Tis the season to welcome new content and say goodbye to the old. Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for Top 10 Releases Coming to/Leaving Netflix in December 2018. For this list, we’re looking at 5 of the best properties that Netflix will sadly be dropping come December 2018, as well 5 of the best incoming titles for you to get excited about. #5: “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2011) Leaving: December 16th, 2018 Based on the critically acclaimed 1974 John le Carré novel, “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” centers around the search for a Soviet double agent within Britain’s secret service. The film was a modest hit at the box office, overlooked by many due to its slower pace. This is an old school espionage film, more focused on intrigue than the action-oriented secret agents of modern film. What it lacks in chase scenes and gunplay however, it more than makes up for with its complex plot and stellar cast. How often do you get to see the likes of Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, John Hurt, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Ciarán Hinds all in the same film? #5: “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” (2018-) A Midwinter’s Tale Coming: December 14th, 2018 By now you’ve surely already binge watched Netflix’s hot new take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch - perhaps more than once. If you haven’t, you’re missing out on some very watchable content - especially if you’re a fan of Riverdale. As a gift to its subscribers, Netflix is bringing us a special Christmas episode in the form of the aptly titled “A Midwinter’s Tale”. We can’t get enough of Kiernan Shipka’s take on Sabrina, or the world that’s been built around her, and so this is a welcome treat indeed. Netflix isn’t giving too much away, but considering the scares delivered in season 1, don’t expect this holiday special to be of the holly jolly variety. #4: “Groundhog Day” (1993) Leaving: December 1st, 2018 Living the same day over and over again like Bill Murray’s character in this film would indeed be a nightmarish experience. But… if that daily sequence of events included getting to watch “Groundhog Day”, we’re not sure that it would be that bad. Sadly, time continues to boldly march forward, bringing with it the batch of departures from the Netflix library, including this classic comedy. If you are one of the few people out there who has somehow managed to not see this film yet, trust us when we say it’s a must-watch ‘90s offering. After all, a movie doesn’t wind up in the United States National Film Registry without good reason. #4: “Dumplin” (2018) Coming: December 7th, 2018 With this musical comedy “Dumplin”, romcom stalwart Jennifer Aniston tries her hand at the Netflix model; not only playing a leading role, but also serving as a producer. She plays a one-time beauty queen in the movie who is still very much involved in the world of pageantry. When her overweight daughter chooses to compete however, things get very interesting. Danielle Macdonald plays her daughter, Willowdean "Dumplin'" Dickson, and based on the trailer alone, it’s safe to say that people are going to love the performance. The dynamic between these two talented actresses promises a lot of laughs, and maybe even a heartfelt moment or two. This is definitely one for your watchlist. #3: “Spotlight” (2015) Leaving: December 22nd, 2018 This biographical drama took home Oscars for Best Picture and Best Screenplay; and those are just two notable wins in a long list of various nominations and wins. Written and directed by Tom McCarthy, “Spotlight” tells the true story of how the Boston Globe’s team of investigative journalists brought attention to widespread occurrence of child abuse within the Catholic Church in the city. It boasts an all-star cast including Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber and John Slattery, all of whom turn in award-worthy performances. If you haven’t seen the film, it’s well-worth a watch, both as a piece of American history and as a reminder of the importance of journalism. #3: “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” (2013-18) Season 11 Coming: December 25th, 2018 It’s hard to believe that there will never be another new season of “Parts Unknown”, or any other Anthony Bourdain series for that matter. After the shocking and tragic death of the food icon in 2018, rewatching his shows can feel rather bittersweet. But, hard though it may be to click “play”, it would be an absolute shame to not appreciate the wealth of culinary knowledge and unique insight left behind by Bourdain in his award winning CNN series. As of December 25th, 2018, the second to last season of “Parts Unknown” is available to stream on Netflix, taking us to such destinations as Uruguay, Newfoundland, Armenia, Hong Kong and Bhutan, among others. #2: “Moana” (2016) Leaving: December 20th, 2018 In 2016, Disney took us on an animated adventure the likes of which we’d never been on before - through Polynesia and the mythology of its land and people. A heartwarming, inspiring and often thrilling tale, “Moana” follows the titular young character as she ventures out on a quest to save her village by returning a goddess her heart. It earned two Academy award nominations, much praise from critics and was another big win for Disney at the box office. It’s also just seriously rewatchable. Unfortunately, as of December 20th, you’ll have to look elsewhere for you regular dose of Moana. #2: “Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable” (2018) Coming: December 18th, 2018 Let’s get one thing straight: Ellen DeGeneres has absolutely nothing left to prove to anyone. Second only to Oprah, Ellen is perhaps the most successful television personality of all time. She’s written books. She’s hosted the Academy Awards, Grammys and Primetime Emmys. She’s won 30 Emmys, set records at the People’s Choice Awards and she’s got a freaking Presidential Medal of Freedom. So… why would Ellen DeGeneres return to stand-up after over 15 years when she has so little to gain, and plenty of face to lose? Because… she’s Ellen, and she’s awesome. Given that she’s consistently funny on her daily talk show, there’s plenty of reason to believe she’s still got it. #1: “Sons of Anarchy” (2008-14) Leaving: December 1st, 2018 Saying goodbye is never easy, though if you’re a fan of this series, chances are that you’ve gotten really good at it - what with all the character deaths that occur throughout the show’s seven seasons. That being said, Sons of Anarchy (about as badass of a television drama as there ever was) is a very rewatchable show, and it’ll be sad to see it go. As of December 1st, 2018 it will no longer be conveniently available to stream on Netflix. If you’ve never watched the series before, consider this your final warning to put your binging helmet on and take if for a spin. If you’re a diehard fan, why not go for one more ride? #1: “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) Coming: December 25th What a time to be alive and a fan of comic books, superheroes and blockbuster films. Avengers: Infinity War” was a crossover event film without precedent, 10 years in the making, and it blew cinemagoers away when it hit theaters in April of 2018. As of December 25th, 2018, you can rewatch it to your heart’s content, and all it takes is a Netflix subscription. We’re not sure what to say about this film that hasn’t been said already, especially since most of you surely saw it in theaters (maybe even more than once), so we’ll keep it short and sweet: Thanks Netflix, we know how we’re spending Christmas afternoon!
