She has lived a real-life Cinderella story, and done it all in the public eye. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the Top 10 Reasons Meghan Markle Is a Badass.
For this list, we’re looking at all the reasons we love the Duchess of Sussex.
#10: She’s Mixing Things up With the Monarchy
If you’ve paid attention to the news in early 2020, you’ll have seen that Meghan and Prince Harry have made an official decision to cut down on their roles as senior royal family members, and to make a partial move to North America. But this isn’t the first time that Meghan has been part of making changes to how the royal family typically operates. Back in 2018, shortly after her wedding, reports at People magazine quoted an insider, who said, “She's not going to want to be a quiet princess and simply open hospitals or cut ribbons.” In the time since, she has lived up to that sentiment in a myriad of ways.
#9: Her Fashion Sense
Before Meghan Markle became a member of the royal family, she started a lifestyle blog called The Tig, where fashion was a major focus. By the time she was in the spotlight as Prince Harry’s girlfriend, the fashion media had exploded with appreciation for her sense of style, and the way she modernized the typical wardrobe of a royal. She never fails to put her own spin on things and to push the boundaries of what’s accepted. Of course, the world waited with bated breath to see which wedding dress design she would choose for her 2017 nuptials, and she did not disappoint. Markle’s decision to go with Givenchy’s Clare Waight Keller was no accident, respecting her place in clothing industry history as a female artistic lead of 3 fashion houses.
#8: Her Humanitarianism
We all know that the royal family undertakes plenty of humanitarian work as part of their official duties, and while Meghan Markle has certainly participated in that, she also has a history of doing charitable tasks before becoming enmeshed in the institution. In 2014, she traveled with United Service Organizations to both Afghanistan and Spain. Two years later, she was appointed as a global ambassador for World Vision Canada, and the same year wrote a piece for Time magazine on menstrual health - approaching the lack and fear of discussion of it head on.
#7: Her Talent for Public Speaking
Markle doesn’t only have a talent for the written word. If you’re a fan of Meghan, you surely know that she got her start in acting, most notably working on drama “Suits”. So she was well positioned to be a great public speaker, since she already had plenty of practice delivering lines! Since becoming a royal, she has given several notable speeches and each one seems better than the last. We wish we could command a crowd like she can! What’s always clear is she cares about what she’s saying, and that it comes from a fundamentally truthful place. PopSugar editor Stephanie Nguyen said, “I love watching videos of her speak, whether it's an old interview from her acting days or a recent royal engagement — she's mesmerizing!"
#6: She’s a Good Match for Harry
For years, Harry was seen as something of the wild child of the royal family, but it seems that his relationship with Meghan has changed him - for the better. From just a health and wellness perspective, she whipped him into shape by encouraging him to get into yoga and green juice. She even got him to quit smoking! Anyone who has been paying attention will also notice that the prince has appeared to be much happier since he and Meghan got together, smiling more frequently and seeming more lighthearted. They also present a united front whenever they appear in public together, and especially when speaking about their son or each other.
#5: She's Hard-Working
Meghan Markle once wrote for ELLE magazine, “I've never wanted to be a lady who lunches; I've always wanted to be a woman who works.” When she penned that phrase, she probably never thought she’d become part of a generations-old tradition of ladies who lunch! But both before becoming a royal and since, Meghan has displayed an entrepreneurial spirit. The decision to have more of a social media presence with @sussexroyal on Instagram was no doubt due to her influence. As each post demonstrates, the couple splits their time as patrons of many causes and organizations - and Meghan STILL managed to work on a fashion collection in 2019. Now that she and Harry are attempting to strike out on their own, there have been whisperings of business deals, including one with Disney. Fingers crossed!
#4: She Breaks Royal Protocol
The British royalty is known for being somewhat uptight and strict, but Meghan has made her own set of rules. She has broken royal fashion norms by going barefoot at the beach (scandalous!) and foregoing tights with her dress, as well as daring to wear dark nail polish. This all sounds VERY specific, we know. She spoke at her own wedding reception, which royal brides have never done before. And perhaps most importantly, she has displayed a sense of warmth by often hugging people she meets, which is usually a no-no. She kneels to greet children - something Harry’s mother, Diana, did.
#3: She's a Proud Feminist
When Meghan was just 11 years-old, she took a stand after seeing a commercial for dish soap that she thought was sexist, since it implied that only women did dishes. She wrote to the company, and actually got them to change the commercial. Ever since, she has been open about her feminist beliefs, starting when she was working as an actress and continuing today. While many women in the public eye seem to employ feminist values, they still seem reluctant to use the word, but Markle has said, she is “proud to be a woman and a feminist.”
#2: How She Handles Racism
Meghan’s father is white and her mother is African-American, which is a fact that many decided to latch on to in the wake of the announcement that she would be joining Britain’s royal family. Since entering the spotlight, Meghan has been the victim of racism, from online bullying to discrimination in the press. Through it all, she has remained poised and has responded with as much grace as she could muster. Many have speculated that this racism is one of the contributing factors in Harry and Meghan opting to forego living in the United Kingdom full time.
#1: She’s Unabashedly Herself
What all of this amounts to is a woman who does things her own way. While she could have easily followed the rules, obeyed decades-old royal protocol and kept quiet about issues that matter to her, she’s done the opposite every time something was important. She’s not there to disturb the peace for no reason; rather, when she holds a conviction, she sticks to it. Her ability to stay kind in the face of all the unfairness that comes with being in the spotlight, to using that spotlight to highlight causes and people she wants to raise up, is nothing short of exceptional.
