#10: Key West, Florida
If you’re looking for a bit of fun in the sun that’s fido-friendly, you’re hard pressed to find a better destination than Key West in Florida. This island city, just 90 miles north of Cuba, is a paradise, and your dog will agree. People like to travel there with their pets, and the businesses have clearly caught onto this fact. Dog-friendly hotels abound, and many restaurants will be only too happy to have both you and your canine pal. Between the Key West Dog Beach, dog-friendly dolphin tours, and parks, you and your pooch will be overwhelmed by the options. Dogs are even welcome at the aquarium and botanical gardens!
#9: Sedona, Arizona
Whether you’re on a road trip with your four-legged friend or simply looking to get away for a little canine quality time, this southwestern city and its surrounding attractions guarantee a good time for all parties involved. Slide Rock State Park, a major wilderness attraction in the area thanks to its natural water slide, is dog-friendly, and the perfect place for you and your little buddy to play amongst Arizona’s red sandstone. Just note that the slide and bathing area is human-only, so be sure to bring plenty of water for you pooch. With so many natural areas to explore, you’ve got plenty of choices. Add to that dog-friendly wine tours and you’re all set!
#8: Chicago, Illinois
A major city might not be the first place you think of when looking to hit the road with your pup, but Chicago has made a name for itself as one seriously dog-friendly city. Yes, there are numerous hotels and countless restaurants that will be only too happy to welcome you and your dog, but there are also plenty of pet-specific activities that make Chicago feel like a standout doggie destination. There are various dog beaches and dog-friendly beaches, more dog parks than you can shake a stick at, and even canine-accommodating sightseeing companies.
#7: Lake George, New York
Spring, summer or fall, this freshwater wonderland is the perfect natural aquatic getaway for any dog/human pairs looking to reconnect with nature and get back to their roots. The lake itself is unspoiled and boasts a dog beach, plus, with dog-friendly cruises and kayak rentals, you and your dog can even get out on the water if that’s your sort of thing. Of course, no natural space this alluring can go entirely untouched, so for any human or canine travellers who prefer the finer things in life, rest assured that there are plenty of comfortable accommodations and local culture to take in as well.
#6: Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada
Though water-loving humans and hounds might prefer to visit this Canadian gem in the warmer months, Alberta’s Lake Louise offers something for man and man’s best friend all year round. Simply sitting and relaxing beside this stunning body of water is activity enough, but in the off-chance that you or your pup are more active, there are also dog-friendly hiking trails, among other activities, depending on the seasons. There are many pet-friendly hotels, some of which even offer doggy babysitting services in case you need a little alone time. Just don’t forget to bring a leash, as they are mandatory in Banff National Park.
#5: San Diego, California
Like Chicago, San Diego is a metropolis that knows the value of attracting tourists who like to travel with their dogs. It’s rare to walk down a commercial street without seeing numerous businesses with bowls of water outside for passing dogs - just to make sure you know that both you and your canine companion are welcome. It’s a city with a vibrant culture and delicious food scene, but one that also serves as a great launchpad for nature enthusiasts and beach bums, and thankfully, dogs are welcome in more places than not. In short…. San Diego is a city that has gone to the dogs - and we mean that in a good way!
#4: Sonoma County, California
Wine and dog lovers rejoice, we’ve found your promised land! Sonoma County is one of California’s best places to visit vineyards and do wine tasting tours, but it further sets itself apart from the pack with its abundance of pet-friendly establishments and activities. Amidst these sun-kissed rolling hills, you and your pet could have the vacation of a lifetime without ever setting foot in a vineyard, but let’s be honest, when in wine country… you’re going to want to drink some wine! Thankfully, there are more dog-friendly wineries than we can reasonably list here.
#3: Cannon Beach, Oregon
Regardless of whether or not your dog likes to swim, it’s pretty safe to assume that they enjoy a day at the beach and the opportunity to at least get their paws wet. And in terms of west coast beach communities outside of California, Cannon Beach is pretty much the undisputed winner when it comes to dog-friendliness. With a population of under 2,000 people but a whole lot of character and charm, Cannon Beach is place for people who love people AND people who love dogs. It’s doggy heaven on earth.
#2: Austin, Texas
Sure… keep Austin weird. But most importantly, let’s keep it one of the most dog-friendly cities in America! This cultural hub in Texas is a go-to spot for great food, craft beers and cocktails, flea markets and more. Though it’s not the only North American city to boast so much culture, there are few that let you do so much of it with your dog in tow. Dog-friendly restaurants abound, and many breweries invite dogs on the patio with bowls of water so that you and your four-legged friend can beat the heat together. With hiking trails in the surrounding area and many dog friendly accommodations, Austin will make you and your pup feel most welcome.
#1: Carmel-by-the-Sea, California
Honestly, the California coast as a whole makes for a great dog-friendly road trip, but even within this context, Carmel-By-The-Sea stands out as absurdly canine-accommodating. Where do we even begin? There’s an off-leash beach, an off-leash hiking park, plenty of walking paths, a booming dog-friendly restaurant scene and shopping district. Respect the leash laws where they apply, clean up after your dog, and you’ll have the best human and dog vacation ever! Neither you nor your dog is going to be willing to leave when it comes time to say goodbye. Don’t say we didn’t warn you, and happy travels - to both you and your furry friend!
