Top 10 Primary Futurama Characters
This popular sci-fi show from the creator of the Simpsons has been blasting viewers to the far future since 1999. Cancelled and brought back, only to be cancelled again, we felt it was time to give it its due. Not only a hilarious cartoon series, it's given us some of television's most memorable characters. Join http://www.WatchMojo.com as we celebrate one of the best animated series ever by counting down the top 10 primary Futurama Characters. Just to be clear, this list is only for the main characters, as the zany secondary characters deserve their own list.
#10: Lord Nibbler
Blasting off our countdown is the tiny alien with a massive appetite, discovered by the planet express crew. A cute creature that wears a cape, has three eyes craps Dark Matter, he was adopted by Leela. As it turned out, Nibbler was really an intelligent member of an ancient alien race, on an undercover mission to protect the universe! His surprisingly deep voice never gets old, especially since people frequently forget that he can talk! Best of all, it’s provided by Frank Welker, the man behind Transformers’ Megatron!
#9: Amy Wong, PH.D
Voiced by Lauren Tom, Amy is the long time pink sweat suit wearing intern at Planet Express who is so cute she had to have a cuteness reduction surgery. And that’s despite childhood obesity! Not so secret kept on staff because she share the same blood type as the professor, her often stem from her relationship with Kif and her wealthy, meddling parents.
#8: Kif Kroker
A lieutenant in the Doop, Maurice LaMarche voices this Amphibian-like alien, and unfortunate assistant to Zap Brannigan. Although Kif is often the smartest guy in the room, his stammering nature and lower rank mean he’s frequently plays doormat to his commander, Zap Branigan. He literally doesn’t have a spine, but figuratively grows one from time in order to stick up for or protect his girlfriend Amy.
#7: Hermes Conrad
This Jamaican bureaucrat and accountant for planet express, voiced by Phil LaMarr, is the Professor’s closest friend. A former Limbo champ, Hermes is best know for his countless hilarious catchphrases and very un-Rastafarian attitude. Though he’s a hard worker, he makes no effort to hide his displeasure with his workers, specifically, Zoidberg!
#6: Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth
The owner of Planet Express, this extremely elderly, deranged, senile and delightfully unpredictable old man, whose voiced by Billy West, is always the bearer of so-called good news. The distant nephew of Fry, putting it in simple terms, he’s a genius with a passion for inventions, specifically those that are a danger to Earth and the galaxy. If there’s one thing he can be counted on, it’s a steady stream of suicidal missions for his crew.
#5: Turanga Leela
The captain of the Planet Express crew, Katey Sagal voices this mutant with big boots and poor depth perception. Another character who’s cursed with being the smartest in the room, she’s also the most fierce and capable in a fight. The love interest of Fry, her affection mostly goes to her pet Nibbler, while she pursued endlessly, and shamelessly, by Zapp Brannigan.
#4: John A. Zoidberg
Voiced by Billy West, Zoidberg is the resident lobster doctor at Planet Express, who gave up comedy to practice medicine. While he’s not good at either, being both painfully unaware of human physiology and totally lacking in self-awareness, he’s still unintentionally hilarious. Whether it’s jokes about how poor or unloved he is, or regularly going unappreciated by everyone, this dumpster diving crustacean is our favorite cultural parody in television. You know what we’re talking about…
#3: Zapp Brannigan
Finally right?! Everyone’s favorite parody of captain Kirk, this egotistical General of the Doop rides his highly questionable status to cause unintentional havoc at every turn. He’s pretty much a textbook chauvanist wrapped in arrogance, incompetence, vanity and velour! While he’s not sending brave men to their deaths, he’s often found tormenting his first mate Kif or making another unsuccessful attempt for Leela’s heart. The voice? That’s Billy West again…
#2: Bender Bending Rodriguez
Otherwise known as Bending Unit 22, this Tijuana made bot is the show’s most consistent source of comedic vigor. Voiced by John DiMaggio, his unabashedly selfish, narcissistic persona provides Futurama with a decent portion of its edginess! While he’s all about gambling, smoking and hooker bots, his sinful nature is more than a lifestyle choice, as he’s powered by alcohol! Bender is central to the show thanks to being friends, co-workers and roomies with Fry.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
Mom and Sons
Scruffy
Leo and Inez Wong
Calculon
#1: Philip J. Fry
Topping our list is the 20th century delivery boy turned 30th century delivery boy! Voiced by Billy West, this central character is the fish out of water simpleton who was accidentally cryogenically frozen. We love Fry because he wasn’t even intelligent for his own time, so much so that he fits right in with a mad scientist, alcoholic robot and lobster doctor. While the protagonists of sit coms are often dim witted, Fry brings a whimsical innocence to his idiocy that encapsulates the charm of the show as a whole. If only he could convince Leela of how special he really is.
