Good things come to those who wait! Today, we're looking at the best releases coming to and leaving Netflix in October 2019.

#5: “Scream 4” (2011)

Top 10 Best Scream Queens Characters

Leaving: October 7th, 2019 The first “Scream” was groundbreaking. It was simultaneously a love letter, takedown and deconstruction of the slasher genre. By the third instalment however, the franchise had seemingly run out of insights to offer; the franchise appeared doomed to go out on a low-note. But then, in 2011, after lying dormant for 11 years, Ghostface rose with a vengeance for a fourth outing. “Scream 4” saw the return of original franchise writer Kevin Williamsom, and his passion shines through in the script. This was Wes Craven’s last film, so all the better that it proved to be a return to form. Sadly, “Scream 4” is leaving Netflix just before Halloween, and it’s taking other holiday-appropriate films with it, like “Casper” and “Gremlins” - both leaving Oct. 1st.

#5: “In the Tall Grass” (2019)

Top 10 Releases Coming to and Leaving Netflix in September 2019

Coming: October 4th, 2019 Though it’s unfortunate to see so many supernatural and horror films leaving the streaming service in the lead-up to Halloween, rest assured that Netflix has still got you covered. “In the Tall Grass” is a novella co-written by American horror legend Stephen King and his son Joe Hill. It tells the story of a brother and sister who enter a field of tall grass after hearing the pleas of a young boy. Once there, however, things take a dark and disorienting turn. Netflix has a solid track record with Stephen King adaptations, and genre enthusiasts will surely be thrilled to see The Conjuring’s Patrick Wilson get top billing. Speaking of Netflix original horror films, be sure to check out “Eli” on October 18th.

#4: “Empire Records” (1995)

Also in:

Top 10 Moments from Empire

Leaving: October 1st, 2019 If you asked cinemagoers about this film in 1995, chances are that most of them wouldn’t know what you were talking about. That’s because “Empire Records” only made about $300,000 at the box office and was panned by critics. In the years since, however, “Empire Records” slowly but surely found its audience and is now considered a cult classic. The teen dramedy follows the lives of several young employees at a local music store under threat of being bought out by a major chain. Infinitely quotable and featuring performances by a young Renee Zellwegger and Liv Tyler, it’s a lot of fun, and the soundtrack is fantastic. Sadly, this little film with a big heart is looking for a new home as of October 1st.

#4: “Living with Yourself” (2019-)

#4: “Living with Yourself” (2019-) Coming: October 18th, 2019 Need further proof that Netflix is fundamentally changing the movie and television industry? How about the fact that they’re producing a series starring not only Paul Rudd, but also… Paul Rudd again! Created by Daily Show producer Timothy Greenberg, “Living with Yourself” tells the story of Miles Elliot, a man who, after undergoing a procedure promising to improve his quality of life, winds up with an identical clone. A pitch black dark comedy, the series seems poised to ask big questions, while also delivering all manner of grim laughs. Paul Rudd is the sort of actor who knows how to carry scene; with two of him sharing the spotlight, this is must-watch television.

#3: “Despicable Me 3” (2017) Leaving: October 5th, 2019 With comic book adaptations being all the rage these days, both the big and small screen can often feel crowded with superheroes and supervillains. But it doesn’t matter how many criminal masterminds get the big screen treatment, Gru remains one of a kind! The third “Despicable Me” film finds our now-reformed supervillain at something of a personal and professional crossroads. He went straight with the Anti-Villain League, but when he and his wife are both let go, Gru finds himself at a loss. Add to that a secret twin brother suddenly stepping into the picture, and you’ve got the recipe for one heck of an adventure. “Despicable Me 3” might not be quite as solid as the first film, but we’re still sorry to see it go. #3: “Dolemite Is My Name” (2019) Coming:October 25th, 2019 Ready or not, Eddie Murphy is making a comeback! Like other legendary comedians before him, the “Beverly Hills Cop” star has reportedly inked an extremely lucrative deal with Netflix. This came shortly after Murphy appeared on Jerry Seinfeld’s hit Netflix series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”. Before we’re treated to Murphy’s highly anticipated Netflix stand-up specials, however, we’re getting a primer in the form of this biographical comedy about influential filmmaker Rudy Ray Moore. The reviews are in, and they are glowing. Murphy’s filmography is admittedly uneven, but his passion for this character shines through in the film; it’s easily his best performance in many years, while the movie as a whole is just a lot of fun.

