torture porn flicks as well.

#10: Laser Cuisinart
“Resident Evil” (2002)

In this zombie-infested epic, a defensive artificial Intelligence system known as the Red Queen quarantines the underground Hive research facility in order to stop the spread of the T-Virus. After a group attempts to infiltrate the Queen’s Chamber, she fights back with a series of lasers. Four commandos try to outsmart her, but as we all know, evil computers learn fast, and the result of that is one human waffle.

#9: The Auto-Destruct
“Star Trek III: The Search for Spock” (1984)

This trap is a vital sacrifice of gigantic proportions. With Kruge’s Klingons boarding the Enterprise, Kirk and his men wave a bogus white flag and pretend to surrender – meanwhile they sneakily activate the Enterprise’s self-destruct sequence. With more and more of the Klingon race piling on to the Starship, Kirk and company transport out of there, leaving their foes to perish.

#8: Rattlesnake Trap
“Hard Target” (1993)

When Jean-Claude Van Damme saves the gorgeous Yancy Butler from being attacked by a rattlesnake, he goes all MacGyver on us and constructs a trap out of the stunned reptile. An unsuspecting soldier is trumped by Van Damme’s classic trip wire maneuver, or in this case trip vine, which alerts the hidden snake. Let’s just say the soldier’s surprised when the creature launches itself at his face. Ouch.

#7: Rigged Ammo Box
“Platoon” (1986)

This trap reflects how brutal and unexpected the world of war can really be. When searching an abandoned hideout on patrol, two soldiers, Sal and Sandy, discover an ammunition box containing enemy maps. Although they take extra care to make sure the box isn’t rigged, they get complacent – which causes them to be caught out by an explosive booby trap.

#6: Spring Spear Trap
“First Blood” (1982)

Sylvester Stallone is a one-man army as John Rambo, and in this flick we delve into his expertise with guerilla survival tactics. One such tactic is to use booby traps to wound prey, which in this case is a series of police officers. In one incident, Rambo rigs a trip wire that sends a spear full of spikes flying into the legs of an unlucky victim.

#5: The Snake Suitcase
“Kill Bill: Vol. 2” (2004)

To get back at him for taking credit for The Bride’s murder, infamous Deadly Viper swordswoman Elle Driver sets up a transaction with her former teammate Budd. In exchange for a genuine Hattori Hanzō sword, she brings him $1 million – but she’s sure to leave Budd a nasty surprise buried in the bundles of cash – a deadly Black Mamba. If multiple snakebites to the face weren’t bad enough, Elle then describes how notoriously lethal the Black Mamba is, in true monologuing Tarantino style. But it all comes back to bite her in the end.

#4: Swinging Paint Cans
“Home Alone” (1990)

How can we forget “Home Alone” and its enjoyable, yet potentially deadly, house of tricks? With Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, flying solo in the house and two thieves trying to get in, the eight-year old must fortify his abode with a series of improvised traps. After battling their way in, the thieves face the staircase, where Kevin’s waiting with some swinging paint cans, which smack them square in the schnoz.

#3: Falling Boulders
“The Goonies” (1985)

Goonies never say die. With both the Goonie gang and the infamous Fratelli mob after One Eyed Willie’s treasure, the race is on. When navigating through the labyrinthine caves, the gang encounters a number of “booty traps,” set by the deceased pirate in an attempt to stop all who try to reach his treasure. One classic buccaneer trap in particular is the tumbling boulders, which catches both the Goonies and Fratellis off guard.

#2: Crushing Log
“Predator” (1987)

While on a rescue mission based in guerilla territory, a group of elite soldiers ends up as trophies for a strategic and murderous alien. After it picks off Schwarzenegger’s entire team one by one, Arnie sets up a series of traps to try and trump the beast. In a tense scene that delivers one of Arnie’s most memorable lines, he finally lures the creature into a trap and crushes it with a hanging log.

Before we unveil our top movie trap, here are a few honorable mentions:
- The Trojan Horse “Troy” (2004)
- Landmines “The Hunger Games” (2012)
- House Bomb “Speed” (1994)

#1: Boulder Scene
“Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981)

Archeologist Indiana Jones is tiptoeing through a bobby-trapped crypt in an attempt to take an ancient gold idol. When he switches the treasure for a bag of sand, he thinks he’s home free. Boy, is he wrong. A few seconds later, the walls of the tomb start crumbling around him, and he’s met with flying arrows and the legendary rolling boulder. This is nail-biting cinema at its best.
