#10: Purgatory
“Mass Effect 2” (2010)
You can’t get any further from civilization than this maximum-security spaceship. Shepard and co travel to the Purgatory to recruit Jack, a dangerous biotic with an illustrious criminal history but soon discover that the prisoners on board are not the only threat. It quickly transpires that Warden Kuril is your stereotypical corrupt prison official and intends to make a quick buck out of keeping his high profile guests in exchange for a hefty ransom. He seems to forget that he is dealing with Commander Shepard and an all-out riot results in the warden’s death and the eventual capture of a rampaging Jack.
#9: Jailhouse Judgment
“House of the Dead: Overkill – Extended Cut” (2011)
After tracking Caesar and Varla through carnivals, trains and swamps, G and Isaac finally end up at a high-security prison under control of the bizarre Warden Clement Darling. You then treat yourself to an interactive tour of the building utterly ravaged by the mutant outbreak while painting the walls red in some intense rail shooter action. It turns out that Darling not only masterminded the whole disaster to save his mother, he also has an incestuous relationship with the same parent. You’re given little time to dwell on this sickening revelation as he escapesand sets Brutus, a gigantic monster, on you for even more gory blasting.
#8: Escaping UNATCO
“Deus Ex” (2000)
This FPS teases you with a number of unexplained mysteries surrounding the world’s current crisis and it is up to JC Denton to figure out who or what is pulling the strings of the game’s events. After discovering that your employers UNATCO and secret group Majestic 12 are in cahoots, Denton switches sides, resulting in his imprisonment in a UNATCO facility. Aided by a hacker named Daedalus, you battle a number of troops while finding the occasional ally who will give you crucial information on how to escape and the odd tidbit about how deep Majestic 12’s conspiracy runs.
#7: Guardia Castle Jail
“Chrono Trigger” (1995)
Crono’s first taste of time travel in this classic action RPG title leaves him in some hot water. He is thrown in the jails of Guardia Castle after he is framed for kidnapping Princess Nadia when he actually saved her after a time travelling mishap. He tricks his guards into opening his cell door, scales the towering walls as winds howl and even battles a dragon tank when reunited with his good friend Lucca. They eventually meet back up with Marle, who is also the Princess, and the trio make a haphazard escape to thousands of years in the future, beginning the events of the game as they try to save the earth.
#6: Irenicus’ Dungeon
“Badlur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn” (2000)
One of the greatest RPG titles ever is set up by this sequence that takes place in the lair of Jon Irenicus, a nefarious elf who is experimenting on your character and many other unfortunate creatures. It isn’t the quickest start to a game ever but that gives you ample time to explore the variety of areas that are indicative of the depth you will enjoy for the rest of the adventure. Whether you’re in the laboratory, the library or the crystal room there is something to discover or a side quest to complete. Be careful of the traps however, Irenicus isn’t going to make it easy for you to sneak out.
#5: Vorkuta
“Call of Duty: Black Ops” (2010)
We don’t get to see the planning of this daring escape but straight away we learn that this is something Viktor Reznov and Alex Mason have had in the works for a long time. The pair motivate a band of prisoners to get away from this labor camp by any means necessary whether that be with a rock, knife, catapult or harpoon gun. One of the best levels of the game, if not the whole series, the mission is never drawn out, always maintaining a relentless pace that is needed to make this desperate bid for freedom successful. You are more vulnerable than ever before in a COD game but it never skimps on utter improvisational destruction.
#4: Gerudo Fortress
“The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” (1998)
This fortress belongs to the all-female gang of thieves and they are intent on letting no men, aside from their leader Ganondorf of course, into the ranks of their mischievous group. Not only is it a jail for the male carpenters you are charged with saving, it can be also be your temporary home if you get caught by any of the guards dotted around the barricades. You’ll need plenty of arrows to stealthily avoid capture and even more persistence to make it round this hideout that can be infuriatingly repetitive. It’s worth the effort however as the Gerudo award you an honorary membership for your sterling work as a warrior.
#3: Infiltrating Ellsworth Federal Penitentiary
“Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Double Agent” (2006)
Following the death of his daughter, stealth agent extraordinaire Sam Fisher is in desperate need of a pick up. What better way to get him back on track than to send him undercover in aprison to gain a position with terrorist organization John Brown’s Army. There are two different versions of this game that have varying details on how Fisher and JBA member Jamie Washington escape. There are commonalities however with obvious references to Shawshank Redemption and Fisher being given the full prisoner treatment in a facility based upon Leavenworth Penitentiary. Both versions have the same end result but it’s definitely worth experiencing the different paths to freedom.
#2: Butcher Bay
“The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay” (2004)
If anyone is going to escape a prison whose security is billed as ‘Triple-Max’, it is going to be souped-up ex soldier Richard B. Riddick. Combining stealth and action elements, he makes a number of escape attempts but is foiled a couple of times and is sent further into the depths of this notorious facility. There is barely any need to control the inmates as if they do escape, there is a massive desert to traverse and these conditions contribute to an intimidating atmosphere that makes you want to explore. Set before the events of the films in the franchise, it perfectly fleshes out Riddick’s criminal past.
Before we reveal our top pick, let’s take a look at some honorable mentions.
Jailbreak
“Sly 2: Band of Thieves” (2004)
Irithyll Dungeon
“Dark Souls III” (2016)
Prison Escape
“Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” (2006)
High Security Compound
“Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft” (1998)
Zordoom Prison
“Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction” (2007)
#1: Entire Game
“Batman: Arkham Asylum” (2009)
One of the most iconic locations from the comic books is given the video game treatment and has never looked better. Nailing a balance between realism and unnerving horror, the asylum provides the platform to blend brawler and stealth components, as well as being the backdrop to a compelling story. It is being used as a makeshift prison and now houses a selection of the Dark Knight’s greatest foes. He comes up against Scarecrow, Harley Quinn, Bane and the Joker who has plans to take over Gotham using an army of super-Banes. It is possibly the best superhero game ever and would not have reached the same heights without it’s expertly created environment.