#2: “Cloverfield” (2008)

#2: “Cloverfield” (2008) Leaving: October 1st, 2019 Found footage films are a dime a dozen - no seriously… they’re just about one of the cheapest ways to make a movie. But quality found footage films are hard to come by. After the cultural phenomenon of “The Blair Witch Project”, many tried and failed to emulate its success. Like “Paranormal Activity” one year earlier, 2008’s “Cloverfield” proved that, with the right creative team, the found footage approach has more to offer. And with J.J Abrams producing, Planet of the Apes’ Matt Reeves directing and a script by Drew Goddard, its safe to say this team had vision. A remarkable monster film that also gave birth to a cinematic universe, “Cloverfield” will be sorely missed after October 1st.

#2: “Big Mouth” (2017-) Season 3

#2: “Big Mouth” (2017-) Season 3 Coming: October 4th, 2019 What can we say about this animated Netflix original series that we haven’t already said? We’ve made no secret of our love for “Big Mouth”. Yes, it’s crass and features tons of next level gross out humor the likes of which you can only get away with on a streaming service. But… it’s also got a ton of heart, important messages, genuine insight and takes an honest, non-judgemental look at puberty and adolescence - something which is sorely lacking from the pop culture landscape. The trailer for season 3 opens with a game show about... self pleasure, before teasing themes of toxic masculinity, incest and pansexuality; so yeah… “Big Mouth” clearly isn’t slowing its roll. Plus… Coach Steve is getting the Queer Eye treatment!

#1: “The Imitation Game” (2014)

Top 10 Releases Coming to and Leaving Netflix in May 2019

#1: “The Imitation Game” (2014) Leaving: October 29th, 2019 Most people think that they have a fairly solid grasp on the events of WWII. In reality, however, this years-long conflict involved so many moving parts that countless incredible stories tend to get overlooked. Alan Turing might be an icon in the fields of math and computer science, but a household name he is not. And yet, as this biopic shows, he was actually instrumental to the ally victory during WWII. A bona fide genius, Turing helped build a machine that allowed the British to decipher the encryptions used by Nazi Germany to communicate. As Turing, Benedict Cumberbatch delivers a brilliant performance; the film was rightfully nominated for eight Academy Awards. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ve got until October 29th! Before we unveil our top pick coming to Netflix, here are a few honorable mentions “Peaky Blinders” (2013-) Season 5 Coming: October 4th, 2019 “Impractical Jokers” (2011-) Season 1 Leaving: October 1st, 2019 “Raising Dion” (2019-) Coming: October 4th, 2019 “The Fall” (2013-16) Series 1 Leaving: October 29th, 2019 “The Kominsky Method” (2018-) Season 2 Coming: October 25th, 2019

#1: “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” (2019) Coming: October 11th, 2019

There are numerous television shows that have continued or concluded the narrative with a movie. Deadwood, Firefly’s “Serenity”, “Sex and the City”, “Entourage” - these are just a few popular examples. But we’re not sure if there’s ever been such a high profile release as this continuation of Vince Gilligan’s critically acclaimed series, “Breaking Bad”. When we last saw Jesse Pinkman, he was driving away in Todd’s El Camino. His future was wide open and we didn’t have the slightest inkling as to where he might be headed. The episode as a whole was a phenomenal way to end the series, but Jesse’s story clearly wasn’t finished. With the release of “El Camino” on October 11th, we’re finally getting answers.
