For this list, we’re looking at all the moments in movies where a character serves up a cold, hard glass of justice. Since several major characters get the axe here, a spoiler alert is probably called for.

#10: Maximus Kills Commodus “Gladiator” (2000)

In the Colosseum, you’d be wise to remember the one golden rule: there are no rules. Having suffered through the death of his family and unlawful enslavement, Maximus finally gets the opportunity to confront the man responsible for his misery in the arena. To help even the odds, Commodus preemptively stabs Maximus in the lungs, forcing him to fight to within an inch of his life. With both warriors disarmed, Commodus lunges at Maximus with a hidden dagger, but is thwarted by his opponent with a slow prod into his jugular. At least now Maximus was able to use his last breath to get the revenge he sought for so long.

Michael Sullivan, a hitman for big time gangster John Rooney, sees his two lives collide when his son witnesses one of his kills. Connor, his boss’ emotionally unstable son, decides to take matters into his own hands by killing Michael’s wife as well as one of his sons. Michael sets to avenge the murders of his loved ones by hunting down Connor in his hotel. Between the tracking shot and the music, tensions reach an all-time high as Michael pulls the trigger in the bathroom. We also don’t realize that it’s Connor who’s been shot in the bathtub until the slowly door closes and we see his body reflected in the mirror, making the kill that much more satisfying.

#8: Mrs. Lovett’s Last Dance “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (2007)

In a convoluted scheme to make Sweeney Todd favor her, Mrs. Lovett convinces him that his wife, Lucy, had killed herself. The truth soon stares Sweeney in the eyes after he cuts the throat of the wife he hadn’t recognized until it was too late. Stricken with grief at the realization that this was all an act of pure jealousy, he fakes his forgiveness to Mrs. Lovett in return for an opportunity to cast her into a furnace.

#7: Puffer Fish Paralysis “Law Abiding Citizen” (2009)

When enacting a plot to murder a man’s whole family, you’d better make sure he’s not twice as deranged as you. Fed up with the unreliable justice system, Clyde Shelton decides to deliver his own judgment on an operating table. After paralyzing his victim with puffer fish venom, Clyde proceeds to methodically dismember him, but not without cutting off his eyelids and bringing him face to face with a mirror. The true terror is recognized when it becomes apparent that Clyde derives pure pleasure in the man’s torture, acting outside of his cause.

Ex-outlaw William Munny inadvertently drags his straight arrow friend Ned into his debacle after he inducts himself back in to a life of crime. Upon receiving the news of Ned’s murder at the hands of Sheriff Little Bill, Munny arrives at a saloon with no invitation in order to take hisrevenge. After ending the life of the bar owner, Munny takes his shot at Little Bill before lighting up the whole bar with shotgun shells.

When it comes to a good revenge plot, it’s all about the timing. Eternally traumatized by the murder of his father, Irish immigrant Amsterdam preys and waits for his day to take vengeance on gang leader Bill the Butcher. Versing himself in the arts of combat and persuasion, Amsterdam earns a position as Bill’s right hand man. However, his assassination attempt is foiled when his identity becomes exposed. Ultimately though, the two have their moment of reckoning in a brutal knife fight, where Amsterdam takes his long-awaited victory stab.

With the help of Professor Xavier, Erik Lensherr is finally able to subdue the mutant supremacy leader, Sebastian Shaw. With the villain’s body immobilized, victory belonged to the X-Men. However, Erik has a victory he’d been waiting to claim ever since he was a child. Disregarding the pleas of mercy from Xavier, Erik uses his magnetic powers to slowly force a coin through Sebastian’s skull, re-enacting the hellish test he was put through as a boy.

Talented swordsman Inigo Montoya dreamed of the day he’d be granted the opportunity to face off against his father’s killer, the six-fingered Count Rugen (roo-gen hard g). When the final battle commences, Inigo can’t help to recite the rehearsed line repeatedly, reminding himself as to why he must win. After turning the tides of the fight in a miraculous comeback, Inigo finishes Count Rugen with a lunge to the body.

Have you ever been involved in a scenario where revenge isn’t so sweet? When serial killer John Doe is in custody, he baits the two detectives on his case into taking him to a secret location. Once they get there, a box is delivered. Unfortunately, it contains the severed head of Det. David Mills’ wife. While the serial killer goes into grotesque detail about how he committed the evil deed, the detective wrestles with one of the hardest decisions of his life. Take vengeance for the death of his pregnant wife and play into John Doe’s psychotic scheme, or show restraint and see him go to jail. Overcome with anguish, Mills shoots the killer in the head, completing his seven deadly sins and likely ruining what’s left of his own life.
